I had the opportunity to speak with Pete and Dave and tour Infrasonic East after they hosted a post-NAMM party at their studio the night before. I rather selfishly “DJ-ed” some of my favorite records through their system for part of the night and realized just how beautiful their room sounds!
Infrasonic Sound is a mastering studio owned by Pete Lyman and operated by himself and fellow engineer Dave Gardner. The studio first opened its doors in Los Angeles 14 years ago and has recently expanded to a second location in Nashville, where we met with them.
Infrasonic specializes in audio and vinyl mastering. Over the years, Pete has worked with a variety of artists, including Jason Isbell, Weezer, Panic! at the Disco, and Chris Stapleton. The latter’s 2016 release, Traveller, won a Grammy for Best Country Album. Pete also mixed and mastered Jason Isbell’s 2015 record, Something More Than Free, which went on to win a Grammy for Best Americana Album.

Hi Friends, I had the opportunity to speak with Pete and Dave and tour Infrasonic East after they hosted a post-NAMM party at their studio the night before. I rather selfishly “DJ-ed” some of my favorite records through their system for part of the night and realized just how beautiful their room sounds! I hop you have a marvellous time watching the video!

I know Sony started back producing vinyl last year after 28 years off but I didn't know smaller studios were too. I do miss the experience of going to a store flipping through albums, smelling the vinyl, looking at album art and taking the record home and inviting friends over to listen. Something you don't get with streaming or mp3 content.

I really love this video! I'm not gonna have anything cut to vinyl, but it's really fascinating. I quickly went to CD back in the old days. I listened to my few vinyls so many times, I literally destroyed them.

No really! I had to rebuy two or three albums, simply because on the original ones there were so many scratches that the needle started to jump all over the place. And then I bought my first CDs. And I was amazed I could actually here the piano player accidentally hitting the piano. I never bought another vinyl album again. But you are right: Taking out the record, putting it on the turntable, cleaning the record and putting the needle, where I wanted it, was special. By the way, I still have both, the vinyl and the CD of that song, in which the piano player accidentally hit the piano.

I'm so happy vinyl is making a bit of a comeback, or at least that the rumours of its demise were exaggerated. I still have loads of records, including a few rarities. Everything from Beethoven, Bruch and Bach to Underworld's "Rhythm & Stealth" box set. The Muddy Waters "Folk Singer" album on heavy-weight vinyl sounds absolutely amazing.

I'd love to know how that was engineered, my Dad used to have a huge Conrad Johnston valve amp driving some old Sonus Fabers and you'd swear the guy was in the room with you when I played that record through it. Magic!

Gerry James Edwards I agree! That would be amazing to know!!

I've just been reading up on it, and apparently it was produced by Willie Dixon, who also played bass, along with Ralph Bass and was engineered by Ron Malo. I had no idea Buddy Guy played on that album until now! I also had no clue that Dixon was a producer. Eqpt. wise, according to a dude on Gearslutz, was a UA tube console. Ampex 350/1 tapemachines, Echochamber (a tube connecting the studio to the basement where an amp and speakers were, and where Check Berry got to hide out when he was in trouble. Allegedly). Mics are likely to have been EV 666 & EV 635A... possibly. Crazy that I haven't looked this up until now, but glad I finally did!

Thanks Warren, Pete, and Dave. I like my records. I have a variety of types of vinyl, some heavier duty than others. There were a few toward the end of availability that had the problem of bouncing the stylus out due to what you guys were talking about. Some of the thinner ones were warped before they ever shipped. I can remember that . Love the sound of the well made vinyl over any cassette or 8 track I ever had.
