Thank you so much for watching, commenting, and subscribing! :)
This video shows how I personally make my herb and spice oil infusions. Be sure to research the herbs and spices for yourself and your particular recipe, making sure they are both safe to use in cold process soap and safe for the skin.
In case you’re interested, I have an affiliate store where I’ve listed all of the soap making supplies and materials that I purchase on Amazon: www.amazon.com/...
If you use those links to buy anything, it won’t cost you anything extra, but I will receive a very small percentage of the sale. Every little bit helps, though, so thank you very much if you do! :)
Several links below provide information on many other herbs and spices, along with details on how to make infusions with them and what happens when you add them to cold process soap.
In this video, I used olive oil, but I occasionally use sunflower and sweet almond oil for various infusions. Here are some details about each herb/spice I used in this video:
Indigo Root Powder Infusion ratio: 2 teaspoons for every 4 oz olive oil (I purchase my indigo powder from both BrambleBerry and Soap Making Resource)
Paprika Powder: 2 Tbsp for every 4 oz olive oil
Nettle Leaf Powder: 2 Tbsp for every 4 oz olive oil
Dried Calendula Petals: Fill the jar with the dried petals, cover completely with olive oil
There are basically two methods for infusing oils: applying heat to quickly infuse the oils OR allowing the mixture to sit for about 6 to 8 weeks. I make my infusions using a double boiler, but I have also achieved great results using a crock pot. I’ve never tried allowing the mixture to sit for weeks. I’m really just too impatient for that. There are links below that discuss both methods.
I’m sure I’ve left some great sites out of this list below, so if you know of one, please let us know in the comments. For more information on various ways to infuse oils, ratios, and some great tips, check out these links:

If you have a specific question or need a link, just leave a comment below, and I'll get back to you asap. :)

I just put my oils mixed with the herbs in the yogurt maker: paprika, ginger, turmeric fine powder that I bought and the hibiscus, jasmine and rhubarb in canola oil. Lavender and calendula in castor oil. All the plants that came whole, I ground them medium in the coffee grinder. Looking forward to tomorrow! I only have 8 jars in my yogurt maker, so I had a few plants left to experiment with.

Hi! how do you use the infused oils? how long it can wait until you use it for soap making? and do you use it for coloring the soap only? (maybe some special qualities..?) I want to make natural colorants for soap making, do you know what ingridients can be found around that can fit this purpose? instead of buying ready powders.. thanks a lot!

Hi Holly. As someone who has watched all of your videos, I must say that I find your soaps so beautiful and the things you achive with natural colorants only are amazing and very impressive and inspiring :) Thank you for this video. It's very informative. I have one question regarding the measurements, as the whole ounce thing is so confusing to me (I live in Israel and we use the metric system): when you say 2 teaspoons for every 4 oz olive oil, do you mean ounces by weight or volume?

+Rose Originals Thank you! I saw your beautiful Summer Blossom soap video (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-88CHtjOD5qw.html) where you discuss your infused oils and how you make them. The dried herbs you use look wonderful, by the way! I use most of my infused oils up within 6 to 8 months. But I have had some of my rarely used infusions that lasted a little more than a year (maybe even a bit longer depending on the oil I used). I store all of them in a very cool, dry location, too.
@beautymarkgirlkik
@beautymarkgirlkik 8 лет назад
Would it be appropriate to store the infused oils in the refrigerator?
@hollysoapmaking
@hollysoapmaking 8 лет назад
+beautymarkgirlkik I think that would be great and should extend the shelf life. I keep some of my smaller quantity soaping oils in the fridge...the ones that tend to go rancid quick like Hemp seed oil. Some people even keep their cooking olive oil in the fridge to help it last longer. :)

@hollysoapmaking
@hollysoapmaking 4 года назад
Thanks! If I'm coloring an entire batch, I'll replace a percentage of the recipe with the infused oils. How much I use just depends on the specific infusion (some are more intense than others). If I'm coloring a small amount of soap, I'll add up to 2 teaspoons of the infused oil per cup of soap. Jo Haslauer has an article on Modern Soapmaking's website that explains how she uses plant infusions in soapmaking with some specific numbers that might be helpful, too - bit.ly/3ka9Ttb

Infusions will usually be smoother and clearer in the finished soap, while the straight powder can look a bit speckled and might even feel scratchy (depending on how much you use). I actually do both. It really just depends on what you like and how you want a particular soap to look. :)

Thank you! When I used a crockpot in the past to infuse oils, I fill it with warm/hot tap water and then set it on low. It's been a long time since I've used one, but it seems like I checked the oils at 2 hours and ended up leaving them for another 4 hours (checking them every hour). My crockpot tends to get really hot (even on low), so it didn't take as long as I expected. Thanks for watching and for asking! --Holly

It really depends on the herb or plant material you’re using. I tend to use a lot less indigo, however, if using calendula, I’ll usually replace all of the olive oil in my recipe with calendula infused olive oil. Some can be irritating to the skin, so I’ll use less of those (like paprika). Here’s a great article from Modern Soapmaking with lots of details about using infused oils - bit.ly/2IK5SfH. I actually do leave the dried calendula in the jar until I’m ready to use the oil and have never had any problems. Thanks for asking! :)

My wife and I, sort of because she's the head soap maker and I'm just the packaging department, have a disagreement. I say to use olive oil to infuse because it is slightly thicker and she wants to use grapeseed oil because it is thinner. Do you use olive oil as a preference or is there a specific reason? I hope you find time to answer?
@hollysoapmaking
@hollysoapmaking 7 лет назад
Well, I don't want to appear to choose sides. LOL But I use olive and sunflower oils for all of my infusions mostly because it's what I had on hand when I first started infusing oils. They do seem to work well with the herbs and spices (don't interfere with the colors...especially the sunflower oil since it's so very light in color). Olive oil is my preference when I'm actually substituting an infused oil for part of my recipe simply because it's a large percentage of all of my recipes and allows me to substitute larger amounts of infused oil when needed. I've never used grapeseed oil for infusions, but I'm thinking it would work fine. I'm not familiar with the shelf life of grapeseed oil, but you could always add rosemary oleoresin or another antioxidant to the infused oil to help extend it. Thanks for asking! My husband is the head of my packaging department, too, and we often have discussions on topics like this. :) --Holly

Can I use fresh herbs? Like rosemary, peppermint or mint, or rose?
@hollysoapmaking
@hollysoapmaking 5 лет назад
Provided you make and use it the same day to make soap, it should be fine. Anything with moisture will start to grow mold quite quickly. I would never make a fresh infusion and then try to store it. Even if you remove the plant material, moisture has been introduced to the oil which will grow mold and bacteria. Hope this helps!

I used Spirulina to make green, but by the time my soaps had cured, the green had faded to nothing. Did I do something wrong, or is it just not a good colorant?
@hollysoapmaking
@hollysoapmaking 8 лет назад
Spirulina does that to me, as well. I used it in my Winter Wonderland soap and the green just faded completely. I've since tried several other natural green colorants, but none of them are as dark green. Nettle leaf infused oil mixed with oat straw powder and a little indigo root infused oil to darken it produced a darker pea green. Also, green indigo root is supposed to produce a nice green, but I haven't tried it yet. Thanks for asking, Heather!

Do you soaps hold the scents of the infused oils well?
@hollysoapmaking
@hollysoapmaking 5 лет назад
The ones I’ve made and used have not. However, I can see how some stronger herbs like maybe dried rosemary might a little. I do think if you make an unscented soap using infused oils you may notice a different scent to the soap for sure. I’ve noticed that happen with calendula. When I replace all of the olive oil in my recipe with calendula infused olive oil, it has a distinct scent (not flowery at all...but almost nutty). That does fade quite quickly though. was looking for information and I lived your video. I have a question should we use these infused oil as super fat or they can be used as normal oils as per the recipe and then add lye.. will adding lye kill the herbs properties.

+Manisha Chalwadi You can add them as regular oils in your recipe. Or if you only want a little, you can add maybe a teaspoon or so per cup of soap. I don’t think all the properties are lost during saponification. Thanks for asking!

Could you show a beet root infused oil? I did one recently and I'm not sure what to think about it.

Hi Holly ! Thanks a lot for this amazing video: I always learn a lot by watching each and every one of yours ! My question concerns the black walnut hull powder: I know we can use it as it is - add powder to c.p. soap BUT can we make a b.w.h.p. infused oil too such as paprika, indigo, alkanet, etc. ? Kindest regards from Quebec !

No, I leave the larger pot open. I don’t put the lid on my crock pot either (if I use it instead).

Hi can you tell me how much of the oils you use in order to color lets say a 5 pound batch? do you use the whole infused oil replacing it with the olive oil of the recipe or a specific cuantity?
@hollysoapmaking
@hollysoapmaking 8 лет назад
+Elinor Ben Hamo Thank you for watching! When I do color an entire batch, I subtract oils from the recipe and use a percentage replacement. Several of the links in the description box discuss how much they used to achieve a certain color. It really depends on the color you want to achieve, the strength of your infusion, and the herb infusion that you're using - testing all of those together with your particular recipe. I find that the percentages needed to achieve a specific color can vary greatly between the different herbs. :)

Question: I learned about these powders - Alma, neem, orange peel, Fenugreek, curry, jatamansi, Brahmi, bhringrak. I want to cold infuse 1 tbs of each powder (8 tbs total) into a healthy oil blend for a period of 8 weeks (shaking it daily) but how much oil should I use with 8 tbs of powder to create a great infusion?

Any infuse oils can be use in lotions, soap, creams, or salve because they are great for the skin, for aches, arthritis, hair, or even skin problems like acne.
