At this point Eminem literally can’t win. People want shady back, then they don’t like it. People want more mature em, then they don’t like it. Plus why does it bother people that his main fans like this? He has super dedicated fans. If you don’t like it move on and listen to what you like instead. Simple as that.

There are a few reasons this song is okay but kinda awkward and weird. 1. The fun and goofy songs from Eminem's earlier projects (Without me, real slim shady, my name is) all were great examples of Eminem's crazy and wacky delivery and there was just a lot of charisma/character to the way he was rapping. New Eminem is alot more focused on the technical aspect of rapping and rhyming 2. Eminem's hooks used to actually be really good, catchy, and creative. Some of them were simple but they also showcased Eminem's songwriting abilities. Say goodbye Hollywood, Soldier, The way I am, Rock Bottom, Superman, Business, and the ones mentioned previously: all of these songs had great and memorable hooks that were performed by Eminem himself. Houdini's hook is just terrible, the rapping is good but it's not as memorable or special in execution. It kinda just comes off as a poor attempt at recapturing what made "without me" so special
@DukeBluedevil70

You nailed it. Way too self-referential, even for a guy like Eminem. The song relies far too much on meta elements and doesn't stand up on its own as a good song.

@@giovannidejoie8618 I don't agree. I'm all for some nostalgia! If he wants to make an album full of Slim Shady songs that sounds as if they could've been an album he made in the early 2000's, I'm all for it. I'm all for trying new things, but I don't mind throwback music either, Early 2000's hip hop was, in my opinion, peak level production value. (Not peak level content or lyricism. That belongs to the 90's. And the rappers sounded the coolest in the 80's. But as far production value? The melodic beats from the 2000's were insane! I want more melodic hip hop, but with better lyricism than in the 2000's.)

The song isn't for hip-hop heads, it's for his core audience who''ve been asking for years for the return of slim shady. Personally I wouldn't call the song wack. If that song is wack then we need to invent a new word for J Cole's Grippy and whatever that Sexyy Red and Drake song is called. That said it did take a few listens for it to grow more on me and I still think it's mid. However, I really enjoyed the video since it sent me all the way back to coming home from elementary school and watching Without Me nonstop on MTV. I also don't think he needs to rap for hip-hop critics anymore since clearly most of them are always going to hate on him for some reason. At this point he should just give his loyal following the music that they love and enjoy from him, and judging by the numbers that video is doing I think he's succeeding at that 🤷‍♂

The thing about Houdini after relistening to it is that it’s really not that offensive, at least compared to his old stuff. It’s just painfully mediocre. It’s not as bad as some of his other post-Eminem Show material, but it’s still not good. The beat sounds like a dollar store version of his singles back in the early 2000s and Eminem sounded like he was just throwing in “offensive” words to entertain the edge lords online, but didn’t actually construct them in a way that was all that clever or funny. The punchlines ranged from okay to flat out terrible, especially in the third verse, which was mostly filler. I honestly think he can do better, but he knows that the stans will eat up anything he shits out, so he doesn’t have to try anymore.

Or like calling everyone liking kendrick not like us "stans" automatically. Are we basing most people on "most in our circle" or "most statistically"? I just had to say this because i especially see this in the comments and everywhere that someone who doesnt like it is. "Oh they're just stans" as if that opinion makes your opinion any more valid. Plus...and as a Jay Z fan I can say this...Jay went an entire decade where he didn't put out a great album. In fact some of them were actually not good during that time. But ppl forget so quickly. I'm not mad it at but why can't Em get the same grace? Yes, Encore was a miss but then he came back with 3 in a row that got good to great reception. Ppl have gotten too comfortable with that narrative that Em hasn't put out anything good since the Eminem Show and it's arguably false.

What’s weird is his life story is fairly interesting, so it’s not like he has a lack of experiences to pull from. If he did like a memoir style album over some quality (not corny) beats and wasn’t so concerned with pop appeal I would probably eat it up. Something in the vein of “Rock Bottom.” I love the picture he paints in that song.

For a guy who always screamed at the top of his lungs how much he didn't give a fuck he cares A LOT what people think of him. He is always trying to win everyone over. His day 1s, his new fans, his youngest fans, black, white...And it'd be better if he just focused on one. Which would be to cater to his HIP HOP fans. Which aren't the Stans. Because Eminem himself loves hip hop hop. If he just made a whole album of only rapping without trying to make a hit song then it'd bring out his best traits.

I have the same view as the white hip hop professor Skye is it? Basically if it's ironically bad, it could be genius. If Eminem is that creative. If this was a genuine attempt it's just sad. It can't be though. There's no way. Genius!!: as in: the rest of the album fleshes out the concept of Shady being a cringe remnant of his past and in modern times would sound like a conservative radio host. Thats why hes killing him off, maybe. Because that extreme early 2000's character isn't "hip" anymore. It could be good if it explored that idea. Again if not, like there's no crazy twist, then yeah. Edit: im still watching your video you might have the same theory that'd be cool
@JulianWyllie

I think this is one of those situations where the fan theories will be more interesting than the album itself. That conservative radio host idea could be cool, but I doubt he's going for that. Guess we'll see.

I saw Skye's video on it as well, and I'm in the same camp with you. If this song and video are just a bait and switch tactic, and the album is a huge twist it could be awesome for Em. As a huge Eminem fan I don't want a whole album in the style of Houdini from him at this point in his career. I thought MTBMB was an awesome late career album for him, but most people didn't even listen or give it a chance. I would love to see him continue on that kind of level or approach. The album title really gives me hope there is a bigger plot and plan in play. He's said himself in interviews in the past he likes to release the cheesy single ahead of the album release and have all the darker and more serious stuff in the rest of the album because that strategy works best for him. Fingers crossed that's all this is.

Lol saying it's time for Em to try something else... what like he hasn't? He's one of the most verstile rappers ever in terms of... look how many styles and sounds he's created. Nas is great but sounds the fkn same since 1994. Same tone, same style, same writing style, everything... Now look at Eminem... My Name Is vs... NOT AFRAID? Are you serious. May as well be a different human being. N so when you say he should try something different... well, there's an example - Reocvery wasn't? Even The Eminem Show back in the day, coming off of MMLP... that wasn't mature? People's memories are like godlfish.

I love Nas, but all 6 of those albums sound the same, and they are praising it, but I know good and well they don’t return to those last 6 albums like that because a few of them said it when they did the Nas bracket… Eminem gives a different sound and style to every single album and a new way to rhyme. They don’t like mature Eminem. They don’t like “lose yourself” they don’t ever mention his songs like “toy soldiers, when I’m gone, mockingbird” they don’t like “recovery” they shitted on “revival”, so they don’t want a mature Eminem. They like SSLP and MMLP, but when he gives a song that like that “he’s too old for this”. They’ve boxed Eminem in and nothing he raps about will interest them no matter what.

Eminem’s flow on this song is stiff af sometimes and his rapping ability is way below the belt here, no witty wordplay or actual funny bars, you listen to his flows from like 98 to 2004 and dude used to be so much smoother on the mic. Wayne and somewhat Ye get a lot of passing in the Hip-Hop community than Eminem if you want to be serious. Wayne can release an album like Funeral and Rebirth, and although he receives some criticism (not as much as Eminem), he is still respected, as he should be. On the other hand, if someone doesn't like Eminem's new music, he not only faces harsh criticism but also disrespect towards his legacy. Keep in mind, that Eminem's last album, in my opinion, was better than Wayne and YE's most recent efforts.

I don't love or hate the song. I listen to more than just hip hop so I knew the sample right away and it's mad weird to rap over Steve Miller Band (even though I like Steve Miller Band). I don't think there's any rapper who could rap over that sample and I'd like it. But with that said when I was a kid the jokey Em was my favorite of course. Without Me, Real Slim, Just Lose It...and this is that same feel. But I don't ever return to those old jokey songs so a new jokey song that is trying to be like an old jokey song isn't landing for me now as an adult. Ironically Eminem is in his 50s but he'll never mature. I've gotten to the point where I just like listening to Em to hear what wordplay and punchlines he comes up with and how many syllables he rhymes. I'm a word nerd so that's where I get enjoyment still. I don't often like the songs themselves anymore but I often like the verses from a written perspective.
