With the amount of pretty serious injuries that have come from falls onto the bare concrete alongside the rythm lanes you would think they could cover them with some sort of high density foam sheets, or even catchment nets. That was a brutal crash.

Thanks for the Update Donny. Bummed for Forkner, that was a wicked get off and his injuries could have been a lot worse, I know a broken back is not good but at least he is avoiding surgery which could keep him out a lot longer. Bummer if it was a contact lens. Kid is tough and has gone through a lot in his career. This one may be tough to come back from. Hope he isn’t done, but I wouldn’t blame him if he decides to hang it up. I know he is a tough kid and we will more than likely see him back on the bike, maybe not in SX, but possibly for outdoors. I like Pings idea of putting in 6” of mulch on the bare concrete to soften the blow if you do get flung off the track like Austin did. Could have prevented broken bones to maybe just a bone bruise or no injury at all. But that was one of the most wicked crashes I’ve seen since him and Jett coming together. Heal up soon Austin.

Sounds like Forkner got pretty lucky with how hard he hit the concrete. You can see he stayed limp in the air which likely helped a lot! The big question is why was there so much exposed concrete that close to the track? I thought they had to have a buffer of dirt or plywood.

contacts offer a much wider field of vision. they're also more economical (I went through 5-6 pairs of goggles on a race day, usually running 2 classes). you really don't want to recondition your goggles in the middle of a race day. to each his own. but I see pros and cons for both. personally, having contacts come out during a ride was never an issue unless something bad already happened (like I banged my head on the bars or something similarly violent).

Yeah it would be near impossible to race supercross at that speed if one had fell out midway through the race. So for 3 laps let's say he rode with only 1 in and yet, he never dropped off his pace. I find that very hard to believe if i'm honest. If anything I'd say that contact come out when he hit that concrete and it's a slight excuse. Could be wrong. He got pressured and forced into a big mistake trying to go faster on a rough track and pull back away from Deegan.
@senkosirius9730
@senkosirius9730 5 месяцев назад
@@Carpfishing4400 well he was dropping off the pace for a couple laps before the crash and Deegs was catching up. Obviously he proved he was consistently faster than Deegs in the heat race so I don't think it was a pressure thing, I think the contact folding actually happened and Austin is so damn talented he was able to hang on for a few laps until a costly mistake. I wish he would've just slowed down, taken the L and explained what happened with the contact. So bummed for him and that we don't get to see more Forkner Deegan battles.
@Carpfishing4400
@Carpfishing4400 5 месяцев назад
@@senkosirius9730 in actual fact. Of the 16 laps that Forkner completed. Him and Deegan was actually split 8 each for who had done the faster lap time in the main event. But from lap 9 til lap 14 Deegans lap was faster. 15 and 16 Forkner had the faster lap times so yes he was clearly trying to push and get away. We all know what happened on lap 17. So laptimes fully show the contact had nothing to do with it! It was him trying to drop his lap times on a rough track that wouldn't allow it.
@senkosirius9730
@senkosirius9730 5 месяцев назад
@@Carpfishing4400 buddy do you even wear contacts? If you don't, frankly shut the fk up because you're talking to someone who did for over half his life and then got PRK surgery and got 20/15 vision...so Ive experienced racing in both situations. You have no clue the level of talent/muscle memory Forkner has on the bike and when you're used to something being in your eye all the time, you can push through if it gets dirty or folds up but only for so long because it eventually becomes a mental thing where thats all you can think about and then boom, you make a mistake that you likely wouldn't have made. You think the crash made it fall out? Lol....that is not how contacts work. Hitting the ground would not cause that...the contact drying out or getting dirty, then blinking would cause it to fold and once it folds it eventually falls out. I get youre a Deegan meat rider but don't speak on things you know nothing about. Deegs first win was gifted. FACT. And I'm a fan of both guys tbh but Deegan fanboys are really getting fking annoying...

As with other forms of racing this is a teachable moment. They need professional medics who know to use a backboard and collar to move him. They need to red flag the event because of the way he crashed. They now know that a rider can impact the concrete and almost fly into the crowd. All this needs to be addressed or the next wreck like this could lead to a fatality or paralysis due to rookie medics . Motorsports learned from their mistakes and this is a motorsport that needs to lesrn. I watched it live and having had a friend get paralyzed at a supercross event at the Cow palace i thought he got a broken neck at impact

I feel awful for Forkner, I fractured my spine racing Arena Cross and had nasty spinal fusion. He's so fast, but when he goes down the kid ends up rag dolling and gets flattened almost every time. Him and Jeremy Martin need to seriously contemplate the immense damage they've already done and what their future bodies will feel like. Also racing with hardware in your spine is super sketchy and it affects you mentally.

Hated to see this for this awesome dude. Even worse seeing it live 3 or 2 minutes to go . I wanted to cry for this man but he is one tough SOB and sure he will be back to many of these have happened just unfortunate racing events, happens when your pushing the insane limits these guys set

In the 80s and 90s we wore Hella safety gear. It seems like the gear they wear these days looks cool but is inadequate.

this guy has the most unlucky crashes ever! One slight case and he's flying over the track. Crazy career

I used to have contacts fall out pretty regularly until I switched brands, could totally see that being a factor in forkner's crash

If Forkner decides to come back you may want to revisit that scan to the head. Watching that live I honestly thought the kid would be riding a wheel chair for Nitro Circus events next year. Pulling for a speedy recovery.

During the race you can see his mechanic write "mental" on his pit board seconds before the crash.

Don't know if Forkner has a nickname but it should be IRONMAN! Should play Ironman by Black Sabbath whenever he is announced. One tough dude for sure . Wish him the best.

Great update Donnie. For the life of me: Carbon fiber helmets, Frankenstein boots, Stainless steel hinged knee braces & a thin layer of fabric to protect spine & organs??? Why can QBs wear shoulder pads, kidney & rib protection & throw perfect passes. Goalies flail around in head to toe padding & our sport no longer wears adequate upper torso gear to swing handle bars in a limited radius motion??

are you calling the body armor a thin layer of fabric? or are referring to the jersey? I agree that something similar to what road racers wear would probably be more appropriate. not sure about the feasibility of operating a mx bike with those leathers on though. ("leathers" used loosely to imply all the protective gear)

@@daneg I have a set of MSR shoulder pads with chest & back protector. I know old fart woods riders that do two hr xc races in pads, they do it just fine. One of these days someone's gonna get a footpeg in the spine...ouch.

It's so safety irresponsible to not have some type of rubber matting over that concrete.

So a dozen whoops and dragon backs are to dangerous for SX. But, they can put a straight away, to roller, tabletop stepup into a rhythm section and that's ok. Bring back real whoop sections and dragon backs dammit

the problem has always been track maintenance. the specific obstacles are secondary. Phil Nicoletti hit the nail on the head when he criticized A1 (paraphrase) "i sat on the start gate and watched them touch up this jump and that rut, but they left the kicker on the lip of the wall jump that everyone was tripping on. wtf?" there just needs to be more down time between the mains for track maintenance, and they have to target high danger areas. like flattening out the back of that table or removing the lip. tbf, i think you needed the "lip" to go "on off" in arlington rather than the favored "triple over." (think i phrased that right?)

They are going to need to put rubber pads/mat's down on that concrete or something it seems lately. I said it in a post two weeks ago that seems like Austin if it wasn't for bad luck would not have any luck at all. Really feel bad for him as he was starting to shine after 2 races. Really hate to see this for him.

Lol, yes Eli went into Beast mode. It took him a little while to get wound up but when he started coming, people were just in... his...way...and he was going to pass them.
