I cannot BELIEVE RU-vid demonitized this video. mental illness is a very real thing and the fact that RU-vid did that is so upsetting. I'm sorry you worked so hard only to have this happen. You're art is beautiful and I'm subscribing.

I agree, They seem to have been doing this to a lot of videos about various topics, including mental health. And I don't even really speak about it much! Imagine how people who create videos to help others properly must feel! Altruistic people out there making videos to talk about and help with mental illness deserve to be able to make a living with there videos. Thank you for your kind words though.....

Holly Arandelovic I do suffer from mental illness, and I do have loved ones who suffer from it too. My mother was very deeply depressed, and a number of my close family suffer from a few different problems, some of them that threatened their life. Please don't assume things like this. I chose this topic because it is incredibly personal to me, but also universal. These drawings are expressions of my feelings. They are not trying to represent other people's. I am very clear about that in the video. If others relate to me drawings, that is incredible, but I NEVER said I was trying to represent what I THOUGHT mental illness was. I was very clear about the fact that these are personal pieces, of my own personal journey through mt life and mind. I don't appreciate people assuming things about me without knowing me. I do agree with you fully that mental illness isn't talked about and taken seriously enough, and that a lot of people who suffer in different ways are let down but our society's prejudices and misconceptions, which is why I want to be open with my art and I want to represent how I PERSONALLY feel, in the hopes others will feel like they aren't alone. We need to be more open about the topic and that is what I am trying to do.

I want to take a moment to thank you. Bringing awareness of mental health to YOURSELF and OTHERS in a medium such as ink has to be approached with the respect it deserves. And you nailed it! I work in the mental health field and I'd like to punctuate a theory you discovered already: art therapy works! It is a release for the side of your brain responsible for emotions. Mental health is so vital for EVERYONE! I am continually astounded at a society that adamantly encourages heart, joint, nerve, muscle, and organ health, to the point of media frenzy, yet still sweeps brain health aside as a hush-hush topic. We're just going to ignore the central processing unit responsible for keeping all other parts in check?! Aaaagggghhh! Mental health issues and diseases can be debilitating and deadly. At the very least these illnesses create chaos and havoc for everyday life in the sufferers. Thank you for your beautiful work and honesty. AWARENESS is the KEY!

Pam Brown thank you for your words. My mother works in the mental health field, there are definitely a lot of things that get swept under the rug. I appreciate this comment very much.
@moltenkitty7157
@moltenkitty7157 7 лет назад
Pam Brown I know you mean this really well intentioned but honestly the whole awareness thing annoys the fuck out of me. Society is constantly pushing awareness, 'reach out to someone' and blah blah blah but not actual education. Reaching out to those who are freaking ignorant/have no idea how to help, gets us nowhere at all. People are not taught how to deal with mental illness nor are they taught how to respond and help someone when they come to them and say look, i need you. Likewise, someone being aware of depression but not aware of the fact that it can kill, doesn't help if they think it's 'just negative thinking' 'just being sad' 'they're just lazy/pathetic' etc, especially since not all people with depression experience it in the same manner as far as sadness or with any aspect really. Depression isn't something anyone can just 'get over' or 'positive thinking' their way out for a permanent cure like far too many think (maybe some people have which good for them, but yeah). Awareness but ignorance is a bad combination, resulting in stigma. Education is key. That being said, i completely agree with the rest of your statement.
@pambrown9523
@pambrown9523 7 лет назад
Molten Kitty we are completely, 100%, in agreement. You make an excellent point. My choice of the word 'awareness' , is sort a catch all. I agree with you that being aware of a mental health issue in someone is a fry cry from actually being equipped to help. I am just ASTOUNDED at the way people will rush to get medical help for diabetes, high blood pressure, fibromyalgia, etc.., BUT, if these same people are presented with a situation where it is suggested they may need antidepressants or mood stabilizers or trauma therapy they shut down! They will literally refuse to even listen. They can't fathom an ailment in their brain. I feel our opinions go hand in hand. Be aware of the problem and be willing to be EDUCATED!
@myriamtillson
@myriamtillson 7 лет назад
I think part of the issue is that people don't realise what being aware truly means, especially in contexts like this. To be aware is to have knowledge about, and not knowledge of, to be conscious of the facts and the situation, and not just that something exists. People sometimes think that they are "aware" because they have heard it exists, but really, it's just that they've heard it mentionned. You are completely right that what needs to be spread as awareness is actual knowledge of the issues, and facts that help towards a deeper understanding and a better care structure that spans society as a whole as much as possible. Thank you for having this conversation
@myriamtillson

When I was little, I lost someone very important, and my dad took me to see a psychiatrist. She sat me down, handed me paper and pencils, and told me I could draw whatever I wanted. I had always loved drawing, and I so badly wanted to impress her, so I drew big swooping dragons and intricate scenes, and all I can remember from those sessions is the utter pleasure I felt at creating my own things, in the midst of all the pain in our lives at that time. I can with no doubt say that art is saving me, every day, from the depths I know my mind could fall into if I let it. I know that that pain and depths are always there, lurking, I can feel them in my mind, but so far, the pure joy of creating has made me love my life, even when it's so hard I can't breathe properly. Mental health is so fragile, and so tenuous, and I don't think anyone is truly mentally healthy. I think it's something we need to help each other with, something we can help each other with, better than physical ailments. And so we should. We need more kindness, more understanding, and more acknowledgment that we don't always know what we are talking about. Ignorance isn't bad, but voluntary ignorance, or ignoring our ignorance is what is harmful. Thank you for your comment, and for the discussion below, I am very grateful to have you guys in my little youtube community....

Hey Myriam! Beautiful artwork and video as always. Your words always resonate so well with me. I'm sorry that your video has been demonetised, I'm currently dealing with the same issue, with each of my inktober videos being demonetised as I put them up, so I totally understand how exhausting it is to put in this work and have any kind of income taken away from it. I only hope they'll sort this out quickly, make sure to keep checking your videos and appeal as soon as you see it has been demonetised. Stay strong, keep at it, you're doing great!

Hey Minnie, always such a pleasure to get a comment from you! I've been religiously watching all your inktobers, they are so relaxing and wonderful! I am so sorry it is happening to you too, this is insane, at least I vaguely understand why this is happening to my video, a lot of mental health related videos are being demonetised, but why yours? Do you know? I have appealed, but I doubt it'll do anything...It's exhausting.....Thank you for reaching out about it, it means a lot....

How I relate to each of the drawings: (WARNING: Some of these may be triggering to people with mental disorders) 1. Sometimes you have to put on a mask when you go outside. Be happy and seem fine but deep down your overflowing with fear, depression, anxiety, and you are terrified to close your eyes because who knows what will happen. 2. Sometimes you just tend to shatter. You can't take anything anymore. It's like the world is crashing down. You're falling apart but you're drifting off into depersonalization and you're scared to leave but your scared to stay. 3.Sometimes during panic attacks I scratch my face a lot. Sometimes I hope I can distract myself and get to my skull. I tend to have long nails and so I'm surprised I dont have red streaks on my face when I wake up. 4.Sometimes you just get so so so overwhelmed. People keep taking pieces of you and pulling you in different directions. All you can do is surrender. Curl up and cry and just drift off. It also reminds me of how with depression you may have so many things you were interested in but now they're gone. They're leaving your head and taking pieces of you with them, leaving you as an empty shell.

First I got annoyed because, another mental illness thing, when people clearly can't portray things they haven't experienced, at least illnesses, and then you go and say that you don't portray specific illnesses, more like emotions. I love that!

@MR PEEVES a whole lot of people are discovering they have issues during quarantine and economic ruin and imposed isolation. I think people need to keep talking about it and be aware of it because some are killing themselves. Some are more fragile than others and I see no reason to tear someone down for their art. Medical people don't even truly understand the mind yet.

I'd never heard anyone say that we make art to express emotions that we can't actually express/properly feel but... I kind of get that now and I really agree with it. Sometimes I do end up unintentionally working through something in my life by expressing it in my art and I don't know that's what I'm doing until I feel the relief of its completion.

oh and I could relate to all of the pieces, especially the third one. I see it as an eating disorder, at one point when I was the skinniest I felt the fattest, of course that was far from that, I was confused about my feelings and I was probably suppressing a lot of issues so I took it out on my body, i just constantly wanted to be skinnier. at one point I literally was so bad that I felt like the only good feeling would be to crawl out of my skin or explode like the second drawing. I was constantly wearing a mask and lying to myself

Ik this is a bit random I think instead of mental illness it's more of getting over the illness. In the first for example their pulling off their face to let the bad things go. My interpretation of the pieces is how you feel when you express your emotions to someone. When you bottle everything up day in day out and then you just tell someone; your emotions just come flooding out, the bad memories get flushed and you feel anew. The persona you show outwards cracks and peels away to a new you and it might feel completely bare now. Your brain has been picked apart by whoever you telling your problems to and you're allowing it. Loved the video and drawings ❤️ hope you achieve your goals you set!

*These pieces are so beautiful!* They just look so good. I love the theme going on and the entire motive; no specific mental illnesses but rather the feelings of going through the chaos of them and trying to find yourself. I like this sort of stuff as well... and I wouldn't call it a dark interest. Some people simply find the interest and beauty in things that others cannot understand or tend to avoid.

I'm sure you hear it about a dozen times how your drawings are so relatable, and how "I deal with deptession". Well here's another lol. Your work is amazing. I've loved drawing and I remember my grandma telling me I always draw what I feel, and it ended up blocking my creative flow more than helping me because I started to question what I felt rather than feel it. And I've struggled with it ever since. I've managed to scribble out some good meaningful pieces and now that I'm a mother of a 2 year old and work and school is coming up soon I've lost my drive to put my pencils on paper again and I've missed it so much and the pieces you drew are so dark and beautiful and inspire me to get back to drawing and release all this pent up blah I feel. I hope soon I'll build up the courage to try to draw again. I've tried and failed annoyed with how terrible I've become. I work at a crafts store I'm surrounded by what I love. Hopefully soon I'll get back into it.

I love your drawings! And I like how you didn't specify a particular mental health condition but rather left it to the interpretation of your audience. I think these images can be relatable to any individual at any point in life and I don't consider these dark images but rather a visual way of describing what at times we ourselves cannot verbally describe that we are feeling.

Myriam, your art and your narrative are brilliant. hey Myriam, I'm 22 years old and I've struggled with insecurity about art and creativity for years.. thinking that I'm incapable of doing the art I want to do, and judging myself... and basically all of that stuff that I know a lot of others also struggle with, too. I've put a lot of unnecessary pressure on myself and.... hearing you say "be kind to yourself.." is bringing tears to my eyes. Thank you for your advices !! I've been doing Inktober for the first time this year, and have already missed 2 days and feeling awful about it.... But you're completely right, it's more about improving your art and loving it. Your art is incredibly inspiring, thank you for sharing this !

I've been following his prompts and honestly their very basic (which is good in some ways) so I try to incorporate them into a larger idea or a prop in a story. Like today I came up with a story for a cursed sword. As far as drawing everyday goes (I've been drawing everyday for the past ~100 days) I found that after a while I could sit down and draw with no ideas in my head then as I started to make lines ideas would start to form based on scribbles. Some days are hard to draw especially one day this year when I was filled with the most massive anxiety in a long time if not the most ever. That day I still drew and drawing for me helps me move forward and takes my mind off of stress and onto a larger project or idea. Honestly I love the fact your doing this theme and to me it seems like you're drawing the emotional symptoms of mental illnesses or struggle that goes beyond just one diagnosis. For every one of these four pieces I could think of a time when I felt that way, anyways this was a long comment but I just had to express how fantastic this is.

I really like this series of drawings, it stands out from many drawings because of there is substance and a story within. Many artworks I have seen on YT or in general are really impressive technically but emote nothing. I like the fact that you mention the cathartic process of drawing, because that is one of the great, if not the greatest, gift of drawing or practising an art.

these are beautiful and from someone struggling with multiple mental illnesses i can really relate to more than one of these pieces. i usually don't feel anything much with most art (other than simply thinking the artist incredibly skilled or the piece intriguing or beautiful) but these really seem to represent something that's usually so hard to even put into words

Mental illness is a rough ride. It is a double edge sword. People want awareness, but if they know you have depression, anxiety, ptsd, personality disorders, etc. They often run the other way and you are looked at as inferior. Mental illness is like project management, managing thoughts that are all over the place and also trying to maintain “normal”.

Thank you so much for your kind words Myriam! They really helped haha ❤ This was rough to watch just because it's been hitting home so hard recently, but you did really well with the pieces. I like that you're focusing on emotions over specific mental illness because for me there's so much i can't put into words and it's honestly hard to tell what's what when i have alot of mental illnesses that tend to overlap really brutally. My personal interpretation of these is the first one is like depersonalization and derealization, feeling so empty like your guts are pouring at that like and you're just kind of staring at your own disconnected face, the second one i feel like really perfectly describes anxiety and the more mental side of OCD, and on that note the third one ties well into the OCD for physically. The last piece just honestly feels like all of my illnesses and feelings all together, ripping me apart and controlling me like that. I apologize if that was rough to read ❤ I'm sorry about the demonetization as well, youtube is fucking bullshit lately and is demonetizing everything to do with mental health matters, LGBT+ content, and even little shit things like a person that is practiced is using swords cutting an obviously fake dummy, all the while i constantly fucking get gory horror movie ads before RELAXATION videos. It drives me crazy. People, teenagers and kids need to hear about LGBT+ content especially when they're struggling, people NEED to hear and talk about mental health, and.... yeah. It just sucks so much honestly. The most ironic part about it is i'll get ads some times from advertisers showing a gay couple, yet youtube considers that not ad friendly?? And what about all the times i got ads for mental health things and illnesses etc? It's fucking ridiculous and pisses me off so much. Anyway, i'm really sorry for this huge ass rant, your work is lovely and i'm definitely subscribing and following you on instgram ☺❤

Thank you so so so so much for your comment, it is absolutely amazing and wonderful. Thank you for sharing your interpretations and your story, I feel so grateful to have some many people relate and reflect themselves in my pieces and share their very personal stories with me. It's humbling and such an honour. You know what's odd, I didn't realise until I posted the third picture online that I actually do that picking thing. I always have, I literally pick at my lips and fingers until they bleed. It's really strange how I don't realise how those completely represent me until I read others talking about them. Thank you for reaching out on instagram also. I'm so sad about this demonetisation thing, initially because I am struggling financially and was really hoping to be able to do a bit better this month with inktober, but now mostly because I can't believe they would deem mental health, lgbt+...etc...content not child friendly. The more people hear and are able to talk about these topics, the better a place the world will be! It's by stifling them and penalising them that they will stay alienated and misunderstood....It's so saddening....

You are amazing at drawing and I love how you do hands- hard to do but you do perfectly! Also have a lot of knowledge of mental health issues and have helped many, including my own daughter, my sister in law and others. We belong to NAMI. Please Google it, find one in your area. You can get help and more importantly, people who will listen and not judge. Stigma has to stop. You can live with this illness and get better, it's hard, and takes a lot of time but can be done. Coping daily, as we say, one day at a time. Art is a great help and know many who use it to 'unload' feelings. Keep it up you sound good and working it out without harm to yourself or to others. Bless you fine lady!💗

I feel so connected to that 1st and 4th drawing, so don't mind me sharing my thoughts, please. My greatest fear is being a narcissist. I always spend time on other people, I feel like I shouldn't treat myself until I've earned it. It leads to feeling manipulated, or that you're losing your mind because you think you NEED other people to pull the strings, telling you what to do. But I sit there and deal with it, because "It's not anyone else's fault, I just need to stop being over dramatic. In an effort to please other people, you lose everything. I sometimes don't even know who I am. It wasn't until last month that I realized who really deserved my kindness, and who was using me. I had a revelation. I realized that I didn't have any discernible personality. Over the last month I've made a lot of progress towards finding out who I am. I'm the happiest I've ever been now, and It's so refreshing. To anyone reading this, remember that it's not always you're fault, you don't need to please people who give nothing in return.

I know you told us not to put a label on the mental illnesses in the drawings, but to me, the second drawing is what being dissociated feels like. It's like you aren't in your head and aren't grounded (ei; floating away)

Probably the mot inspiring art i have got to see yet. I love the representation, it truly gets to me in a way. I make art myself and it's always so refreshing to see other creative minds with their works. (and also frustrating, because they are SO GOOD, haha!) Thank you, keep doing what you're doing.

The author of the Eat, Pray, Love book gave a TED talk about how some artists often feel a force entering them while they create, and how often times it's not always clear to them what they are making. She gave 2 examples: a poet who felt a poem roiling through the earth, moving through her. Once when she was out, she felt that force before she could get a pen, so she reached out she grabbed the air to catch it and wrote down the words. The poem was complete, but backwards. The second example was a composer of dark music. He was driving and heard a melody in his mind. He looked up to the sky and said "excuse me, can't you see I'm driving?" The TED talk later went on to say the ancient greeks (an in my readings, most cultures) had this belief god, spirits, angels, etc., spoke to certain people and gave them ideas to create. People had a genius, they weren't a genius. More and more I think this is true. The work is beautiful. Your genius seems very talented. Not my cup of tea though. I really tried liking this work because it's so fascinating.

Wow these are great! I like how you say that they don't represent any one particular illness, but that at the end of the day someone could use your drawings to say "I feel like this" and be able to express to others how they feel when they are not able to put those feelings into words. Prints or digital downloads of these would be helpful to therapists. I think at one time or another we have all had a moment when we have felt like each of these and I look forward to seeing your whole series. As for how folks do one a day and post them, well I am doing inktober and I "cheat" by drawing 3 or 4 at a time and then schedule them to be released one per day. I really only have time to make videos two days a week. I also have much smaller drawings and I do them in real time so I don't edit.

Hey Myriam - I 'd like to thank you for bringing it to the point: I also use "dark" themes to archieve a catharsis for all the feelings I cannot put into words. Art so far has helped me to express myself in far more emotional layers as pure speech could ever provide. Many times my close ones do interpret it as a sign of mental illness or at least mental instability but it really is a pressure ventile for me. Drawing and painting such inside-outs is a rather healthy sign than it is meant to warn or even scare people. Drawing happy things instead just to ease the fear of rejection does and never has made me happy. So thanks again for sharing your thoughts - now I feel much less alone with this mindset.

Thank you for explaining I understand completely because I go through the same thing when I draw but the people around me even though I'm in a good mood after drawing these "dark things" will tell me that I'm depressing which is annoying since I'm only 13 and a lot of my friends are depressed so thank you for making everything so clear 💗💗💗💗💗 your art is amazing 😚💗💗💗💗💗

(I don't like to do trigger warnings on things I say but yeah, you know it, so... Trigger Warning, please don't read if you can be easily triggered and stuff) The third drawing really speaks to me. It makes me remember how eating disorders attack people and how, in my case, it makes me feel really uncomfortable in my own skin. Also, it makes me remember when I was younger and used to dermal self-harm. So yeah. Just that, really.
