Hi I'm Asha Kirkby from Skatefresh and this video is a reply to a question from Rodrigo Vila on Facebook about skating for Fitness.
I pinpoint and demonstrates the 3 main problems affecting (intermediate and advanced) skaters' strides.
I demonstrate what these problems should be replaced by in terms of Push, Glide, Set-Down, Cadence and Edges to maximise fitness, technique, muscle strength, stamina and speed.
The training guidelines coming from this discussion is provided by immediate access to 3 Free Stride Training Drills from SKatefresh's new Online Fitness Skating Video Course.
Are you focussing on fitness, distance and speed skating?
Then don’t miss this series of FREE STRIDE DRILLS (just choose your level).

I don't want to make you feel bad about your skating! Just aware that if some bad habits go unchecked this can explain being slower than others even when you are legging it, or worse a slow onset injury from pronation or other issues identified. Ive seen so many slowly injured skaters who had inside edge pronation issues and then had to stop. It's a shame when the solution is doable with a few hours of focus and creating a new habit that then feels much better all round, oh....and you'll be faster and happy about it. I can recommend my "How to Skate for Fitness" online course is all about that. 33 exercises about stride work split into Ex1-10 Beginners Basic Stride, Ex11-21 Intermediate Fitness Stride (this video) Ex 22-33 Advanced Double Push. You can try 2-3 execises from each of these courses absolutely free and see is you like the structure of learning online. www.InlineSkateCourse.com (all 9 courses listed on the Courses page) Hope they help and are fun to do. Will make your glutes burn I promise!

@@SkatefreshVideos Oh no, I'm very grateful, thank you. I am reasonably fit and strong but find skating long distances very tiring, and this explains why. Basically I'm working twice as hard as I need to. As I have been practicing slides and transitions I have neglected this very fundamental aspect of my skating. I know this is intended for beginners or recreational skaters still... the explanation lacks details. You need to explain the D shape which is the recovery mode, you behind kick is a bit exaggerated here, and there is a lot of upper body movement due to the fact you had your arms locked behind. The arms should go in full swing that will imply working more with the body thus getting that cardio session really punching in. Also, important, once the leg comes from the recovery mode, the skater should push in front (glide) not step on the wheels like walking. This will create momentum and increase speed. The most difficult part will remain the carving, the outside edge and the controlled fall (gravitational force using the weight of the body). Other than this... beautiful video with a beautiful lady :) thanks!
@SkatefreshVideos
@SkatefreshVideos 4 года назад
Sorry I missed this comment months ago. Great explanation of the more advanced strides. This video really is for a lower intermediate level skater who is still perhaps pronating, gliding on an inside edge or setting down in a V shape. Until the glide is properly set up and actually happens, the D shape recovery is too advanced and makes people over balance. I like to focus on glide training a lot so skaters can find their stability over their centre edge first and only later advance that onto the outside edge as you say. Then the carving fun begins.... I think many skaters miss out these foundation aspects and then after years of doing it half right certain problems can develop especially ankle, knee and hip pains and it always comes from one or more of these foundation technique aspects being badly done over time and putting strain on the body. Ive seen it hundreds of time in my 19 yrs full time coaching and its this I want to help "cure" in the world of skating. Most skaters aren't even aware of what makes "good" and "Less good" skating and how to fix it. Hense my channel and online courses which really get to the heart of each issue. You might like to check out the Free Lessons on the Double Push which I teach in 12 exercises. They are available free here, just click on free trial next to Trailer video. inlineskatecourse.com/skate-for-fitness-advanced/

Great if you are going for a leisurely skate and I love the foot placement explaination, and I realise this video is for low level intermediate skaters but the zig zagging loses a lot of forward momentum and speed so you don't really wanna develop that habit. So true. Skating improves my strength alot, especially the legs' muscle. I notice this because I cycle to work everyday on a Giant bicycle, 10km x2=20km everyday. After 2 weeks, cycling to work becomes easier, better breath control, I can strike through the crowd on the street even faster without any hestitation. Thats the best part, because I fell face to the ground too many times during the first 2 weeks skating, I feel more confident than ever. 😁 If I fell again in front of many strangers, never mind, just get back ip and roll.

For me, this is your most effective and beneficial video at my particular stage right now. You demonstrated what was **not** a good stride first and I was a bit confused. But then with the good stride, it started to click. A repeat of the video a few times and it came clear. ... Right now, I'm physical weak and new and can't probably do a good glide on the outside edge safely ... I just don't have enough control yet. But knowing the objective I think will help me a lot. The 50/50 "step, glide, step glide" was also key. Your back foot crosses over and I had assume that that was just for show. But it appears to be essential to have a balanced "glide" phase on the outside edge rather than the center or inside edge. I've not done it but it appears that you are getting some power from the glide phase as well as the step phase. And that leads me to wonder / conclude if it is a much more balanced exercise because not only do you exercise the push out muscles but also the opposite muscles as you control the glide on the outside edge. Just a really good video with a lot of information densely packed and a easy to comprehend format.

Realmente?

Nice video. Opened my eyes to my lack of efficiency. I skate more like a hockey skater on an offensive rush. Lol Beautiful backwards skating; balance, precision, grace and control.

There's nothing more satisfying than working on your stride as the results can really feel noticeable if you being to skate slightly differently with more conscious thought about the process. You will undoubtably have an awesome acceleration technique Im sure. many lack that. Hope this all helps.

I observe that 95% of most skaters (even fast ones) are V-ing in their set down and robbing themselves of clean edges (centres or outsides), a strong glide and that gentle zigzag shape that I'm trying to show here. The problem is that "just skating" badly can be hidden from people and the bad habits creep in and then it can get really tricky to fix and correct. But the dangers of not doing so can be awful foot rubbing and blisters (from long term pronation) or worse still slow onset joint pains (feet, ankles, knees or hips) from longterm pronation. I've seen this develop in skaters pronating and then Ive seen the pains disappear as the pronation is worked on and fixed. I've done this process thousands of times with different students so I absolutely know one causes the other. But everyone seems very happy to skate badly, so this is what I;d like to wake everyone up to with videos like this.

@SkatefreshVideos
@SkatefreshVideos 3 года назад
Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. If you are in your first week it's fine to use a subtle inside edge, because your weight is mostly on the center of your body. For now try to keep the balance, your aim should be the center edge. The outside edge comes a little later, when you're comfortable enough to transfer weight from one side to the other as a pendulum. It's necessary to understand that you don't skate perfect from day 1, because that comes with time and conscious practice, however the stride is supposed to evolve, so an intermediate or advanced skater shouldn't have a beginner's stride because it deprives them of efficiency and fitness benefits. A beginner, on the other hand, does need a beginner's stride.

Thanks, I think not enough is being made about the slow onset injuries that I observe in skaters with poor technique (who skate a lot of kms regularly). It breaks my heart when slowly their foot, ankle, knee, hip or back pain gets worse the more they skate. Ive seen skaters then have surgery to try to rectify the problems. And Ive seen other skaters with similar pains (they often point to the EXACT same spots on their ankle/knee) diligently work on their skate technique and consciously control their edge with their knee bend and muscles and changing their V-ing set down to straight ahead. And then when the centre edge is established the pains start to get less and in many cases then disappear completely. I have seen this many, many, many times in my 19 years of full time teaching. It's one of my main motivations for teaching is sparing people unnecessary pain so they can enjoy this wonderful sport. Info is power!

Hey Karel, off skate training is a huge help for balance and muscle memory, a tip from somewhere else was to skate only on outside edge as a drill. Asha is a great teacher and has one of the top sites but also check Pascal Briand, Viktor Thorup or Coach Sooty for some off skate training, they are speed skaters but the basic skills are the same.
@SkatefreshVideos
@SkatefreshVideos 5 лет назад
Karel Donk Tou have exactly the right idea. You have to fiat master centre edges before going to outside edges. The Toe Roll exercise is very good for training one legged balance. Try it. Front skate straight ahead back skate behind you on just the front wheel. Forces you to find your balance on that front skate. Bend that knee! Good luck.

Thanks. Not much teaching here, more like a commentary about skating (which then explains the clases I teach and the emphasis I place on certain things, like V-ing setdowns....) I think there's too much sloppy skating which in some people leads to slow onset injuries in ankles, feet, knees, hips or back. This is the main reason I want to help people skate better. Having to stop the activity you love because its doing you harm is a really horrible place to be in. But fixing technique sorts it all out (Ive seen it many times) so videos like this are to try and spread this message about why its important to skate technically well.

I'll try to find a way to do this. I don't have a studio in Rio so the audio won't be perfect but I'll try.

i feel pain on the inner part of my soles when skating for more than 5/10minutes but push through or make slight adjustments till i find something suitable. does this mean i turn my skates out? also my strides are quite short. but then again, i am skating on carpet haha, not confident enough to go outside yet. only been skating less than a week

Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. The strides Asha is doing in this video are advanced. As a beginner your strides are short and they should be. Later your stride will evolve! Make sure you are not pronating, your wheels should be perpendicular to the ground, they should never look like this / \

Wow I wish there was one for skateboard on a cruiser board. Like proper technique I got a nasty calf sprain while skating switch. I felt I was getting good riding goofy footed and into my session pushing like normal it just snuck up and bit me in the leg ! Now I can still ride in my regular stance but I am afraid to switch due to fear of improper technique and re-injuring the calf

You may the first (openly out there) skateboarder on this channel hahahaha usually inners and skateboarders are fighting for tarmac (all over the world this seems to be a disturbing theme I notice). We're all on wheels. I say it's us against the peds and cars...... Anyway everything you said about skateboarding is basically double dutch to me. No idea what you mean and I certainly cannot help you, I'm sorry. Unless you decide to put other wheels on your feet (properly) and point your feet forwards instead of that sideways 'thing' you boarders do.

Yes it's wonderful. In Brisbane Australia. Oz is simply the best place to skate in the world, so much space and smooth surfaces......

Does it matter what skates you have? I bought artistic in-line skates (Edea Chorus boot and Roll Line Frame) because I wanted to get more into ice-skating but I also like regular skating as well so I just change my rocker to a regular in-line skate and skate. Would that affect it?

Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. You can skate with those but artistic boots are expensive and delicate, so you need to be extremely careful with them especially when you are outdoors and the surfaces are far from being perfect. I would be mad having scratches on that leather.
