Actually bill. Wrist Guards are built with a "bump" on the hand, in order to allow your hand to slide along the floor after falling. This stops your hand-shoulder-neck from locking out upon impact, and therefore relieves the pressure from these places. So wrist guards can quite literally save your neck from breaking :) well done for doing this video on safety gear.

I started watching you in Australia when I got into rollerblading after a 22 year break :) Now I watch you in Ireland when I look for instructions, advice, reassurance but also when I feel blue. Keep recording the videos.

Just clarification for viewers. The warning in the helmet is a ASTM F1492 certificiation for aggressive skating. Helmet is designed for multiple falls/impacts where as a bike helmet or helmet for Recreational skating is designed for a single hard impact (like on a bike). If you want the best protection, go for a helmet with MIPS protection. : )

Yeh I changed my first helmet as soon I hit the ground with that helmet. Now I only wear triple 8 which is multi hit so I don't have to keep changing just in case. But all skaters should wear helmet as u don't know what obstacle would make u fly and hit somewhere in awkward position. I only wear helmet and knee pads at all times

I can relate to the slamming of the coccyx, I did my first major fall onto it last week and Im still walking like I just got off a horse! On the plus side it inspired me to shell out on some Tortoise Pads shorts and once those arrive I assume I'll be invincible...if I can only get them on under my skinny jeans, lol.

I've just ordered my first set of skates at the ripe age of 35! My wife said I will look silly but I don't care :-), after watching all your videos, i wish I had a large budget but unfortunately limited, i ended up going with some blade runner 82s, which I got for a great deal, ordering protection equipment too thanks to your advice here. I would like to say thank you from north east England for all your informative videos. Thx mate. Life time subscriber for sure.

+Dean Parvin I started at 34 - and it feels like I'm the only one city skating in where I live! I sure got some surprised looks from people, and more so while I was crashing around as a beginner. But after several months I get noticed less, I guess. Some people will even show appreciation, too. The best approach is to be cheerful about it, after all it's tons of fun. It also improves self-confidence.

+Dean Parvin Ripe age? Didn't you get the memo that 30's are the new 20's, you're still young and skating will keep your mind and body young. I'm 32 and still skating, I actually still think candles are made to rub against a ledge. You only live ones, have fun and welcome to the club. Don't give up if it's a bit hard in the beginning, it's so worth it ones you get the hang of it.

@Bill Stoppard Skating BSS I also think a completely under-rated piece of safety gear is a hockey stick. Personally, I learned to skate with a stick in my hand and it makes my balance feel that much more natural... But there's another aspect to it as well. When cars see an inline skater with a hockey stick, they give you plenty more space than they would without it. And I think that's the greatest benefit of all.
@TwistyTrav
@TwistyTrav 4 года назад
@Bill Stoppard Skating BSS I'm glad the first thing you showed is the hockey shin pad. That is my #1 go-to padding for city skating... mainly because I got sick of dealing with road rash on the sides of my calves every time I fall. For some reason, I have absurdly massive lower legs for my size, so the tiny knee pads normally used for inline skating barely protect anything.

you should always wear the same protective gear. it doesnt matter if you are 40 kmh fast and break all your bones or somebody else crashes into you with the same speed. my former teacher lost his mind for two week because a pedestrian appeared out of a sudden. you never know what happens.

I like to use padded, fingerless bicycle gloves for my outdoor sessions. They're comfortable and breathable in the hotter weather, and they protect your palm and knuckles in a fall. No wrist support, but I'm not a beginner.

Glad to find this! For some reason I hadn't until now and I was very interested in your take on inline protection. BTW, I have tried to contact PSP via email and phone message and they are not very responsive! In fact, I mention you as a reason for contacting them. I understand your messages including PSP and feel anyone who is complaining about your message and relationship is either very ignorant and/or immature. Nothing about your message is inappropriate or over the top. Great presentation and info as always!

Just got some sebas from PSP. They are awesome and really helped my slowbie ass out! I'm really glad to see a pad info video because I'm back to skating after an absence and it's not easy to be sure just what to expect out there. Sure would like to hear something about ennui's city brace. Seems good for me as I deal with a whole lot of downhill.
@BillStoppard
@BillStoppard 8 лет назад
+Nicolas Silvia I never tire of hearing how happy people are with PSP, as for SEBA; do they make a bad skate!? Enjoy the new jets. Re gloves; I'm far from an expert downhiller; but I've heard the 'Ennui Slider' gloves and the 'blvd glove' (the ones I have) are specific to downhill long boarding and inlining. 'City Brace' looks pretty badass though; thanks for putting it on my radar.

Thanks for outlining wrists guards with their proper intended use. Many instructors and many skaters recommend wrist guards as if it is a permanent solution to a forgone conclusion that one will fall onto the wrists if taking a fall. What many fail to mention, is that learning not to fall on one's wrist needs to be a priority, as it can lead to injury of the wrist, elbow, and shoulder joints, as you mentioned. For beginners, yes. Regarding helmets: Make sure that it is certified! The S1 helmet that you have is, but some companies do produce uncertified helmets that don't effectively reduce the g-forces of impacts. All certified helmets contain rigid EPS foam. BTW, the slide pucks make for a great "horn" of sorts to snap oblivious pedestrians and drivers back into reality if they wander into your line as you whiz past.
@BillStoppard
@BillStoppard 8 лет назад
+Inline Downhill Vancouver Very nice to hear my theory/info regarding wrist guards supported by a downhill expert! I think you would make the ultimate helmet info video or blog Mike. I almost always wear wrist guards, when at the skatepark. When you slip out of a grind you don't have many options for a graceful fall most of the time.
@InlineDownhillVancouver
@InlineDownhillVancouver 8 лет назад
Thomas de Meijer Yeah, fair enough. Aggressive is a different beast with different risks than freeskating, downhill, and just general fitness skating. I'm really not against wrist guards, but just the suggestion that one should rely on them and not try to avoid falling on the wrists.

For skinny jeans, I would advise G-Form protection, I wear these under normal pants but they should fit under a skinny too. G-Form is my favorite anyway, it's the only protection I found that is completely not restrictive, I have the elbow pads, knee pads and compression shorts. Only downside is the price and you got to remember that even though their good, they're still not as effective as bulky pads but close enough for me.

What would you wear for learning the hockey stop? I can do the powerslide and the acid slide, but leaning entirely on one side always makes me feel like I am going to crash and get road burn from my calves and hips all the way up to shoulders, so I've been putting it off for a very long time. Any advice?

Your combo of pads is exactly the same as I use for aggressive (we seriously need to come up with a better name than "aggressive") - including the hockey pads! It does indeed make you feel bullet-proof - but then again you almost are! The knee/shin and hip/thigh protection have paid for themselves many times over.

I put knee pads on OVER whatever pants I'm wearing. Not only do they save the knees, but they save your pants as well! Plus the plastic allows you to slide on the pavement when you fall, which takes away a little bit of the force of impact.

@BillStoppard
@BillStoppard 8 лет назад
+Daniel Souza I go with the knee pads in an indoor park; the close quarters and density of obstacles make streamlining important. Shin pads are a little bulky but huge protection.
@danielpspersonal
@danielpspersonal 8 лет назад
+PintoPonyProductions yeah. I always used HUGE knee pads as my knees are most precious to me. at the moment im using this: www.smithsafetygear.com/collections/elites/products/smith-scabs-elite-ii-knee-pad-black-white . as for shin pads, hockey shin pads are quite rare in Brazil, but I prefer soccer shin pads for rails as they don't hinder my movements and protect my bones. something like this spoart.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/caneleira.jpg . one thing I've been wanting forever is that protection for your hips. I will buy as soon as I have money to spare.
