This is cool. I've been out of prison now for about 4 years. I ended up doing two prison bids. My first one was 8 years. My second one was 3 years. I have been in and out of jail. I bet 30 plus times and I went to multiple prisons starting in Wyoming. Also going to Sayre, Oklahoma and Pocahontas Virginia. I changed my life about 3 years ago. I'm a welder, a father, an addict in recovery and I'm so grateful for the life that I have today and I would never take back all the years that I lost because it helped mold me into the person that I am today

Wow, I can really relate to her! I also had a DUI, didn’t get arrested because I had a wreck and got hurt but ended up arrested for failure to appear (wrote down the wrong date because they surely don’t give you any paperwork!) I didn’t drink in high school and did very well in college. I partied in college but kept it together and graduated with honors. No one would have ever expected that of me but it can happen to any of us! Never drink and drive folks, it’s a recipe for disaster!!! Glad she came out on the other side ❤ very inspirational and another great interview!! Thank you for interviewing more females!

This was a great podcast. I spend 18 month in TDCJ. It was cool to hear what it was like for females in the same system. I really enjoyed her honesty about being so naïve. I was the same exact way. I always thought I would find a way out of it until it all went down.

Man, her lawyer should be disbarred for encouraging her to take a *FELONY* over a misdemeanor smh. That entire thing about a DUI causing more problems than a felony, I've got no idea how that would be true. My friend has a DWI on his record and he still got his CDL several years later, outside of doing 90 days in jail, it's had zero long term impact on his life, let alone anything involving his driving privileges. I'd easily accept the loss of my license for a short period and do a bit of time in county over being a felon for the rest of my life, my firearm rights are wayy more important than the ability to drive for a year or whatever! This entire interview is nothing more than a perfect example of why the war on dr**s is a joke. She had a DUI and one pill, I don't care what it was, it shouldn't have resulted in her having to go to prison and lose her rights for the rest of her life! It was one pill, she wasn't Pablo Escobar 🤦

She didn't say the name of the state jail was in but I can assume (because she said Houston) she went to Plane State. We called it the dog pound. I pulled chain the day that Hurricane Ike hit. I didn't go thru classification for 2 weeks after my arrival. I ended up going to Henley Unit which was on the same property and I still thank GOD for getting away from Plane state. I got out February 9, 2008 and I haven't looked back since. I'm glad to hear that you're doing well, Ariel. It's not easy for a female felon on Texas.

How funny!! I live in Galveston, TX and going to the river is something I grew up doing and as an adult! Its a BLAST as a child or an a adult!

For anyone that has dealt with Texas probation and parole know for fact that parole is WAYYYY easier to complete than probation. At least felony probation. Texas doesn't f around.

The system is so sick, and many of it's people are as well...just t sick people involved in a sick system. It needs tore down and rebuilt.

Ian, you should interview a woman who has done institutional time in Texas (1st, 2nd, or 3rd degree felony) to contrast with Ariel's experience. There are similarities but also many differences. Texas may not have the worst women's system in the US, but it arguably has the toughest, with the heat, forced labor, and frequent strip searches. Texas still has hoe squads for women (may be the only state that still does that) and at the Hobby unit, women returning to their unit from working on hoe squad are stripped outdoors in a group in a sort of "corral" with privacy screens.

The reason you don't get good time in state jail is because state jail is flat time. No parole no time taken off. The day you are sentenced you have your release date as well.

She was Texas State the same time my son was attending. It was party central during that time.

Yeah here in Texas if u refuse to blow into the machine then they take ur blood once u get to jail. Either way ur screwed. Average price of a DUI in Texas in $10k

Lynnwood California county jail was sued for non privacy from the years, idk 2011-18(?). (Texas doesn't pay the state jail inmates for the work, asfaras license plates etc, preformed). It was like $2000 + per female. They performed these body searches outside with generally a curtain or nothing

We have forgotten that Prisons were/are a place of punishment. This is not a summer camp.

It’s crazy taking the felony with the possibility of it being expunged over a dwi like if you violate felony probation you can get a few years the dwi would’ve just been 93 days

Here are the states that don’t pay inmates for any work TEXAS/ARKANSAS/GEORGIA/…and these states allows SOME UNPAID LABOR..ALABAMA/FLORIDA/SOUTH CAROLINA/MISSISSIPPI/OKLAHOMA/…aka just stay free dude😅

What I've noticed. Every single person who goes to jail knows how they can avoid it. Then they decide they aren't going to avoid it. So they experience it. Then they get to decide if next time they are going to avoid it. Avoiding it myself, it's kinda better to avoid it than experience it.

So much of her story does not add up. She is leaving so much out. In Comal county you would never get a 40k bond just for one oxy (2010) or whatever kind of pill she had. If she had no priors and they gave her a 40k bond, they found much than one pill. By the time she was charged, the amount was probably reduced to just one pill, but when she was arrested, it was probably much more. That kind of bond is for possession and intent to distribute. She was definitely selling to at least her social circle. If her felony possession case was going to get dropped after her three years of probation, that means she had a pre-trial diversion agreement for dismissal, which is a very very good deal on a felony charge. And it is better deal is they were going to completely drop the DWI charge because even if the DWI charge would be dismissed after successful probation, the DWI charge is NEVER dropped from your Texas drivers license record, and after the very least she is going to pay about 5k in additional insurance premiums. Not to mention that if she were ever charged with DWI again in Texas, her drivers license would automatically be suspended immediately for 2 years, regardless if she beat the DWI charge in criminal court. Sounds like she does not even understand that the license hearing is completely independent of the criminal DWI charge. She passes off blame about not completing the felony probation on, "she (her first attorney) should have known that I wasn't going to take the probation seriously." So when she didn't complete her probation, she probably kept using and selling to her social circle and when her first attorney found out, her attorney dropped her as a client because the attorney knew she was too much of a risk. And that is when she had to switch attorneys to the male attorney. She skips over that whole part. When her second attorney asked her to ride with him to the court that day, he KNEW that she was going in front of the judge for her probation revocation hearing on her non-compliance of her second probation, and that she was almost certainly going to jail. So either her life was still so chaotic with her pill use that she didn't understand that it was her hearing day (probably he told her and she received paperwork in the mail and from her probation officer that her court coming up) OR, he thought that she was a bad risk client and he set up the probation revocation hearing early. He was pissed off at her as a client and he just wanted to be done with her. As she was probably still missing classes and piss tests and had signs that she was still dealing and using. She couldn't handle it and totally broke down when she went on the stand because she was still using and dealing and the prosecutor caught her in a bunch of lies when she couldn't explain her non-compliance with the probation. Long story short, she can't/won't take accountability for what happened leading up to her incarceration and she very very likely will end up getting popped again. Seen it happen a million times. Until you can take accountability for what really happened and be honest with yourself and others, you are going to repeat the whole process again because you want to keep doing whatever it was that got you to that point in the first place. which in her case is most likely using and small time dealing.

When they gave you 20 months that was 2 punishments together. 1 punishment for the pill 2 punishment for you daring to thumb your nose at the parole system.

Illinois does a blood draw. At least they did for me back in 2011. Arkansas and Wisconsin I did not get my blood drawn

At least in Cali, if you refuse the breathalyzer at the police station then they will order your blood to be drawn to measure the BAC.

Probably 1 of the most annoying people i have ever heard, very lucky she got away with what she did fairly lightly, when u consider other spending 20 yrs and lifetime's in prison for nothing 😮

Weekend jail is not as common any more. There were some jails that were so crowded that you would check in Friday evening by a certain time, you would get credit for that day and then they would release you early Saturday with credit for two days. Her experience sound similar to what I’ve seen with people who are handed diversion programs some sort of alternative sentencing and fail to complete it. The judge will throw the book at you.

Prison generally has better food and more access to things like exercise equipment. They actually have libraries.

Great interview! TDCJ is a joke. They want their AC system for next to nothing. My friends company put in a bid to retrofit a facility and were not selected. TDCJ was sued for not having AC in their facilities.

i got a pretty good story about the probation system and being in county for 3 and a half months along with 6 years of probation and a year of drug court for possession of marijuana which is now legal in ny and i have nothing on my record now

It surprises me that her facility didn't have a vegitarian option. Last I knew TDCJ offered "Meat free", "diet for health" options. Usually the state jail facilities are pretty rough because the inmates don't have much time to do so they don't care. I was interested to know what facility she was in. I was a little disappointed she didn't say.

First, such a gorgeous girl I’m sure you have no issues dating, prison or not. 2nd cool to see someone coming out of a place like small town Texas as it shows the difference in states/political ideologies. Here in the Commie 💩 hole of NY, repeat offenders get multiple DUI/DWI convictions before serving any time but somewhere that holds folks accountable to the law will put you away on 1st conviction after just a little probation complication.
