The Inquisition, formally called the Holy Orders of the Emperor's Inquisition, is a secret organization that exists outside of the standard administrative hierarchy of the Imperium of Man.
The Inquisition acts as the secret police force of the Imperium, hunting down any and all of the myriad threats to the stability of the God-Emperor's realm, from the corruption caused by the forces of Chaos, Heretics, mutants and rebels, to assaults from vicious alien species like the Tyranids, Orks or Drukhari.

29:50 the "Average Inquisitor orders 3 Exterminatus a day" factiod is actually a statistical error. The average inquisitor orders 0 Exterminatus a day. Inquisitor Kryptman, who lives on his ship and orders 10,000 Exterminatus a day, is an outlier and should not have been counted.

To add to what you said, every single Exterminatus is subject to extreme scrutiny by an Ordo Minoris dedicated to the purpose, and 90-99% of Exterminatuses result in "Excommunication," which is of course code for "death warrant" for an Inquisitor. The Ordo Excorium does that, I think.

A good point to make about the Inquisitors being more normal than we make them is that 40k has a lot of more "normal stuff" in it. There are worlds were people live normal lives, have normal jobs, live in normal living conditions, almost never see war or brutality, etc. This then extends to things like Inquisitors, Guard, Governments, even Xenos. Where there is reasonable, down-to-earth "normal stuff" going on with normal people. We just never hear about those because 40K is about the grim dark, and "normal stuff" isn't exactly of interest.

Something to mention on the “0% of chaos corrupted grey knights”: there is story of a “silver knight” going through all the rings of the realm of slaanesh but once he got to slaanesh (who took the form of a innocent boy) he broke down and became corrupted. Granted, we don’t know if it’s a grey knight but it’s the popular theory (some even theorize it being Draigo)

My favorite "Inquisitor getting dick-slapped by Astartes" lore story is when an Inquisitor got caught snooping around the Flesh Tearers' flagship and discovers their Death Company barracks cells and gets caught by the Flesh Tearer librarian and the result was a mind transfer into a Death Company marine and it turned the Inquisitor into a drooling vegetable. Gabriel Seth: "Kindly inform the Inquisition that their representative was like then when he arrived here"

I honestly expected Shy to use one of Vader's flying monkeys instead of the actual dark Lord. The Grey Knights apparently also used to have a tabletop thing that let them flat out ignore ALL plasma attacks. I can deal with them being the cream of the crop, but to say that NONE has fallen to chaos.... I don't know about that. Also, there's THAT story when you get to the Grey Knights. It's not at Demon Kielbasa level of WTFIWWY, but it's still pretty fucking tasteless. Deathwatch is easily the most varied "chapter." Also they have that cool layered vault. Yeah, this is part of why unchecked authority is scary. Because even if their peers disown them.... So the radical/puritan split isn't about how extreme in the murder they are, but how flexible. Oh, I'm pretty sure some inquisitors have more zealotry than brains. Their power over the Astartes is often less than inquisitors think. Of the various chapters not to mess with, Space Wolves, dark Angels, and Black Templars are pretty high on the list. The Imperium is their own worst enemy a lot of the time. Even the Judges of Megacity 1 are generally better than Fyodor. Yeah, there are some major threats that the Inquisition may have to be extreme to deal with, but....

@friendlyneighbourhoodsunwheel
With your rant against the extreme inquisitors I partly get because Karamazov is a prick and ones dedicated to the imperial cult are mainly actually exclusively reYards and are nothing but a detriment to the imperium. However most are right in what they do they cannot spare everyone or aim to please the crowd because the stakes are far to high like you said but their commitment to a firm and harsh action is what does save lives and allows things to go on. The imperium survives because the harsh actions taken by these people, you can't filter out everyone you can't screen everything you can't dodge every battle hard actions need to be taken because other factions will not extend the hand of mercy. The Tyranids are a straight forward enemy in a lot of ways they only have one ambition whereas chaos is a multi headed Hydra that needs a lot of attention in various areas and you do not have the time for nuance.

It all, but most of what the imperium does is out of necessity (not all of course). For instance, why is human life worth so little? Because the imperium literally can’t afford not to. There are too many wars to fight. Too many planets that need recolonizing. Why are the mechanicus so worried about invention: particularly because it is so advanced it is hard to understand and messing with it can be bad. Not just in a boom or blue screen sense. An entire ship class was scrapped because it’s layout looked enough like a chaos symbol that tons went rogue and joined chaos. The imperium isn’t a democracy because even in peace time, can you imagine having elections for the high lords, the logistics of that? More planets could probably get away with it, but not entire sectors. While they are heavy handed, the intense ideological purity requirements because things like chaos and gene stealers are that scary, and even sesesionists are still arguably selfishly weakening the imperium against the next ork WWHHHAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’d say about 80% of what they do is necessary, and 20% is the stuff tacked on or due to corruption, or the flaws in humanity.

I think an important thing to remember is that the Imperium is vast in scale, both in size and in the breadth of what life is like within it. For every hive-world where the air is so polluted one breath would give your cancer cancer, there is a world not far different from modern-day earth, where the people live happy, fulfilling lives. The overarching structure of the Imperium is horrible, and their lack of oversight means that individual planets can be full of some heinous shit. But there are simply too many planets for every last one of them to be absolutely screwed over.

The main difference between a normal inquisitor and a Lord inquisitor is simply political power, Lord inquisitors, like Torquemada Coteas are lords of entire sub-sectors and have their own armies, they can take control of entire Astara Militarum armies in the field and can even push around Astartes Chapters a bit, but they know not to do that, cause inquisitors that fuck with the Astartes tend to disappear, just as the Dark Angels. Also when it comes to internal matters, they tend to have the votes of other inquisitors in their own faction, essentially they're politicians.

I think the issue about defending the Inquisition/Imperium in real life and to whether the Imperium survives because or despite how bad they are is that the Imperium exists in a setting very different from the real world. The Inquisition's extreme religious fanaticism would be inexcusable in our world. Our world also (most likely) does not have the threat of *your vices taking actual physical form and killing billions*. We obviously can't and shouldn't say that it's a positive good that the Imperium is this way, or treat the Imperium as a model to follow in this world, but I do think the nature of the setting changes the rules a bit.

The line about "no heart / no brains" is adapted from Winston Churchill who said "If you're not a liberal when you're young, you have no heart. If you're not a conservative when you're older, you have no brains." Inquisitor Fyodor Karamozov is a reference to the Dostoevsky novel "The Brothers Karamozov" which has a sub-story inside of it called "The Grand Inquisitor". It's amazing, but preeeeeetty grim.
