Tom, it ached me to see you butcher that Costa Rica guess, mixing it up with Brazil, so here's a good tip for you. Here's the word you saw on that sign: "educación" (education/politeness). Coincidently, this word has most of the majors distinctions between Spanish and Portuguese calligraphy in it. The "ón", with the accent, is Spanish, while an "ão", with the squiggle, would be Portuguese. Also, the "c" in "ción" would be a "ç", with the squiggle, in Portuguese (educación -> Spanish/ educação -> Portuguese). So, in a nutshell, if it has squiggles on these letters, it's most likely Portuguese (but also remember Spanish has the famous "ñ" letter with a squiggle!). Glad to see you back, cheers!

It's definitely more strategic to guess at the last second, for the reason you mentioned in that your opponent has no way to gauge how well they're doing, but also that if you go ahead of them with your guess, they have no time to guess again to try and overtake you.

One method for always telling northern Japan from the rest are the roof shapes. Hokkaido and the northern few prefectures of Honshu get the most snow in the world. Look how steep the average house roofs are there, it’s very noticeable.

Little tip from that Brazil one I spotted. In the northern hi sphere satellite dishes point south. In the southern hemisphere they point north.. All the satellites go around the equator

Saving your guess to last benefits you since they only get distance information when you place your marker. They don't know how much closer or further they are if you don't give them a reference.

Quick tip - most satellite dishes point generally towards the equator, so they can tell you the latitude. The dish pointing north (using the compass) at 4:45 in the video proves that the location is in the southern hemisphere. Also, the closer the dish points to the horizon, the higher latitude the location is. The dish at 4:45 looks to be at about a ~30 degree angle from vertical, so I would have started somewhere around that. Rio is at 23 degrees south.

Stop signs can tell a bit about a place. All of Europe except Turkey uses a sign that says STOP, in English, but in Ireland, France, Spain, and Portugal the letters are a bit shorter. In South Africa the white border is much thicker. Central American Latin countries have signs that read ALTO, but South American Latin countries use PARE. It can be tricky to distinguish Japanese from Chinese sometimes, but Japan has very distinctive upsidedown triangle stop signs.

this is how to use the angle of the road easily: turn to face exactly north (just like tom does), then angle the camera straight down. the angle of any road lines in shot will match with the angle of the road on the map. but first look ahead and behind on the road to tell which way it turns, to single out good options of roads that fit the angle

The road markings at 7:34 with yellow outer lines are found in Jordan, Israel and the UAE, as well as southern Africa. An easy meta clue to distinguish Jordan and Israel is the black Google car found in Jordan. If you dont like to use meta, Israel will usually have yellow plates. However using meta will give you the correct answer of Jordan 100% of the time :)

Quick tips to distinguish portuguese from spanish: portuguese words NEVER end with "idad" or "ción", they end with "idade" and "cião". Spanish: necesidad / educación. Portuguese: necessidade / educação. If you see words finishing with "idad" or "ción", it's spanish. "Perro" is a word that does not exit in portuguese as well, in portuguese dog is "cachorro" or "cão".

4:23 you missed even better clue about the hemisphere than the sun. The satellite TV antenna on the house points to the north. The always point to satellites on geosynchronous orbit, which is high above the equator. You could even estimate the latitude from the N-S angle of the antenna. The closer to equator they are the higher the antenna points. E-W pointing direction depends on which specific satellite they are pointing at.

at that third location in the 1st round you missed an easy clue. the satellite dish. Satelite dishes point towards geostationary satellites which by definition are always orbiting above the equator. so the fact that it was pointing northwards means you have to be in the southern hemisphere. You can even guess the approximate latitude from the angle of the dish.
