Anything above the shoulder defeats the original point of ape hangers. When American GIs came home from WW2 they modified surplus Harley's to be more comfortable on long highway runs. One of the ways they accomplished this was by making the reach straight forward and seating lower. A lot of these seemingly pointless mods often have an overlooked history and practical application.

The ones that are like eye-level or maybe a little above the rider's head I can see being a personal preference comfort wise. The ones that have the rider's arms practically straight up in the air though, never mind if they are comfortable are not, I wonder how well can you control the bike like that?

I have a chopper that has its forks barely brought forward, and it’s got ape hangers that sit a little below chest level. Basically it’s barely choppered out, and the turn radius on it is pretty bad. Idk how half these guys ride how they have their bikes set up. I guess they just don’t turn, that’s the only answer.

Plot twist, I just put 14" apes on my bike and I love 'em. Controls are a bit below my shoulders. I kept going higher and higher with risers and rolling my stock bars more vertical, so I figured I might as well give apes a try. Low speed maneuvering is surprisingly easier, I assume because of the increased leverage. Eye level to top of head has to be the limit for reasonable control though.

Saw a pack of Harleys once - no helmets - it was raining hard - felt most sorry for the ones with ape hangers - nowhere to hide - pelted with huge raindrops at 70mph - chest, arms face and head just eating it. Laughed my ass off

Anybody making a negative comment about tall ape hangers are completely clueless that they are the most comfortable handlebars made. I could say the same thing about the low pussy bars that is all they can handle and I wonder if any of those guys know how stupid they look going down the highway. What gets me are ape hangers on a touring bike with a fairing. The fairing is for extending your riding into cold temp's but with the hand's above the fairing even with gloves your hands get frozen. It's just a stupid thing to do.

Yeah, I had handle bars like that on my Stingray bicycle. The engineers took logic, math, safety and comfort in mind.... making the forks shorter..... I on the other hand cut the forks off another bike, pounded them on the forks of my bike and made it a death trap on jumps!

No wonder they fall down, they’re so difficult to safely control with your arms fully extended. On long rides their arms probably lose circulation which means even worse fine motor control which leads to poor brake, clutch, and throttle control. All so they cal look kewl 😂

These bars are ridiculous,I never touched ape hanger h/bars,I went for hi/risers which came up to chest height or just a little lower which were really comfortable to use,and as a bonus I had great blood circulation in both arms.

@@Fearless154 That guy with the yellow bike with flames lives in the St. Louis area and that crazy MFer can ride...Whatever your taste is I have seen him ride and he has some skills...I know he has ridden that bike all over the country I also have seen him riding that bike all year round... I think that bike pictured has a hand shift/foot clutch not an easy combo when paired to a crazy set up...As far as the MSF course I have been riding for over 45 years on all types of bikes and there is always something to learn.

I thought these were cool when I was a kid. Then one day volunteering in the morgue. We got two bags. One with arms. One with the body missing the arms. The highway patrol found one arm in a near by house, the other in the cab window of the truck that hit the right handle bar when the motorcycle was taking a turn and the body in the street near the bike. Unfortunately wasn’t the only motorcyclist coming in missing arms from ape bars. But the most motorcyclists our morgue got was guys who wore brain buckets instead of full face. Usually the crotchet rockets.
