Malaysia and Asia in general is known for their huge malls, so we set out to explore one of the biggest ones in Kuala Lumpur to see what all the fuss is about!
The mall we visited was Berjaya Times Square in central KL. It includes an indoor theme park with a roller coaster, and happens to be the second largest indoor theme park in Asia. It also happens to be one of the largest shopping malls in the world.
The mall itself has thousands of stores so we spent a significant amount of time just exploring the various floors and seeing what was there. We also checked out the theme park but didn’t go on any rides.
While at the mall we tried some Malaysian desserts including, Talam, ondeh-ondeh and pulut tai tai. Along with our desserts we got a couple of drinks- a coco latte, and brown sugar pearl milk tea.

------------------
Berjaya Times Square Kuala Lumpur was officially opened on 29th September 2003 by Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. The RM1.75 billion building was developed by Berjaya Assets Berhad which is majority owned by Tan Sri Dato' Seri Vincent Tan.
With over 2.5 million people visiting the mall each month, Berjaya Times Square prides itself as the best shopping experience under one roof for locals and tourists alike.
Talam ondeh-ondeh :
These tasty kuih are made from glutinous rice flour, corn flour, palm sugar and grated coconut. The dough is divided into tiny balls which are dropped in boiling water to cook. The cooked desserts are then rolled in grated coconut.
Pulut tai tai
‘Pulut tai tai’ or ‘pulut tekan’ is a Nyonya kuih made of fluffy glutinous rice steamed in coconut milk. Known as pulut tekan because it literally translates to ‘pressed glutinous rice’, kuih pulut tekan is served together with 'kaya' which is a coconut milk spread.

When people tell you its traditional, dont go for it. There is a reason why its "traditional". They are not popular anymore and most younger generation didnt buy it. That why those kuih is hard to find. Most vendor do not sell these kind of kuih because its hard to sell. Popular kuih in malaysia is always karipap, pisang goreng, donut, cucur udang. Most people would suggest you something rare which equivalent to not popular. Be specific when you ask. Ask local, what food is popular and which popular spot you should go for food

Actually there is still a lot doing this kind of dessert in malaysia, dont be mistaken, we do still love this kind of dessert, but most of malaysian preffered something fried,hot or spicy, as you guys, too much of sweet may kind of disturbin to eat. It is not about popular,traditional or not, just making the dessert itself was time consuming and less sellable in market, so they prefer not to sell and focus on sell something easier and make more profit. Just you dont buy the dessert the same amount & quantity as "goreng pisang" , doesnt make the dessert not popular or non preferred, it just we cant take too much sweet and this dessert couldnt last longer as it make from coconut milk. Actually till now, its still easy to look for all this kind of "traditional" kuih even in KL city centre either morning or in the evening. 😎

The dipping sauce is called kaya (kha-yha), it comes into two different flavours. The pandan (a kind of YOUNG corkscrew pine leaves also available in southern Florida, too old and overly matured leaf is no good) flavour and the egg coconut milk flavour. The sticky rice is actually glutinous rice (it is also a kind of staple food and very common in Thailand) and the blue colour comes from a kind of dark blue butterfly pea flower and the local Malays called it bunga telang. This kind of flower is well adapted to local weather and soil, can be easily grown and blossomed at anytime of the year.

kuih talam (talam means tray) as the kuih is made in a tray it is called that..... made from rice flour and coconut milk and the green one they put pandan leaves juice in it and typically they put salt in the coconut part to enhance the creaminess of the coconut milk...... as for the one you called dipping sauce its kaya (a coconut custard) we spread it on bread too..... onde- onde rice flour mixed into a dough with a little pandan juice and sometime green colouring pinch alittle roll into a ball, flatten it and put a cube of diced gula melaka (palm sugar) and cover and roll it into a ball cooked in boiling water until it floats and scoop it up, drain and roll intograted coconut ...

@repz9190
@repz9190 5 лет назад
@@DelightfulTravellers the talam should be eaten both upper and lower part together, then you get the balance flavour of it. If eat the bottom part 1st, it is too sweet for some people, if top part 1sr it is salty or too salty for a dessert. So better try both part together.

Hey guys, welcome to Malaysia! Been following some of your videos lately and loving the relaxed pace and cheerful vibe. 🍃 The particular stall where you tried the desserts is part of the Nyonya cuisine, a sort of Malay-Chinese fusion cooking style that is associated with Peranakan culture which is prominent in Penang and Melaka. It's one of my favourite cuisines, the fusion of spices creates a rich unique flavour; do find an authentic Nyonya restaurant and order several dishes to try, pair it with rice. The kueh Pulut Tai Tai is made of glutinous rice with some butterfly-pea flower juice (which gives it some colour) and is served with Kaya (a thick custard made with regular eggs or duck eggs cooked until caramelised, with some pandan leaves which gives it the green colour and sweet vanilla-like flavour). Pandan leaves are used in a lot of desserts and dishes in Malaysia due to its fragrance. We don't dip Kaya with other kuehs though, as they are already very sweet. Kaya literally translates to 'rich' in Malay; it's the most common 'jam' used throughout Malaysia, we pair Kaya with bread and butter (do try the traditional charcoal toasted bread with this combination). Pearl Milk Tea / Bubble Tea is originated from Taiwan, but is popularised in Asia which is why you see it everywhere. The pearls are made from tapioca. Do try KOI's Golden Bubble Milk Tea, one of my favourite Pearl Milk Tea brand. I find their Bukit Bintang outlet having a more consistent quality than their other outlets. I'm surprised you haven't visit an authentic Malaysian cuisine yet. Do visit Madam Kwan's and try out some of the food there. Some of my favourite dishes are the Nasi Bojari, Nasi Lemak (our unofficial national dish), and Mixed Satay. If you want to try some new drinks, Teh Tarik (pulled black tea with condensed milk) is sort of our unofficial national drink, Bandung (rose syrup with condensed milk) for something exotic, or just go with the standard Ice Lemon Tea which is refreshing and common throughout Malaysia. There are many more things in Malaysia to discover, but the internet is your guide haha! Safe travels. 🙏🏻💕

The jelly consistency is from sticky rice and tapioca flour, all the green comes from pandan leaf, which is a shrub that is pretty common. You can use the leaves as a tea, goes well with lemon grass.

Fun local insight to Berjaya Times Square: (1) It might be the biggest mall in term of number of lots and floors but only the first 2-3 floors matters. The higher you go, the smaller the shops are. and I think from level 7 and upwards are basically 80% empty. (2) And yes, the net was in place because there was two suicides happened in the mall. One was a girl with mental health and second was a dude who plunged to his death right after his girlfriend broke up with him while shopping. (3) 8 out of 10 locals never been to this indoor theme park. Check out Sunway Lagoon for a better one. Their main group of visitors are non-local Malaysians and middle east visitors.

The blue rice cake dessert you tried is made of glutinous rice and colored with a blue flower. The "dipping sauce" is a Malaysian jam made with coconut milk, brown sugar and eggs. Kuih talam literally means Tray cake .... what it's made in. The white bit is coconut milk that's flavored with salt and the green bit is flavored with pandanus leaves. The daun pandan or pandanus leaves is the go to natural coloring for most green foods in South east Asia. The ondeh-ondehs have brown sugar inside. These are all steamed desserts. We have a whole slew more that are fried, baked etc. Practically every state has its own specialty. Penang is going to be insane as it's THE food capital - biased Penangite speaking :)

This was the mall I went to very often when I was very little. I don't remember much of it, but I remember the caterpillar ride in the theme park. Mall culture in Malaysia is big because there's not much else to do other than eat and melt in the heat. It also acts as a place to meet friends or spend family time. Also, the arts/crafts scene isn't that big so there's not really a citizen-based community around those things. There's not really a huge literary culture either. There's many many malls dotted around even just KL, from Amcorp Mall (technically in Selangor, a neighbouring state) to Mid Valley Megamall (a.k.a. Megamall) and The Gardens Mall. If you're curious, you should check out Amcorp Mall - it's almost like a time capsule! The traditional sweets you tried are Nyonya (Perakanan Chinese/Malay) kuih (cake). The sweet ones are generally made of coconut milk, sticky rice and pandan. Pandan is a fragrant leaf which is commonly used in Malay cooking. If you want better kuih, I would suggest going to a Pasar Malam (Night Market) where they are made fresh. Bubble tea is not actually Malaysian food, it's actually Taiwanese.

8:59 is not brown sugar, that's coconut sugar made from coconut (Cocos nucifera) sap from the flowering stems (ie. before the flowers become fruit). It is then cooked to reduce and caramelized it, and when it cool down to room temperature it crystallize. People often call it palm sugar, but that's a misnomer because palm sugar actually refers to sugar from another kind of palm tree (Malay; pokok kabung, Arenga pinnata) that grows in river swamps.

her first drink was bubble milk tea usually the kuih that you find green and white are literally just coconut milk and pandan with rice cake flour. most of typical coconut milk dan pandan mix kuih are serve with brown sugar or palm sugar. like lompat tikam, onde onde,puteri mandi. puteri mandi kinda similar to onde2 but onde2 hve the brown sugar inside but puteri mandi is surround with brown sugar gravy. puteri means princess while mandi means bath or shower. so it's like the kuih is getting bath in the brown sugar haha further more if you wanna find several types of malay desserts, just by asking "can we find nearby place that sell kuih?" hope it's helping pronounce kuih as kuwih

these local desserts you both were tasting are called the "Nyonya Kuihs" a type of southeastern fusion ethnicity Baba-Nyonya/Penarakan that can be discover in Malaysia/Singapore. The new flavor you tried is from Pandan leaves juiced & the natural greenest like wheatgrass but more flavorful. That dipping sauce is Kaya, a type of liquidy coconut custard, we all used it as bread/toast spread if you find them in a bottle, green or yellow depends on the eggy/pandan portion~ We tend to love sweet mix salty flavors, with some infusions usually (lemongrass/other herbs), thus you always get explosions of tastes in our areas. =)

The green thing is Pandan. I really think its as delicious a flavouring as vanilla, but at a fraction of its price. Very underrated flavour. But the mindset of colonised people is that the invader has better stuff so vanilla is the symbol of luxury. The "brown" sugar isnt really brown sugar but coconut sugar called gula melaka. Id equate gula melaka comparable to maple syrup. A long time ago after trying maple syrup, I envy the Canadians for easy access to it, but soon came to the conclusion they dont get to taste gula melaka either so I now pity them. Sadly most commercial ones are cut with cane sugar because the pure original version is expensive.
