The best things don't last -- would you live in a place with an interior you have full creative control over, fully knowing it will only be around for a year or so?

As an architecture student, I believe this apartment is a work of art on its own. The rooms intersects through the soft play of light and shadows, combined with subtle material and level changes. I was really surprised at the level of detail the interior designer or architect put into this.

It's such a shame that Japan is tearing down beautiful and unique looking building that are only decades old due to lack of maintenance and care. But it's also ironic since they're very good at taking care of structures that are hundreds of years old that will most likely never be torn down.
@iFireender
@iFireender 2 года назад
It's not 'ironic' - it's just the way they do things. Buildings for 'living in' are made to last for a few decades, then to be rebuilt, while other buildings are made to last longer. In Switzerland, where I live, for example, buildings are made to last a lot longer - BUT, you need to renovate them every few decades. The house I grew up in for example - if I stay in the area, I'll move into it within the next 10 years or something - and with that will come a huge renovation - it was built in the 70s.

What an interesting space. And that living area was humongous for a Japanese apartment. Came over to your channel thanks to exposure from Sharla, Chris, and Connor's channels. I know you seem to focus mainly on the higher end or weird of real estate, but you are constantly in the field getting exposure to housing costs in Japan. How far distance or time wise do you have to travel outside of the Tokyo bubble or center to reach the more reasonable or affordable places? Also, what have you and your business observed to be the relationship between affordability of housing in Japan and affordability of housing in other countries such as the U.S., where the housing market is going bonkers and needs a correction so that more Americans can be more secure in the affordability of their housing?
@TokyoPortfolio
@TokyoPortfolio 2 года назад
As long as you are not in the very most central parts of Tokyo (Minato, Shibuya, Meguro, parts of Shinjuku, Shinagawa, and Setagaya), then prices will not be too expensive. Japan's housing prices are quite low in comparison to other countries, especially the US, and if anything are starting to finally go up. Tokyo's prices may be higher than many international cities, but not all -- a normal 1-bedroom in central Tokyo costs about $1,000-$2,000 depending on the area. Try getting a 1-bedroom apartment in a central neighborhood in Los Angeles or New York for less than $2,000 a month! If you're okay with being less-central (and don't care about age of building), you can easily find a 1 bedroom for less than $600 a month.
@anthonynelson6671
@anthonynelson6671 2 года назад
@@TokyoPortfolio Wow, thanks for the very quick reply. Thankfully am not in the LA or NY area but am in the DFW area so not a very chilled down place for real estate prices right now either. Also I've heard that there can be observed some trends in Japanese house prices to somewhat decrease in value/cost over time in stark contrast to how homes in the U.S. seem to skyrocket over time. Is this a rumor or is some of this actually true?

There's a reason they are the same...it's because they are not that expensive to put in and they are beautiful. Whenever I renovate my places, I always do something similar. Great value. You can get clean places at affordable prices. You say depressing, but I find the Japanese bathrooms clean and easy to clean where tiles make me feel like Im staying at a cheesy hotel. And I don't wnat to see UNDER my bathtub. To each their own, but I prefer Japanese bathrooms hands down. I allow my tenants to modify my places in the way they like as well...within reason.

I'm not an architect, an artist, a realtor or a student of neither but I understand the beauty of this place. That being said, to me, again not in any way a qualified person, doesn't seem like a great place to live, it looks like a gem or a work of art but that's it, it lacks comfort, it's old and used, the location is great but the usage of space is weird and inconvenient. I do hope however that the new building that replaces it isn't a generic boring apartment complex but instead has personality like this one, just maybe a better utilitarian design.
