Inside a Marq LED smoke machine from CPC. (With schematic.)

More or less the same as a shady eBay unit, but with all the extra safety features required for compliance with local safety standards. This unit seems quite good for the lower end market it's aimed at.
This version came from CPC in the UK, but I'd guess it's available from other sources around the world. It looks like one of the many branded versions of generic products, where they have been made to a specification suited to the target market.

There do seem to be other sellers including on eBay, but there also appear to be similar but completely non compliant versions on eBay. An XLR (microphone) remote connector is a red flag. It's often being used at full mains voltage and poses a massive shock risk if cables get mixed up and a microphone gets plugged in.
If the smoke switch is left on the unit alternates between blowing out fog for about 15 seconds and then reheating for 30 seconds.

Electricity run through smoke. That is why they stop working when you let the smoke out. These smoke machines have to keep refilling the smoke and so should never run empty.

I can't say I've had any issues with your audio etc. I adore your videos, often if I can't sleep at night, stress/anxiety or whatever, putting your videos on are so soothing. Something about the Scottish accent spoken softly is very soothing. I think in the years I've been watching your video, I can't say I am now an expert in electronics. But no matter what the video, I watch it intently anyway. Always fascinating and great content. But thank you Clive. You genuinely sooth me and help my mind rest at stressful times.

I am Scottish and totally agree as does my wife who usually is irritated by videos I watch (sorry EEVblog, but I'm fine with Dave). There is a fantastic small community of talented fact based you tubers out there. The one thing they have in common is a lack of managers consultants or a marketing team just pure talent and a love for what they do. Restores ones hope for humanity. Bring back phone sanitisers Douglas Adams was right. I watch these videos in bed so have to view many times as I nod off in the middle of them which is a good thing.

We used one of these to rapidly generate enough smoke to fill a railway carriage so we could test the HVAC system's ability to purge smoke from the carriage and also to check the adjacent carriages' ability to contain smoke in one car by pressurising these carriages' relative to the carriage with the fire. A good piece of test work spoiled only by someone ordering strawberry flavour smoke. We were nearly puking by the end of the test due to the sickly sweet nature of the flavour any.

I actually get those timers and hardwire them in place of the simple switch. Always double checking the correct connections. As for the diagram. The green wire is there to give a guaranteed visual indicator of it being ready. If it was removed as in the theoretical modification then the led would never lite if the switch was closed. I do like that a diode was placed in series with it because most I have seen don't. Another modification I like is to add my own fluid bottle backlight if there is none.

Despite your misgivings, the sound using your current technique seems very good to me. Nice tonal balance (as always) and the boost in post hasn't brought up any discernable background noise.

The xlr connecters they use are for the DMX connection which allows it sync up with a lighting controller so the lighting technician can control it as well as the lights scanners pyrotechnics and other stuff all in one location. DMX revolutionized the lighting/effects market. The also use rj45 for Ethernet universes that can connect also. Carry on, nice video don't get that beard stuck in the housing lol

I ordered one similar to this from E-bay about 5 years ago (500 Watt). I still have it and it still works. It was black and had Multi colored lights with wireless remote. On mine the lights just flashed, but seem to react to noise or music.(ie flashed faster or slower could be my imagination but seemed to) As for your explanation of how the pump works, I was always wondering why not use a Windshield washer pump from a automobile instead since it is more reliable. So you informing the piston type is for metering makes sense. I actually stepped up to a Chauvet Lighting Hurricane which can run way longer bursts then the 500 watt. It was a either a 1200-1500 watt unit. It worked much better in the cold when we were trying to make a nice halloween outdoor display. Was nice, we had Fog cooled with ice, tomb stones, we were dressed in black light painted characters with 6 double 4 foot Fluorescent black lights. Many of the younger kids were a bit afraid, but we soon showed we were friendly beasts...lol. Anyway thanks for the video.

When I was a kid working on our school events, I got a siimlar one with the XLR for the remote. The remote's XLR was made out of plastic on the outside, but I decided to add my 30m XLR to it to control it from FOH. My XLR was obviously metal, and the outer ring was wired to shield - in this case, when you pressed the fire button it was live. We found out the hard way.

I repaired many smoke machines (the pump failed, bad batch of pumps), and they are made the same. Ours had a disconnectable remote, that use the same connector as the power connector on your computer. Theorically you can plug an AC cord in it and blow something... The newer version fixed one small issue that those basic machines have: when the heater is on, you can't blow smoke. The new machine use some electronics to fix the issue. I don't know the temperature, but let's say that the heater stop at 285°C, but the pump is disabled bellow 250°C. This way, even if the heater is on, you can still blow some smoke out, as long as the block is still hot enought. My testings show 15 secs of smoke when hot, and 10 when the heater kick back. So you do indeed have lots of smoke available at all time. The basic ones... may let you down during a show when you want the smoke to come "now"... However they didn't had to go with electronics. They could have went full mechanical. Just add a second thermostat. Also, the newer one have a low fluid sensor in the tank. They could have used one that is rated for main voltage instead of logic level, and put it in series with the pump.

When I was an extra in a film back in 1985 they used machines that they referred to as "benzers" these produced vast quantities of smoke that smelt of kerosene. They were used to cover up parts of the town Kings Lynn and Ely) that needed to be masked from the film due to being far to modern.

I think the description on the box of creating a mood makes me think, if say you went to someone's house for a romantic meeting or whatever and they had used that fog machine I'd think the house was on fire, lol. :-) Interesting unit though , thanks for the video. Science geek allert! At normal temperature and pressure: water boils at ~100C, Propylene glycol boils at ~188C. Propylene glycol and water can be mixed and they stay mixed (as opposed to a freshly made oil and vinegar salad dressing which separates out rapidly after shaking). When the Propylene glycol and water mix (20%PG 80%H2O - 30%PG 70%H2O) is heated in a smoke machine (or more correctly a fog machine) the water goes from a liquid to a gas (vapour) however the propylene glycol stays liquid. The ultra-fine bits (molecules) of Propylene glycol helps the water vapour to condense to form a 'fog'. (This is one form of nucleation. I had to put this word in somewhere as it took me an age to remember it.) Now normally fog only forms under set temperature and humidity conditions (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fog). Fog machines are typically used outside the range of conditions where fog would occur naturally, which is why artificial 'fog' doesn't last long.

Nice to find a good machine, only thing i would change is to wire the blue led's so they come on permanently, or so they come on when hot. Or you could add a large capacitor so they stay on for a while after fogging

i have a beamz Rage 600I fog machine, with a hardwired remote and a IEC powerlead, its fused both at the fog machine and the plug. its a 600w fogger. i highly reccomend it, i got it awhile ago from ebay, its thermostatically controlled and has a short heat up time, and when it needs to reheat after ejecting fog its very quick to reheat so its ready to eject more fog. but the fog dosent go through a hose at the top of the lid what screws onto the tank, it goes out of a hole somewhere in the 500ml tank, and on mine if its reheating/heating up, you cant use the remote it disables the remote so it cant produce raw liquid what you've said in your video. It lights up red on the remote to let you know its heating up or reheating, and green when its ready to eject fog.

@@riav2785 Numark was the first brand Jack O'Donnel bought up and I think as time went on inMusic became the umbrella company for all the names he owns (about 16 of them now). I don't work for a specific brand so I manage all the web hosting and the Linux infrastructure for all of the brands. I'm guessing from the name and the fact it was Numark you were based out of the Cumberland RI office which is the main HQ now. I've actually only ever set foot in one office and that was Cambridge in the UK. I work from home near Nottingham, UK.

I have a ProSound fogger that I got from Maplin back in the day, and it has a detachable remote; the remote has a type E coupler which plugs into the fogger's type F socket, so there's no chance to touch live pins. The switch looks very similar to yours except it's momentary. So those parts do exist on an electrically UK legal product (I assume maplin is/was a reputable supplier!) even if your CPC-bought unit stuck with the hard-wired remote and toggle switch.

Hey I love my G7 Power. It gives up the fancier camera and bigger speakers for a 5 amp hour battery . It takes entirely adequate if not better than average 1080p 60 hertz video.

The Open Camera app is the one to use for videos and photos on Moto type phones (imo). When you tweak the settings to your liking, results are outstanding.

I suspect they used the extra green wire so that the "ready" LED doesn't go off when you turn on the switch. On the other hand, this design means that a short between the green and black wire would bypass the thermostat. This happened to a friend of mine when he lost the remote and soldered a link in the wrong place to bypass it. Fortunately the thermal fuse blew!

You mentioned you are using the Moto G7, and audio, I had to mention.. The G7 is capable of recording audio in stereo. There is a mic on each end of the phone, (when held in the proper horizontal recording position) I know this because I have the Moto G7 Power. Having stereo sound is nice in a world of videos with monaural audio. (The "Power" designation coming from having the 6,000 mah battery, with the 3 amp "Turbo Power" charger)

Having the separate driver for the leds is nice. The leds are kind of trash. Might be nice to totally replace them with RGB leds. Another missed opportunity is it'd be easy to make that bottle removable and much easier to restock it and remove the bottle while in storage.

My father used Ozium to keep the smell of trysts with his mistresses from stinking up his car. I use it for eliminating cigarette smoke odor from my car. To each his own, I guess. It is a really great product though!

I have an old 400W Maplins unit with a momentary switch that looks identical to the switch on this unit. I am guessing that they specified that but it was unavailable so they second sourced a toggle switch.

The last smoke machine I worked on needed a new liquid pump. I discovered that the pumps have a 1N4007 in series with the pump solenoid, so it is not run on the full wave of the AC voltage.

In mine, the remote switch can be left on and the machine will make fog independently whenever it goes up to temp. The LED would go on and off showing that it is up to temp.

The Jessops store near me was closed down several years ago, on the last day, for a giggle the staff let off the security fogging machine that was supposed to protect them from stick-ups... certainly made a lot of long lasting fog - presumably there's no time for a generator to heat up when some armed bandit is sticking you up... so are they based on pressurised gas?

What happens when you let the switch on the on position? Can it do some sort of continuous mode or will it end up squirting the juice when it cools down too much?

I still can’t get over the use of rectangles for resistors versus the American-style zigzags, which seem to make more sense. But then again I was born and raised in Illinois and have spent only a few months in all of my life outside the USA...

Hey Clive, I’m only half way through watching this video at the moment so you may have already answered my question but I haven’t gotten to it yet, but... Do you know whether or not these type of smoke machines will set off sensitive smoke alarms? Cheers.

Shoulder have a BigClive qoute bingo every video. Wait to hear them, then mark them off lol... Also, was there a neon in the remote switch. I wasn't sure if it lit up or if it wasn't working at all.

Right at the beginning you mentioned Lenovo in relation to the artifact contrast line around "MARQ". Are we to assume that you use a tablet as your over the bench camera? (in another video you mentioned using a smartphone, I think) Could you show us your setup? I've been very curious for quite awhile.
