We're all wondering: what would you possibly do with the house in the house?

The secret house inside the house is probably one of the coolest things I've ever seen and a smart way to preserve a part of history. I'm kind of glad they built it into the house since Japan isn't really know for preserving older buildings

This is a house with a multiple personality disorder and various identity crisis's going at the same time. It is absolutely a hot mess and still glorious. From the erratic tilework, mixed design themes to having a pawnshop built into it and then going back to just plain old regular tatami rooms and a standard japanese kitchen and bedrooms. To just finally ripping off it's mask and showing it was all built around a old warehouse. I admire the confidence and dedication of the people that shaped this house to what it became, but damnit it is loopy. I love it.

Wow, I've been watching various videos where you see tatami mats but as soon as you said the smell of tatami I was hit was a childhood memory of sleeping on a tatami surface. I was born in Taiwan, not Japan, but we do have some Japanese cultural influences. I guess one of those is sleeping on tatami grass. I remember we had a roll my parents or grandparents would unroll for you to lie on. It's great because it still feels cool to the touch even when its super hot. And that smell, I can still smell it now even though I haven't seen tatami or used it in 20ish decades!

39cm for outer walls is on the lower end of the stand for many places where I'm from. xD At least in older homes. Id love to move and live in Japan but got a few problems, I'm disabled and can't work ever again, can't even legally work. If I leave Australia I don't get disability anymore...and well I am a white Australian male, been told by Japanese friends that live here that it's fine to visit but esp in the more rural areas...where I'd want to live. Foreigners aren't welcomed much. Maybe oneday, I'll just have to win the lotto I never enter and find a way to make ot so I'm atleast tolerated. (Seriously my Japanese friends have really driven home how little white males are welcome to live there, can't remember the word they absolutely love calling me, and they have made it clear if they had to chose between saving a random. Japanese person or myself they would not only save the Japanese person but make sure I was finished off, yet they call me a friend).

What is the thing with Americans and the need for one room to be the "master" bedroom? One bedroom to rule them all?? I grew up in a house with 5 bedrooms, and the one my parents slept in, was sized right in the middle, and no different than the other ones. And that is very common in my country. No "master". Would an American always call the biggest bedroom the master bedroom? Or would it be the room where the parents/house owners sleep, no matter the size?

My overall feeling is one of claustrophobia and darkness. I also feel that I would get both tired and lost trecking to the one bathroom located on the 1st floor. The wood tones, though beautiful, and small size of useable windows likely contribute to the lack of natural light. Thus the need to keep the lamps on in the middle of the day. However, for the space, it is obvious that an immense amount of care was used in its construction and preservation. Nicely done, but not for me.
