Inside an Aldi solar PIR light (with schematic)

This is a much simpler light than normal. Instead of the multiple options including continuous low light at dusk, switching to higher illumination when movement is detected, this unit just has a single function - switch on when movement is detected at night.
Unlike many of the shady grey imports from eBay, this unit has the sort of protection that you'd expect to be associated with a big name trying to protect its reputation.
There's still the issue of the lithium cell being outdoors in deep winter though.
I emulated the lithium cell with the bench power supply and the LED current was as follows:-
4.2V 1100mA
3.5V 530mA
3V 289mA
That's quite high for 12 ordinary LEDs in that style.
After removing one of the resistors the current was 790mA at 4.2V
Adding an extra resistor between one of the LED panel wires and it's PCB pad would allow a balance between night illumination level and the available daytime solar energy to keep the unit topped up. A value of 2.2ohms to 10 ohms could be used
If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:-
www.bigclive.co...
This also keeps the channel independent of RU-vid's advertising algorithms allowing it to be a bit more dangerous and naughty.

I have one from Dollar General here in the US I got for a slight bit of extra security(my area has had a rash of golf cart thefts as custom lifted ones are popular here, and can be easy to steal if not locked up tight) as I can see it from my bedroom, it's on the front of my workshop, it has a slight purple hue to the LED's, in my cast it's nice that you have to get fairly close for it go off, and it has dusk detection, but it's been working fine for almost 4 years now held on just with the 3M strips it came with onto the metal with no weather protection besides the slight roof overhang.

I have many of these scattered around my house. I took all of them apart and installed an ESP8266 on the inside, connected in parallel with the LED, when the LED light's up the ESP8266 is powered. It sends a message to a web server, triggers a routine on the alexa app who then says "Movement detected in the backyard/front yard/Gate ect ect. And then goes straight into deep sleep mode. Been running them with the ESP8266 for about 3 months now and they work every time. Great that it only detects movement at night. The PIR could be a bit less sensitive because stray cats often trigger them. But I guess I cant expect more for such a cheap device that's quite reliable. Good bang for buck these.

We bought six of these a few years back. The epoxy-coated solar panels do need an occasional polish to remove surface haze / whitening (Brasso works a treat), but apart from such "maintenance" they have proved very reliable. Drill a hole or two in the lower part (right at the base) and you won't have any water ingress problems. Ours had genuine Samsung Li Ion cells (18650's).
@Chrisamic
@Chrisamic 2 года назад
Some of the resin coating they use on the solar cells is soluble in alcohol, probably clear diterpene resins. I discovered this by accident when I tried to clean a solar cell on some garden lights. Now, if I've got some old panels on which the resin has become crazed, dull, or discoloured I cover the surface in alcohol and let it reflow the surface for a minute or two and then let it dry without touching it. It keeps it good for another couple of years.

@@Chrisamic Thank you for that very useful info! The Wife has a thing about solar wind chimes, and more than a few are looking a bit sad, so that might save me a few hours' polishing! Any alcohol OK? I have access to 95% EtOH and 99% Isopropanol.
@Chrisamic
@Chrisamic 2 года назад
@@phils4634 Sorry I was having trouble replying for some reason. I just use methylated spirits (metho) which is usually just ethyl alcohol with some bitrex added to stop people drinking it. It's the cheapest option here (Australia) and by my understanding the cleaning action on plastics and PCBs is a little more aggresive than isopropyl alcohol. Only if it's something very delicate or important do I use iso. ETA: don't be tempted to touch the resin to see if it's dry as it's easy to leave your fingerprints in it and it does take some time to re-harden. Leave it out in the sun for a few hours and it should come good.

@@Chrisamic , thats good to know about the alcohol. ive got an older model. it has needed repairs. i had to remove the haze. i used various grades of wet and dry. it allowed water inside so it got silicone over all joints. i added the reflector out of a light to try boost the solar cell. it needs to face the sun or it doesnt work so it faces away from where i can see it. it doesnt produce much light. but after a long time it still works and hasnt needed my attention to keep it working. i"m also in australia.

Normally, care-in-opening warnings ARE placed on the box or carton in question. But since it was all formatted to be consumer packaging with wall to wall printing, they couldn't. Ah, genius idea, put it on the leaflet. At least if the consumer did damage it, which should be uncommon, now they are warned not to use it, and the safety regulator is happy even if the customer is all "well, why didn't you tell me it was so flipping vulnerable to cutting."

We have like 20 of these around our back yard. Not specifically this brand though. Use them for knowing where the dogs are at in the middle of the night. We've had to replace quite a few lately, and the ones we got don't work like the old ones. The old ones would stay dim and brighten up with movement. But the new ones don't seem to have this function. Spiders really seem to like making nests in the back cover and some-how get into the sensor area.

Repaired three similar solar lights today. All three had smoked the 18650 cell. Turned out no over voltage protection on the charging side of things. Hooked up the multimeter and shone a torch on the panel and it was pumping 5.5 ish volts into the 18650. Replaced the cells with some salvaged from a battery powered vacuum and fitted 1S BMS. They're all working again now and hopefully the BMS will keep the cells healthy. I'm in Thailand, so we get plenty of sun.

Thanks Big Clive... Bought 2 similar ones from Amazon about 3 years ago - cost 22 quid for a pair of them. Put one over front door, and the other on the corner of my house, that switch on when I come home from the pub when it's pitch black - since the council cheapskates now turn all the street lights off at midnight. Still working great, never needed to touch them, once I set the switch on the back. Bought 2 longer style solar lights from B&M made by EVEREADY, I fitted them at the back of the house, and also working great.😁 Before I retired a couple of years ago, I fit loads of these solar lights at work, all over the place too, I was a sparks also, and I couldn't be arsed any more to fit 'real' electric lights.😂

These are ok. The hard wired in battery is my biggest problem as the cheap batteries supplied don’t last long. Nice video. Thanks for sharing Clive.

I’ve had this style light for a few years now the only thing that happened was that battery went bad and when it would turn to full brightness it would cut out and reset. I salvaged a disposable e cig battery and replaced it and working like new with a little more Ah’s. As for water tightness mine was dry inside so it seals well. The back cover isn’t sealed as I had cobwebs in mine but no sign of water. Would recommend this light and if your worried run some sealer around the back cover but leave a gap at the bottom to let any water out. I’ve seen outdoor junction boxes totally filled with water on 240v!

Grant, from my experience there are 2 distinct types of these that I have come across; the ones like the Aldi which have a protection circuit for the 18650 do work for years I have 3 of these on the driveway. However, there are another type (the ones I got had 30 led's not 20) that have no protection for the Liion and, as you say, the 18650's get over charged and then over discharged and I lost 10 of them after 2 months as I didn't think anyone would be stupid enough to design a circuit that would fail! I fixed them by putting the Liion in a holder..just in case and then a 1s BMS diectly across the solar cell and then output from the BMS to the battery terminals on the lamp pcb. So far so good. I have taken the back of them every week or so to check on the Liion cell and they seem in good condition. Why something like this which would cost a less than 1/2 Yuan wasn't added I don't know but.....

More investigation needed..... but glad your solution is working.

I installed 2000Mah in them and put battery posts out the back. During the winter not enough sunlight gets to them. so every 2-3 months I have to pull them off their nail and charge the batteries with the CV/CC power supply set at 4.2V/500ma. They are the 4 led model that turn on low at dusk and then if you walk by they turn super bright for 10 seconds and then go back to dim. The one at the front door I put tape over the sensor because all night the cat walks by and triggers it to bright mode thus running the battery down quicker and creating disturbing light into the bedroom window. 🙂 [I could have added a single cell Micro USB BMS boards and charged them with a cell charger but putting in battery posts was simpler.]

In bright sun the battery had 5.8 volts across it! The charge regulator I.C. was not fitted to the circuit board. Also, the current limiting resistors weren't fitted either. Cost cutting to the point of making something completely useless within months.

I have a similar unit from Wilko. I found another way to hack it. The unit lives in a car port, and doesn't get enough sunlight to keep the battery charged. I tacked on a USB lead, with the positive on the battery side of the switch, and the negative on the ground rail (I used the solar panel's -ve because it was convenient). This allows me to charge the cell up from a USB powerbank, while still using the stock PCB's overvoltage protection. While I was at it, I also replaced the 18650 with a larger capacity one from a Poundland powerbank, to increase the time before I have to charge it.

Great video, mine broke and I was wondering what is wrong with it. I was thinking that the battery probably died or damage from moisture, the led had a lot of water close to it. Worked for a year and then died. Seeing it inside, similar from the outside, different inside, so a different model. Cheaper schematic. Still, want to order another one, really useful.

I have one, it's pretty good - the only thing about it is that the "on" time can't be adjusted - it's just too short. I've not watched the video yet but I'm pretty sure you've covered these before, or similar and the stay on time can't be changed due to the timing being done in a sealed module. I'd also like to put in a bigger capacity battery, anyway about to view your video Clive, cheers:-)

Re: dusk detection - You mention removing the 360K(R2) resistor to keep the unit in "dusk mode". Would it be possible to adjust the "dusk level" via changing it's value; e.g. forcing a light to wait until it's actually closer to proper dark before it comes on? TIA! Love your work!

Sure, make the 360k a lower value would mean it needs less light to keep the voltage at that input to the MCU above the threshold

I bet that regulator is related to some I've recently seen, marked 662K (I think the K is nominally a lot code, but I could buy a bunch with that exact marking on Amazon). Iirc it's much better of an LDO than the usual AMS1117 (which isn't really low drop out by most standards) commonly found on imported hobbyist electronics. I remember being impressed enough with the specs that I bothered buying a bunch, planning to use one to repair a $5 Bluetooth light I had let the magic smoke out of, and the rest for future projects. The bag lives alongside my A2SHB, A5SHB (p fet), J3Y, and AMS1117 collections 😁

I have one of these.The battery died and replaced with a spare mobile phone battery. This is one that has low intensity then when movement is detected it comes on fully. But when its turned on now it comes on low then goes high intensity after a while goes off, but then it never comes on fully again. You have to turn it off and back on again to work.

UV seems to be the down fall for these lights on the glued solar and LED panels as they become unstuck from the main body water ingress is very minimal into the interior. had 10+ along the back garden fence for when the dog is let out last thing at night. and some for anyone walking down to the house from the road in front as there is no street lighting they light a good area and hold a good charge even on dull days

I bought one similar to that at the dollar store. I think it was around $7.00 - $8.00? It's been a couple of years. I wasn't very impressed with the dollar stores version. First off, it's held together with hot glue. When the sun bakes on it, it basically falls apart. Second,.... I was wanting a light that was off when no one was around then came on when someone walked in front of it. That's not how it operated. The light is constantly on low. When motion is detected it jumps too high. There is absolutely safety features inside for the 18650. Is it safe to have a 18650 battery bake in the sun all day charging with no safety features Big Clive ? I have never tried, like I said the thing would fall apart from the Heat. It does have a fairly decent small solar panel on it.

@GGigabiteM
@GGigabiteM 2 года назад
@@jostj1952 These cheap solar cells don't put out a lot of current, charging up a single battery is already a struggle for them, especially since they're not always put in ideal locations and may only see a few hours a day of sunlight. What happens if you put too much capacity via an extra battery, or just a higher capacity cell on the light is that the battery/batteries will never fully charge. So you'll end up with a scenario where over the span of days the battery will have a lower and lower charge to where the light just stops working altogether. At this point, the light will usually stop working, because when the batteries get too low, they try to pull too much current from the solar panel and the voltage drops off to nothing, then the batteries won't charge at all. This happens faster on the versions with the dual intensity mode, where the light is always lit at a low level until the PIR is tripped to make it go full intensity. I have this version of this light and a 2200 mAh battery is all that it can really do with *good* sunlight exposure. I have to move it around multiple times a year as the sun changes angles in the sky to keep it getting a decent amount of sunlight during the day.

I have a bunch of these but mine have modes. they are "OK" but have 2 issues (1 for mine 2 for yours) I don't like the soldered in 18650. makes it hard to replace than it needs to be. mine are socketed so I can just literally stuff another 18650 in their when the first one dies What I don't like is the ENCAPSULATED panel. they are almost never UV stable so eventually its going to die due simply to not being able to charge and you can only sand and polish so many times before you sand through the resin and destroy the cells inside. :-(
