In the first season of Houston Texans football, then-rookie quarterback David Carr took an NFL record 76 sacks. He also set a league record with 12 fumble recoveries. Carr was never able to live up to the hype as the 1st overall pick in the 2002 NFL Draft, despite finishing 5th for the Heisman Trophy. What was he able to achieve with the Texans in their first year as an expansion team? Was Carr really that much of a bust, or did he not have proper pass protection? So, was Carr a major bust, or was he doomed to fail from the beginning? Lemme know your thoughts, shout out ideas for future topics, and don't miss out on more Sudden Death content like... • Bill Romanowski's SHOCKING Career: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qe5zD_15E0I.html • The Greatest Game 7s in Sports (Part 1): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ez6OgXlAh2s.html • The Rollercoaster Career of Gilbert Arenas: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tC5Kf8FrBCo.html Thanks for watching! 😄 - Nick

He wasn’t a terrible quarterback. He had promise for sure.

As a Texans fan Carr had talent there were times he had held on the ball for too long. Which is common for rookies but he didn't really have much to work with.

Good point about holding onto the ball. That was evident to me as well - chances where he could have prolonged the play by rolling outside the pocket first. But then again, I never wanted to play quarterback...I just wanted to be the Andre Johnson 😆

He was doomed from day one. You put the guy in the drivers seat in a massive city that is football crazy, he was placed as the poster child and never even played a single NFL game. He didn’t have an O-line or weapons to throw to. I feel like the Texans put all the pressure on him and he did his best to roll with it, but the organization failed to help him. David Carr to me is a classic “what if” tale. That said at the end of the day he DOES have a ring and able to say he was there…how many can say that?

When the number of times your sacked is higher than your QB rating that’s a bad sign. I actually felt a bit bad for the guy

My teacher today was saying how her son in law got drafted by the Texans as an O-lineman when the team first started. Then I see this video.

That was brutal for Carr…bust,,,NO! He had absolutely no chance to succeed. My friends and I used joke about which lineman’s wife slept with based on who would give up most sacks….Number one pick on an expansion team…his career had absolutely no chance

He should have played without a helmet on, then defenders would be like "I can't hit him, he's gorgeous".

He didn't fail so much as couldn't overcome everything we thought he could but probably wouldn't anyway. He gave it a shot, just didn't work out. Setup to fail? Maybe not having the environment to succeed but no failure

Right on the money! I think this warrants a celebration. Feel free to reach out (see video description), and I'll be happy to mail you your very own Sudden Death Sports t-shirt 👏🎉 (for reference) Charles Cross and Abe Lucas were both rookies last year. Cross was drafted in the 9th round in 2022, as his own free agent, inked his own deal with the Hawks. Lucas missed one game, but in the video, I said "16 games" so you're 100% correct.

If you have a weak offensive line, and no run game, maybe 7 and 9 step drops are a bad idea. Coaching failed Carr.

rookie season: team's fault most of texan's tenure: both their fault. held the ball too often, team picks to surround him were just.... yeah for the most part. honestly carr had a lot of promise and failed to deliver, defense was solid for his tenure mainly near the end of it, but damn the offensive (sans johnson) was basically absent (jacoby jones had some nice games though.) honestly majority of his tenure was pain.

Unfortunately if your grading it on the expectations of a 1st overall pick then yes he is a bust, although that doesn’t necessarily mean it was all on him When you get sacked 76 times over a season ( or 4.75 times on average) then you’ve got a young QB who’s confidence has been completely shattered, so now your tendency is to hold on to the ball which is why I think he fumbled so much Not to mention the less then impressive group of offensive weapons didn’t help. But at the end of the day it’s the QB who’s expected to make it work regardless So I think he was a bust, but not for lack of talent or work ethic but for being in a bad situation
