Check out the Gibson 2018 ES line here: www.sweetwater.com/store/sear... Mitch Gallagher sits down with Dustin Wainscott from Gibson Memphis to learn about the 2018 ES series.
This is why I love Sweetwater. Sweetwater goes out of their way keeping us musicians informed by putting out such great videos like this. Thanks Mitch and Sweetwater!! Because of this video, I just ordered the 2018 Gibson ES-335 Satin in Wine Cherry. Sweetwater as of 8/10/18 has it on sale for a unreal price of $2399!! That is $900 discounted off the list price.
I guess I was expecting a bit more of a discussion regarding the actual components, wood types used, tone. Maybe a few clips of the process showing how they press the tops and sides they spoke about. Or maybe a look inside the facility where the process is done. Something like that. I thought the Gibson rep was a bit glib. I love Gibson guitars, and was hoping for something that was really informative. Not just a lame infomercial about how I can special order a “one off” that I’m sure I can’t afford. C’mon Gibson!
I thought they had closed the Nashville Custom Shop?? So it's still open and doing the high-end stuff? If I recall I've also seen some stuff labelled 'Memphis Custom Shop'...is Mike Volz still with them in Memphis? Hope they get things worked out!
I hope Mike Voltz is still around. He could have given this same exact presentation and he would have made it a thrill to watch. He really conveys his passion for Gibsons.
Gibson was smart in bringing everything into Nashville factory in order to cut down on costs with having two plants. Now with the reconstruction of the company, the quality control has gone up and they are making excellent Gibson guitars again.
They’re the same, Gibson custom reigns supreme simply for the long neck tenon and the true ABR-1 bridge and solid piece bodies. It’s such a simple switch they can offer for their USA production guitars but they won’t to charge the 5k+. A damn shame
I wish he would have talked about the laminates used, wood quality, etc. AND Even though not an ES, I would have loved to have seen the visual aids for a Johnny A, a piece of art for sure. good vid.
the laminates are not a secret, you can find the answers anywhere in the specs and in dozen pr infos. Top and back are made of 3 sheets. maple, poplar, maple. clued together. no mystery about that... the sides are either also laminated in 3 sheets or solid, depends on the model. the bracing ist mainly adirondack as far as I know, linings are mahogany, center block is maple, roasted (baked) maple or mahogany in some models.
I have a 2018 335 Traditional and had a 2016 satin. Well, I sold the satin to make cash for a 2022 Custom Shop Nashville 335 64 and…wjereas is an amazing guitar I found the Memphis standard guitars have something I don’t know what that feels a better built guitar. Don’t get me wrong custom shop os awesome but man you are not getting a worse guitar buying a standard 335
Whomever did the fret work on my 2018 Memphis ES-335 Figured Natural should be fired immediately, or taught how to do it correctly. Ditto for the final inspector, if there was one.
That tiny bit of wood they're taking out of the center block can't be more than three or four ounces of material. Get real. It's a semi-hollow guitar, if it's too heavy for you get a gym membership or be like B.B. King in his later years and play seated.
