When I heard Chicano culture had spread to Japan, I wanted to see it for myself. Who knew the culture I grew up with had a home so far from California? I met with stars Junichi Shimodaira, Mona “Sad Girl” and Night tha Funksta.

Recklessly Arrogant you are correct, we are a trip. I believe it’s due to the “grass is always greener” with us and that’s not always a bad thing. If you think about it in this case the world get a little smaller by appreciating other cultures.

It is funny. Car culture is a great example. Import car guys in the US are always hunting rare JDM (japanese domestic market) parts both OEM & aftermarket that weren't available for sale here. The opposite has become true in Japan, they started importing USDM parts to emulate the style of the American released models! Also a side note but did you know Lexus, Infiniti, and Acura do not exist in Japan. They are Toyota, Nissan, and Honda respectively. They only exist because in the 90s Japanese manufacturers didn't believe they could sell luxury cars under their own marquees here in north America. I've had a few people get outstandingly offended when I told them they're Lexus or Infiniti was actually a rebadged Toyota or Nissan! 🤣

As a Chicano, I think this is nice! I see this more as appreciation than anything else. They have the Mexico flag, so they know, and are aware ,of where this all stemmed from and aren't trying to pass it off as their own like others so blatantly do. Besides, learning about other cultures is a good way to keep your mind open and helps you learn more things.

What makes the Latino and Mexican people so beautiful is that we are not just one color. We are white, we are brown, we're black. We come in all forms and colors unlike any other race on the planet which makes us unique and that's why most Latinos won't hate on other cultures unlike most cultures we know.

Cultural appropriation is such a stupid concept. It would mean ur not allowed to speak English unless ur British. Same for using computers or the s bend toilet.
@imDezrt
@imDezrt 5 лет назад
Certain people will try to stop any cultural interchange from happening because cultural and racial division is how you control populations (people are too busy having petty arguments to focus on the real issues). Therefore, they try to change the optics of appropriation into something 'bad' even though it's just mutual appreciation of different cultures. Appropriation is good, caricature not so much. There's some nuance to it but there's a distinct difference.

@@deadby15 honestly it's only poor people who cry about it. Andrew Shultz gave a small convo about the whole topic of Drake "culture vulturing" and he said that it's only the poor that care about this and that it's just people liking something cause it's popular. As long as they are respectful do what you want.

I was just having this conversation with my 50 year old Mexican dad. He had never heard of cultural appropriation. I explained what it was and gave various examples. He genuinely felt it was just people being interested in a culture and showcasing the tradition. It’s crazy how we say that older generations are more conservative and close minded but in reality it’s us young ones who are easily closed and offended. The older folks are also the ones who actually suffered the discrimination that would lead to the word cultural appropriation so only they have the right.

It’s been really inspiring and hopeful to read the comments on this video. I appreciate so many people are behind this. There’s a lot of people whining and crying about cultural appropriation, and looking for problems when that aren’t there.

I agree! As a Mexican American woman. I can honestly say I'm super flattered! I grew up loving Asian culture especially Japanese culture. I was made fun of、kids bullied me and called me "wanna be Asian". And now I have two Japanese Mexican boys! So I cant wait to show them this amazing celebration of cultures 🌙😍😍 It's hard enough being a Mexican growing up in LA but then you have this amazing mix of cultures. What can be done but just love and respect everyone! Moooore videos like this please. Next will be on AMLW couples😍😁💕💕💕

Lokes This is what Japan does. They take something they think is cool/trendy that they don't really understand and copy it. But its mostly at the superficial level. They don't know why they have the imagery or why chicacos dress that way. They'll put the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe everywhere but wouldn't know what it means. They just put it because it looks cool. That culture they're adapting is never internalized. As a Filipina there is a lot of nuances that I can understand from chicano culture or Mexican culture (mostly because our two countries were tied for hundreds of years by Spain). Did you know that 10% of the Filipino language is Nahuatl? With Japan, there is no internalization. Its merely a copy. Japan is the most homogenous society in the world and these subcultures are a form of rebellion to not blend in with the others.

Jose Dolores how can someone love and truly embrace a culture if a person doesn’t even know the history of a culture? Do they known the true meaning of a Xicano? Do they know this was all started as political activism? Do they know who Corky Gonzales, Cesar Chaves and Dr. Hector P. Garcia were? Yes it’s copying of a culture and I don’t have any issues with it and it’s cool but they will never understand what it is to be Xicano.

@@victorsr6708 well, your asking me questions that should be directed at someone else. when i was growing up Chicano was spelled the way it is read. you can understand something and not be or go through it. i understand the civil rights movement yet i was not alive nor did i go through it. My opinion stated that they did nothing wrong nor did they copy.

you dont have to be Mexican american to understand a culture and embrace and respect a style, a movement, an idea that becomes as strong as a revolution. Revolution begins in the mind. My previous opinion about them stands. You have questions i cannot answer.

Jose Dolores my statements were thought provoking meaning in today’s day and age all you would have to do would be to google the names and find out what actually happened historically. If you are too lazy to educate yourself Jose then what does that say about you?

It makes sense to me because of how much so many people love Japanese culture in Mexico as well. Especially with shows like DBZ. so it makes sense that there's people in Japan who have great appreciation the other way.
