Inside Japan's WORST Hotel Room | Feat.  

NOTIFICATION SQUAD: Come on guys, don't deny it. 12:35 is literally Connor in scarecrow form. Sorry for the delay in this episode! Both Connor and I have have been moving around these last few weeks (Connor and apartment, me a studio). Notice how both of their plans to annoy one another ended up backfiring. Connor somewhat enjoys the adrenaline rush from crossing the bridge meanwhile Chris is battered and drenched. Then, Chris got some enjoyment out of the hotel seeing Connor's suffering more than him, even though he was supposed to be the victim.

Legitimately crying laughing at Connor trying to convince you to leave a situation he created.

Fun fact: James May visited the scarecrow village as well, back in 2019 for his travel documentary. He had the chance to speak with the Ayano-san about her scarecrows and she made James May scarecrow for him. You can vaguely see it at 10:07 on the right side of the gym and the far right of the shot; it is wearing a blue shirt, has blond hair and is situated behind the outstretched hand.

That hotel room was giving me all sorts of anxiety attacks. That pillow you laid your head on had blood on it. I wouldn't be surprised if that ammonia smell was their failing attempt to prevent black mold. The walls are falling apart before your eyes. I'm surprised that you only found a dead fly. I expected you to pull back the bedding and find a horror movie of insects and body fluids that would make a criminal pathologist vomit. My sister once booked a room that just had bed bugs. I thought it couldn't be worse than that. Playing "Guess the Stain" wins the trauma award.

ONE PERSON MADE ALL OF THESE DOLLS?!?!? That is an insane effort! Even just the amount within the school is like a lifetimes work but there's an entire village. It's amazing honestly.

Full confession: I rewatch Chris's videos A LOT. I love the discovery and exploration of them on the first go, but they're jampacked with so many different things and jokes that it makes them super rewatchable with so many different facets to each video, but also surprisingly comforting and relaxing. I often find that my RU-vid algorithm brings me back down an Abroad in Japan rabbit hole that I'm pretty much always down for. All this is to say, I've rewatched this video many times, but I always forget that the worst hotel room has this amazing visit to the scarecrow village embedded in it, and I get this epic wave of warm melancholy, almost nostalgia, when that music comes up and we enter the scarecrow village. Chris has endlessly great editing, but this is one of the segments where I feel Chris's sensibilities really shine: Connor is stating how sad the whole situation is, almost afraid, it could have been edited like a horror movie; instead, Chris turns to this soft, melancholic tone that is also bright and hopeful, turning it into this gorgeous moment of seeing the loss of the village through so many different lenses at once, while still having this bumbling Welshman make jokes throughout. I just love it.

The staff was probably so nice because they didn't have to do the other tedious parts to their job, such as cleaning the rooms. 😂

I swear both your accents really intensify when you’re left alone in the same room. The British-ness is really feeding off one another, in the best way possible!

I find absolutely charming how Chris can be snarky and outspoken on youtube in front of more than 2 million people, but he can't look the hotel lady in the eye and tell her he's leaving xD

Somehow the funniest thing I took from this was the staff being "mildly angry" at you for trying to check in after midnight. I felt that.

im still confused how so many attractions are just open and free to enter. and nobody destroys it. no vandals. this are the moments i think japan seems so peaceful.

Chris generally gives off this lazy, cranky, mendokusai mood until you realize he's done some of the scariest and most bizarre stuff in Japan- freezing on mount Fuji, flying over a volcano in a cessna, crossing the Indiana Jones bridge during a typhoon and this hotel.. I am genuinely impressed as heck! The hotel was probably the most life threatening experience out of them all..

I totally understand being in a house full of mold the air feels sickening and if you can deal with that it makes you more tired overall as your body works to fight against the horrible air. At least that how I felt when being in a moldy room for hours. But these two guys are great to watch.

The fact this hotel still managed to get 5/10 astounds me

I love finding really cheap hotels in Japan, though I tend to look for a bit higher rating. Found a place in Osaka that's about $17 a night and is pretty amazing. Definitely staying there any time I'm in the city overnight. Also, just so you know, that's definitely not blood on the walls. If I had to guess, it's the leftover tar from cigarettes.

The Japanese government has a crisis task force working around the clock to clean up that hotel room.

Not gonna lie, I really expected Connor to suddenly fess up and say that he was messing with Chris and actually booked another hotel and never intended to stay the night but the dude was so convinced he could live through it and didn't make a plan B. The funniest part is that Connor was the one pushing that they leave. Chris was 100% willing to stay the night if not for the hepatitis bed.

that village full of scarecrows was heartbreaking. it's like the spirits of the of the people who used to live there are given form, especially since some of them are actually based on past villagers.

I will now only ever describe Chris as being "built like a bag of milk" 😂

Mold is no joke. My brother and I lived in a house for three years without knowing about the mild mold problem, and a year later we’re still recovering from the awful effects it has had on our bodies (like, we couldn’t figure out what was wrong with us for the longest time, and only like the tenth doctor figured it out)

Had to appreciate Chris’s use of happy, yet almost childish-imaginative song then shifted to a sad one that really highlights the underlying issue of the scarecrow town. Kudos!

Wow one of my favorite videos and places you've visited yet! Obviously the duo of Chris and Connor is hilarity and chaos manifested. But the village and the scarecrows were genuinely so beautiful. I think if I were there I'd be a little creeped out for sure, but seeing it in your video with the editing/music, the atmospheric rain and gloom, something really despondent and emotional about it, like a kind of empty feeling in your chest, nostalgia for something you've never experienced but still feel. Awesome video

I have to say, I really liked the fact that you guys didn't spend the whole time finding the scarecrows creepy, and talked a bit about their reasoning and the issues with depopulation. It is (as Connor put it) sad. each piece is clearly a labour of love and a show of what once was, and it's hauntingly interesting but also a bit of a somber sight.

The music is perfectly fitting during the scarecrow segment - the sadness of a town that is no longer thriving, but filled with what could be, really gut-punched me.

These madlads actually payed 60 bucks for a genuine Silent Hill 4: The Room experience and turned it into content

This looks like a hotel where people go to get things done. Not to have fun. Not to relax. Not even to spend the night before the plane leaves. But a hotel meant for illicit business, “sending messages”, making deals, and cleaning up loose ends.

I love these two. They make such a great combo. They make me laugh so hard.

I think I understand Connor's feelings towards the village with the scarecrows. It's sad to think about how as we migrate into cities, and even internationally, these small communities and towns with their craftsmanship, stories and memories are just lost to the wider world. They only live on through the few who share them or those who like Chris and Connor happen to stumble across it. While the scarecrows are somewhat scary, they're a reminder that the town used to have a very real, thriving community. Thanks for sharing it!

The music used in the scarecrow village was... It's a very specific emotion to me. It's melancholic, but it also instills a sense of fear in me. The music feels like it mixes both of those emotions into one and it makes the hair on the back of my neck stands up. I get goosebumps listening to it. The melody just goes up a bit too high, like elated, while the chords are so sad. It's like a person laughing unsettlingly loud and happily at a funeral. I really like it but I also kinda don't wanna hear it. It makes me feel unsettled.

The music selection for this episode is brilliant!

The marks on the walls are probably what happens when a room that smells strongly of cigarette smoke gets damp and the nicotine runs down the wall. Those walls have not been cleaned in years.

First off, what a great video and congrats to 9 years on YT! I hate to bring down the room, but I'm thankful you guys didn't stay in that hotel. If you ever go to a hotel/resort that has mold problems or heavy smelling air, get out immediately.....there are so many real risks. We actually recently had two owners of a large vacation rental company in our town pass away while on vacation at one of their own resorts where someone hadn't properly installed carbon monoxide sensors. They started feeling naseous, but just knocked it off as some light travel sickness. After a few days they went to a hospital and the hospital said everything checked out fine. They went back to the hotel, and tragically were found a few days later....no longer living. I know mold/smoke are vastly different than carbon monoxide, but those signs of nausea due to smell are good indicators that your body needs you to move location!

You boys were hilarious. As someone with extreme allergies I have no problem refusing a hotel room within minutes or even an hour of entering it for any reason. * Especially* scents as that can put me in the hospital post haste. 😅 Nothing embarrassing about saying a room isn’t up to health standards. Most places are pretty cool about it.

Leaving was probably the wise choice. Mold can make some people sicker than others, and it is quite drastic varying person to person. Some people will be sick almost immediately, others can handle it for months/years. Connor did right leaving, if he's mold-sensitive it can make you extremely ill.

I'm gonna be honest, "Blood stained hepatitis bed" would make a great name for a grindcore band.

It would have been brilliant if they had a black light with them to shine on the bedding and walls. I suspect they wouldn't have needed the incandescent room lights to illuminate the room. The glow from the various bodily fluids on the walls and bedding would be sufficient.

as hilarious as this duo are, the shots in Chris's videos of the places they visit are always breathtaking

Not gonna lie, a huge typhoon, a dangerous bridge, a creepy town with more scarecrows than humans and finally a moldy and bloody hotel room where you might not wake up sounds like a pretty cool start for a horror movie. Or a Call of Cthulhu campaign.

I love rewatching these wacky weekend videos just for these zany little bursts of escapism. Even though we can't visit yet, they've really helped give the feeling of doing weird shit with your mates on holiday. I cannot describe the feeling I get from this nagoro village. That's quite something ... I never had this kind of ambivalent feeling of sadness and creepiness before. The effort of woman who created all this scarecrows... just wow

Jesus... I'm not sure if it's because they were tired, but, I'm pretty sure that hotel room was making both Connor and Chris' eyes bloodshot. In another note we need more of this cynical, sarcastic and dry commentary by these two lads. Perhaps the only thing at the moment that makes me proud to be a Brit.
