The Rab Electron Pro jacket is a mid-weight, technical down jacket with a highly water-resistant fabric making it perfect as an outer jacket for cold, wet and generally miserable winter conditions. Because of its excellent pack size, it also works superbly as an over-layering jacket to keep in your pack. Simply whip it out when you need to chuck it over the top of all your layers to provide warmth on those exposed belays, or when stopping for lunch on winter outings. As well as all that technical stuff The Electron Pro is also pretty much the perfect winter coat for everyday use.

It's worth noting that the new version of the Electron pro is sized smaller than the one tested here, it's a lot neater around the body and shoulders. I own the old version size L and love it but sadly had to return the new version. If it helps I'm 6ft tall with a 34" waist and 42" chest. Tried the XL but it was too big.

My first ever down jacket. Bought it yesterday, I'm not a massive outdoor enthusiast but needed something warm for dog walks, school run and general day today without having to layer up heavily. Been out in the Electron Pro all day today in windy damp conditions about 4-5 degrees with a t shirt under. Never felt cold, its completely windproof and the water resistance seems top notch. So impressed already. I'm 6"1", 11.4 stone, 30inch waist and went for medium as small was a little too snug

I definitely recommend sizing up with this garment if you want to wear anything more than a tee. I normally wear Medium and ordered this in the Large. The arm pits are cut high and it does fit on the slim side on the body. For reference, I am 5’8/170 with an athletic build. Arm length is not excessive for me.

In your opinion which would be the best option between this and the ME Senja, specifically for warmth. I see the Rab uses goose rather than duck and is of higher quality (800 v 700 fill) however the ME uses more in weight so I'm a little confused. I Like the Senja's better durability and I'm aware the Rab is more technical but I'm planning on mostly using this jacket for walking the dog / to the pub in the coldest winter conditions. Should I be looking at an even warmer jacket than these two? I like the ME Lightline however feel it might be a little too warm and get limited outings.
@trekitt
@trekitt 3 года назад
The Senja is marginally warmer, but realistically both are more than warm enough for UK conditions while dog walking/pub-going. I've owned an Electron and found it an ideal weight for less strenuous activities during winter. Regards, Harry.

Hey @Trekitt ! 🤗 A while ago, i saw your review of the FJÄLLRÄVEN KEB TOURING DOWN jacket and I´m wondering how the RAB ELECTRON PRO compares to the FR. By the way: I really value your reviews a lot, thank you very much for your efforts here!
@trekitt
@trekitt 3 года назад
Hey @Makossa The Electron Pro jacket, on paper, is slightly the warmer of the two jackets, and is also the more weather resistant thanks to the Quantum Pro outer fabric. The Keb Touring Down jacket is the more breathable and better suited to dry cold conditions. So, it all depends on where and when you intend to use your jacket. I hope that helps. Paul.

I'm trying to decide between this and the thorium AR as a winter overlayer. How would you The winters here in Michigan are all over the place, so it's be nice if it can work from ~0C + ☔ down to -20C w/ windchill (adding midlayers on the way). Is the Electron pro more versatile?
@trekitt
@trekitt 3 года назад
Hi, thanks for your comments. The Thorium and the Electron are both very similar in terms of warmth, but the Electron wins on weather resistance thanks to that Pertex Pro coated fabric, making it the more versatile option. I hope that helps. Paul.

Thanks for the review, how does this jacket compare against the Arcteryx Thorium AR, Atom AR or Cerium LT? Which is best for a jacket for hiking or around a campfire out in winter, 6 - (-10) degrees Celsius
@trekitt
@trekitt 3 года назад
Hi, the Electron Pro is comparable to a Thorium AR in terms of insulation, however it is far more weather resistant thanks to the Pertex Quantum Pro face fabric. The "best" jacket for your use is the one that fits you the best and suits the conditions. If your normal weather is damp/wet, a synthetically insulated jacket (Atom AR) would be a good choice. I hope that helps. Paul.

The Haglofs V Series will cope with our usually soggy UK weather thanks to its synthetic filling. Warmth wise, the Electron just edges ahead, but the down filling will suffer if it gets wet. Thanks for watching. Paul.

@trekitt
@trekitt 3 года назад
Both great jackets, it just depends how warm you need to be! Both use a similar quality of down, but the Neutrino uses more of it. If it's just for static use, I'd lean towards the Neutrino as it's a looser cut, so you'll be able to fit it over your other layers more comfortably. Kind regards, Harry.

Just coming back to this great review for some advice please! When comparing warmth between the Rab Valiance Jacket and Electron Pro, how do they compare? and Although the Valiance has less fill weight, does the Pertex Shield make it warmer? (by blocking cold air etc). Thank you in advance!
@trekitt
@trekitt 2 года назад
They're both very similar warmth wise, however the Electron is best suited for active use in dry, cold conditions and the Valiance is better for low-intensity activities in all weather conditions. The deciding factor is where, and what, you plan to use the jacket for. Harry
@johnanderson7470
@johnanderson7470 2 года назад

@faraazhamza6044
@faraazhamza6044 Год назад

Hello! I was wondering if you had a chance to try and fit a shell over this jacket? I’m considering grabbing it for southern Ontario Canada winter, but unsure if it will fit under my Beta AR (arc) for the super windy or snowy days
@trekitt
@trekitt 6 месяцев назад
The Electron will fit under a shell, but is somewhat dependent on the fit of your shell. If you have a little room underneath when wearing your Beta with just a baselayer/midlayer, you should be good to go. If it's a little tight you will reduce the efficiency of the insulation, but you will have some additional warmth from the shell blocking out more of the elements.

This way, people would see whether a given garment fits their or similar figure. Makes sense? Then do it, man!

Hi No Names, I'm not sure I understand the question - the 'clothing review windows' bit is throwing me off! If you're looking for Paul's measurements and the size of the garment, there's a list of chapters in the description which allow you to skip to relevant points in the video. 10:42 is 'how does it fit' and includes the size of the garment, which layers Paul has underneath, his height, his weight, his chest size and his waist size. My one gripe is the weight: for a down jacket it’s quite heavy. I think they should have used the 1000FP down they use in some of their sleeping badges to keep that weight to a minimum. Edit: ok one more gripe, not sure why rab and montane put the suede “beard guard” on these, the low-friction, soft nylon feels much nicer against the skin (the reason why market leaders like Arcteryx and Montbell don’t use them)
@trekitt
@trekitt 3 месяца назад
We wouldn't say the Electron is by any means a heavy down jacket, for it's warmth its in a similar spot to a lot of Rab's competitors. Rab do however make a jacket that might be more suitable for your requirements, the Mythic G: www.trekitt.co.uk/outdoor-jackets/insulated-jackets/rab-mens-mythic-g-jacket-black__52838 It uses 1000fp down and comes in at 277g for a size medium. The fleece-lined chin guard is a choice made by a lot of brands from a comfort point of view, but also to help manage moisture a little better. But it's definitely a personal preference thing, when Ben has just stubble he does also find them a little annoying.
