Update: I'm still using this jacket 3.5 years later! It has a few patches on it now, it's not quite as lofty as it was here, but still holding up great. I'm planning to use it aggressively for at least one more season for alpine trad climbing, mountaineering, backpacking, ice climbing belaying, and whatever other occasions arise. I may consider replacing this jacket after this season, but unless something drastically changes, I plan to replace it with the exact same one. @RabEquipment, if you want to give me a discount, I'm your gal ;) I've used this as my outermost layer to climb most of the volcanoes in Washington state including a VERY windy day atop Mount Tahoma (Mt. Rainier, 14k ft, ~35-40 mph winds). As a budding technical climber, I've found the stuff sack to be handy when I'm alpine climbing and it's very cold, as I can keep the jacket on my harness at easy reach (though it's not the most durable fabric so I have to be careful of sharp rock). I've worn this down to 11 degrees F in dry conditions with high quality base layers and many many layers of gloves, though I don't know if I'd want to test this jacket for a wet 11 degrees. It's easy to patch if you rip the material (not easy to rip, but sometimes you carry pointy things and they snag!) to extend the life of the gear. This jacket is This is a UK 10/US Small/JP 11. I'm 5'5" and 125lbs. I usually (depends on the activity of course) pair this with a sun hoody (or a merino wool base layer if I'm not climbing/mountaineering), the Arcteryx Atom LT, sometimes also the Arcteryx Proton LT OR the Montbell Plasma 1000 Alpine Down Parka Men's (pro tip - if you happen to be in Japan, buy Montbell producs there! The exchange rate makes all the prices around 60% of the price if you buy it in the US.) (Pro tip #2 - the men's Montbell jacket has a much better warmth-to-weight ratio women's, and more down fill overall. if you're a little flatter like me and don't mind slightly more masculine cuts, I'd go for that version).

I've watched (so far) three of your videos. I really appreciate a smart small women reviewing quality gear. I won't go into how the reviews on YT tend to be fashion focused for women, quality for men (in general) but wanted to say thanks. Really gives me a good idea on how it will fit and feel and you cover all the specs so brilliantly. Appreciated. (liked and subscribed).

It's unfortunate that there isn't any review of this jacket on RU-vid. I've been at summits with this jacket over a base layer and the Arct'eryx Proton in -25c and -33c. It's solid. Long sleeves, long hem, adjustable hood. Most of the jacket is box baffle, so there's almost no cold spot. It's a relaxed fit around the chest, and not much extra around the waist. Lots of pockets, two chest pockets, one on the outside and one on the inside. Double zipper for belaying. If I have to complain about something, I would say they could use 850 fill power instead of the 800. Thanks for your review, I hoped I add some value for people looking for details on the men's version.

The colour of it looks lovely on you. I like it fastened right up. I was wondering whether it rustles when you move about as I myself love that sound.it looks as if it keeps the elements out. I wonder if there is one that is the same colour but has a detachable hood as ite easier to fasten up withoutnhaving to undo it to have it snugly round thr neck. You have convinced me to have one and I'll get folk to see it on RU-vid and subscribe. You were excellent describing what it does. All thats left is to obtain one.
@happyhafuhiker2046
@happyhafuhiker2046 3 года назад
Hi Nick! Thanks for watching this video too! I really appreciate your support and friendliness :) The fabric isn't too crinkly (like some of the super lightweight fabrics) but does make the typical down jacket 'rustling' sound if you're moving your arms a lot as you walk. I don't notice it much, but hopefully the sound meets what you like! I haven't seen one with a detachable hood so far, but maybe if you leave feedback to Rab they'll take note!

@@happyhafuhiker2046 Oh l'm so touched and moved about the comment. You've been so helpful and kind and when you mentioned about the rustling sound that has made me decided to get one as I have had jackets that make that sound and that's the icing on the cake along with the snug fit and I love that blue colour. I also know it will keep the wind out as I feel the cold. You explained so well and made it so easy going. You're an angel.

Hi there HHH I've bought the jacket on your recommendation and it's awesome thanks! I'm like you feel the cold in every bone in my body! But this jacket is next level warm!!! 👌 only thing is I can't get the hood drawstrings to stay tight as there ain't no buttons to press to keep the strings in place like there are on the bottom of jacket have you got any idea how the hood stays tight or do you have to adjust it every time? Thanks iain

@happyhafuhiker2046 Год назад
Hi Sykomatic! I'm so glad you found this helpful :) I'm still loving this jacket 2.5 years later! My jacket model might be significantly older than yours, but it has these circular tabs at the base of the cords that come out near your collar bone. Those hold my adjustments in place, and then I squeeze them to loosen again. I hope it hasn't changed too much in newer models of the jacket!

Does the jacket flatten out about after some use? I am quite a stocky build and love the feel of the jacket but looks really bulky on me. P s I do realise this isn't a fashion jacket!
@happyhafuhiker2046
@happyhafuhiker2046 3 года назад
Hi! Thanks for watching. No, it doesn't flatten out - that's would defeat the purpose! I think perhaps if you didn't care for it well or kept it in the stuff sack, etc. it might flatten out...but remember that the warmth comes from the loft! If you flatten it, it will not insulate your body heat as well. P.S. I bet you look awesome in it!! Outdoor fashion is a whole other world :) People probably look at you, admire your jacket, think about the cool ways you adventure in such a cold weather jacket, and don't even notice the bulk!

Hi there, thanks for your video. Did you try the Neutrino Pro at all? I am trying to decide between the two jackets. I will be doing a 6000m expedition in Ecuador and I run cold typically but also don't want to overheat... What kinds of expeditions have you used the jacket for? And to what temperature?
@happyhafuhiker2046
@happyhafuhiker2046 Год назад
Hi Lynnette! Sorry for my delay here - which jacket did you end up going with?? I've used this from cold car camping (lowest exertion, lots of sitting) down to around 11F and I was fine. I've also used this in high alpine environments and high winds on volcano ridgelines (I used this for most of the volcanoes in WA) with base layers. I still love this jacket! it definitely starts to feel too warm for me around 30F.

@@happyhafuhiker2046 hi again, I ended up going with the Positron as most people recommended it would also work for future expeditions (I.e. if I end up going to Aconcagua, Denali or Meru & Island Peak in the future). I tried it out in Canada and it is quite warm. I'm sure the Neutrino might have been ok with proper layering but the Positron has the box-stitch and Neutrino has stitch through, which I've heard makes a difference. I can let you know after our Ecuador Chimborazo expedition;)

Hi Brittany! Thanks for watching my video, and so sorry I didn't respond earlier! I'm sure this is too late to be helpful, but for others potentially reading, I ended up taking this to Hyalite Canyon in Montana where it dropped to a very dry 11 degrees. It was fairly windy at times depending on where we were climbing. It kept me warm with a Patagonia Capilene Air base layer, an ultralight grid fleece (Superior Fleece, I LOVE this jacket!!!), and on and off with my EB MicroTherm 1000 jacket. I will say that it held up better than the puffy demo gear people were using :)

Hi Marisa! Thanks for watching my video :) I LOVE this jacket. I am 5'5", about 125lbs, and very flat. The small fits perfect! Hi Zniber! Thanks for watching. The coldest I've taken this was to a snowy, dry, and very windy 28F with a Patagonia R1 crewneck baselayer and a Patagonia Better Sweater quarter zip underneath. I was toasty and kept it a quarter zipped open! Here I was just sitting outside with no additional generation of heat from movement. In a warmer but less pleasant climate, I also took this through 34F heavy sleet and with just a merino wool 250 base layer while setting up a tent (moving quickly, generating my own heat) and again, I was very warm. But perhaps more important to note is that while it was VERY wet outside, and I thought my jacket was toast, the water didn't penetrate the jacket, and I used it as a blanket in my tent overnight where it continued to be a source of excellent warmth, even while wet on the top layer. It dried off overnight. I hope this is helpful!
