The explanation of why the director use the system KFM fight scenes in the film Batman:: “It’s a fascinating fighting method,” says Bale, “because it uses the adrenaline that everyone feels entering into a threatening or violent situation. It really comes from the gut. Rather than the kind of Zen calm that some martial arts call on, KFM is based on animal instinct and honing those instincts to be lethal, so it’s perfect for Batman.”

Ya thanks for paying attention. I have looked into this art more and taken a few classes and talked with some instructors and found that in a street fight it is great as it closed the distance and kept a solid defense. For MMA however it needs to be modified. Having the hands up will leave your body and legs open and leave you vulnerable for takedowns. The tight formation is good for ground and pound and defending head attacks. Tito even used something very similar.

To Lennie: I agree with you about this method being a secondary style. It could fit well with other fighting methods.

I like the emphasis in this system on protecting the head. That's one thing that is so critical especially when there are multiple attackers, or if you get knocked down on the ground. Would work well in combo with other martial art systems.

I studied this art some years ago. I realized after several months of training that i would not feel safe at all using this in a street fight or any fight. Using both arms to cover your head from a punch? Blocks your vision so your opponent can do anything to you. I suppose if you are the highest level of kfm you would be ok but i don't want to wait YEARS tobe able to defend myself in a fight

i love hearing ppl say that things are dumb and wont wrk when they dont actually know what it is or researched it alot....i dont doubt anything that is taught to a countries special forces team. this is taught to british SAS arguably one of the best in the world...sounds to me like it wrks pretty well. keysi wasnt designed to put on a show and get as many points as you can, it was designed to keep you alive in a fight for your life.

I don't know much about KFM but I think it was made primary for street protection. Keysi (the inventor of it) was raised in slums so he developed a method of self-protection. That's why he's primary protecting his head. I mean, you must be 0% lucky to get a tae-kwon-do champion in a streetfight, so he'll be kicking you all over your body. It's also effective in fighting many opponents at once, that's why Nolan took it for Batman movies! :D

@igorstorski the fixed pensador is the basic move. As you get more into the program, u'll learn never stop to move ur arms as it helps to provide better protection. Check 2.05, he keeps swinging his elbows to defend himself and look for opportunity to counter attack.

I had a fight the other night with someone in my town who was having a bad day. He looked at me in the parking lot and said "you got a problem". I am 50 years old and a martial artist. I did not want to fight. I told him to pick on someone else and he started walking towards me very fast with both hands up. I circled him then blasted him with a palm strike to his chest and left the scene. Felt bad about it but I will not let anyone hit me.

Muay Thai Has a spiritual aspect to it just as most Eastern Arts, for example, the ram muay acts as a warm up and a way to ask Buddha for protection. The spiritual aspect is found all over the world in many forms, In the west it takes the form of a prayer before the fight or even a pep talk, In the east it takes the form of prayer or paying homage to ancestors and respecting the dojo or art. The east just puts much more emphasis on it but it more to do with culture than on the fight itself.

I will say Keysi is a brawler's fighting style but nonetheless it's more practical than MMA not saying MMA is bad or anything but Keysi was designed to keep yourself alive in a dirty fight.

just because you train in something doesnt mean your going to use it in a real fight. when you get attacked you wont really be thinking "ok im going to go at his legs this way and then get an arm bar then snap his arm" when you get attacked youre mostly going to be on defense and throw an occasional punch until you see a window and know that you can take down the enemy. now if you are anticipating the fight your head will be more focused unless you just get stomped
@Delta3angle

My arguement was that Eastern Martial arts are more systematic and cover not only fighting but at the same time spiritual and mental aspects while western MA focus on conditioning, dedication, and power without putting heavy emphasis on the spiritual or mental aspects of the sport. I highly respect western MA but I also have the same respect for Eastern and having trained both disciplines I know that they have different focuses. i am not saying that any is more effective than the other however.
@matthaeus17

The creator of this defense system, Justo Dieguez Serrano, has been in many street brawls. Krav maga is excellent, but in many parts of the world is being taught badly. A major problem is that some places only train the techniques without combat simulation. You die if you train this way.
@ETERNALCYCLES

i am not making fun of this style, I use some of these techniques in my style of martial arts, I come from a jujutsu background (gerrman jujutsu) and also using the blanket term taijutsu have developed a fighting style with the best aspects of most martial arts to form a hybrid for street self defense.

I really wish people would stop all this childish "xxxx isn't as good as xxxx" and "wouldn't work in an MMA ring" crap. First of all, MMA just means a mix of styles and it draws heavily from traditional martial arts. People seem to hate on traditional martial arts because they require years of investment and people are lazy. MMA bouts are artificial because they're one-on-one and they know who they're fighting in advance which I doubt happens in "real fights".

In keysi you train every technique on several levels from standing through to on your back there is lots of ground word body defence the vids on yt are a good indication of the intent but not the style I would love some of you to take a class and come back and comment

Agreed, the techniques demonstrated in the video are very effective for striking with an untrained attacker. I do understand that this art was developed with street fighting in mind and I would like to see more groundwork. I do however respect your art and encourage you to continue training so that your art may evolve and continue to improve:)

@matthaeus17 as you said "The keysi method was not really madeto handle knives". So I am not wrong. It looks good anyway, I do use similar techniques in close quarter, when no weapon is to be used. Good luck in your training.

In this documentary "Inside Martial Arts", KFM had a terrible demonstration. So I sent this other video. Krav maga is more complete for various situations, but takes longer to be trained. Already KFM can learn the basics (and efficient) self defense in a street fight in less time.

Keysi Fighting Method isn't a martial art. It's a self defense system for street braw.
@Comicbookguy78
@Comicbookguy78 11 лет назад
It seems to me that the main difference between styles is the psychology behind the training. Muay Thai/MMA/Krav Maga/Keysi/boxing appear effective because the training heavily relies upon physical conditioning and sparring/pad work but never forget that these newer systems take their techniques from traditional martial arts so the idea that traditional martial arts are impractical is plain stupid. The difference is training and the person (some people are good fighters regardless of style)

The practitioners of "jiu jitsu" has much discipline and avoid street fights. In Brazil, a street fight has no honor. 95% Guys who fight walk in groups. If you fight and end up in the ground, 2 guys come to kick you. There are a case that showed on television where a great practitioner of jiu jitsu responded to a burglary and the burglar immobilized. But the accomplice was hiding, approached and shot him at close range.

Overated but extremely effective. And Wrestling, boxing, and kickboxing(Savate)are all western martial arts Which I have mentioned Eastern Martial arts are so popular because of the focus on mental spiritual and physical aspects that are not found in western martial arts Western martial arts are also not generally as organized or structured as eastern martial arts Take for example Historical European Fencing, Structured but not as intricate or mentally tasking as kenjitsu (Samurai swordsmanship)

And seriously if you don't know what you are talking about then don't say anything Mr. Keyboard samurai. These techniques may save you against untrained attackers or those who are not naturally adept at fighting but against anybody with minimal training or have been in enough fights to know what they are doing will exploit the holes in KFM. Experience... Brown belt BJJ, 3 years muay thai, wrestling 5 years, and multiple street fights.

@arimanaz You are wrong. Do not judge the keysi fighting method for a video demonstration. You need to see the training. And with the keysi, we fight against two opponents easily. The keysi method was not really made to handle knives. For this, go go after this self-defense systems such as Krav Maga.
@Delta3angle
@Delta3angle 12 лет назад
Great until you dont have access to a stick or someone tackles you or you get overwhelmed by multiple attackers or even get the stick taken from you. BTW from numerous street fights I know that getting hit with a stick doesn't hurt too much if you can close the distance or even stay out of range and grab hold of the stick. And how does kickboxing force you to stay on the ground? How is the ground a weak spot against 1 guy?
@Delta3angle
@Delta3angle 12 лет назад
The wide stance is also very susceptible to leg kicks which hurt like a B*tch and take away the ability to put weight on the leg. Their hands are also practically glued to their head making takedown defense very tough as you need hands to stop a shot. Blocking body shots plausible and probably practiced but is not shown extensively in this video. BTW have you ever been in a real fight (ring or street) because if you have you know that a grappler is best 1 on 1 but striking is best for multiple.

I saw the video you sent me watched it 15 times disected it and came to the conclusion that the way its being taught in your video is more effective than the one in which you commented on. The rolling away from being attacked was interesting but it still uses way to much energy and movement to be as effective as krav maga.Major problem is im not seeing sparing for me to properly evaluate. Another problem is people dont stand stil, even drunk dumbasses which I seem to attract fail around and move

Clearly you can't test a self defense system against MMA. MMA has rules, street fighting does not have rules. This is the same reason as to why they couldn't conduct a serious test of Krav Maga in an MMA ring, if they fought like normal it would cause serious injury AND go against MMA rules.

All those self defense styles fall to pieces when it really happens, kind of like KFM with the two founders. Andy understands the value of MMA and the intense training it involves. Is it really applicable to the streets? I went to my first Keysi class last week and I really enjoyed it, I particularly liked the drills, sparing and visualisation technique at the end. Its to early to judge the system but some of the things I see on youtube make me cringe if I'm being honest. I will go back and make my mind up after 3 months going twice a week. A fair point, but search RU-vid. How many of the meatheads and drunk louts starting fights are going for the groin, or grappling? Very few. Theycharge and throw haymakers at your dome. I assume you've been trained, so weren't you taught proper moral conduct regarding the use of what you learned? Most trained martial artists don't go around fucking with people? It's not end-all art, but some of these techniques would seem to be very useful in a close-quarters confrontation.
