Inside Story was a part of the TV news program "Entertainment Tonight" from the 1980s and during this time was hosted by Mary Hart. This particular special featured the news on the death of Lucille Ball and highlighted her life and career. For more information on Lucille Ball, visit Everything Lucy at everythinglucy....
A two-part look at medically why Lucy died: On April 18, 1989, Lucy started experiencing severe chest pains in the morning. Gary rushed her to Cedars-Sinai where physicians performed tests and diagnosed an “aortic dissection”. In this condition, the wall of the aorta tears, allowing blood to flow into passages between 3 layers of the blood vessel’s walls. Eventually, her whole aorta was dissected from her heart into the abdomen. By 2pm Lucy was rushed into emergency surgery that lasted 6 ½ hours, where a 5-inch segment of the first part of the aorta was replaced with that from a donor. This was to prevent bleeding or a heart attack and give the walls time to heal. Given her age this was as long as they felt comfortable keeping her under and in the future could have gone in and made repairs. For the next week Lucy seemed to be progressing well, “she was sitting, eating, and even getting to walk a bit.”
On April 26, 1989, Lucy woke up in the early morning hours complaining of back pain and lost consciousness. Within minutes her heart stopped beating. The heart monitors and her private duty nurse recognized something catastrophic was happening. Physicians and nurses worked for 47 minutes trying to revive her but sadly Lucy was pronounced dead at 5:47am. “She basically had no more blood to pump around. Even if she had been in the operating room when it occurred, we would not have been able to save her.” Essentially what happened was that she had another rupture in a different area and this one blew like a frayed garden hose. There was no way they could have repaired or attached it.

My Norwegian grandmother was a stewardess for American Airlines and she had Lucille Ball on one of her flights. She said she was so down to earth and helpful. At lunchtime another passengers baby was very colicky and disturbing others trying to partake in a relaxing meal. Lucille stepped up to the plate and offered to hold the babe. She soothed the little darling to slumberland. I always remember this sweet act of kindness told to me as a child. Not only do I admire her acting abilities but her humble heart for others has inspired me to the core. I will always love Lucy madly.

As a child my mom had a lady friend who was from Jamestown N.Y. her name was Ida Davis, and as a child herself, Lucy was her baby sitter, Ida even showed me a photograph of Lucy holding her in Lucy's arm's.

Julie Rodabaugh Lucy must have been a very frequent flier, I can relate at least a dozen stories concerning Lucy and cabin crews that were far different than that of your "Norwegian" granny. One such FA was my wife who was one of three FAs insulted and screamed at by Lucy. An incident that match so many occasions related in the books written about Lucy, including one written by her daughter. BTW- We are Norwegian, what does that have to do with anything? Lucy is the number #1 worst airline celebrity passenger according to many many FAs. The best celebrity passenger? Joan Rivers

I never met Lucy in person, but in every interview I have ever watched of her, especially those with an audience, you could just see how grateful and humbled she was at the audiences happiness, enthusiasm and applause!! And she was always so gracious and graceful when she wasn't acting a part, that was supposed to portray otherwise!!! It will always be a blessing to have had her touch our world!!!

I've used Lucille as an avatar for over a decade. I look nothing like Lucy, but her red hair reminds me of my Grandmother's; the names "Lucille" and "Lucy" conjures the immediate thought of class, style, beauty, talent and grace. Even as a child when watching "I Love Lucy" I remember thinking how well she was always dressed, she made her beautiful clothing look even better with her posture! Lucille, Betty White and Carol Burnett are three ladies that will always be in my heart.

My Mom always came up with hair brained schemes to make extra money as there was 6 kids so we could have a swim pass, go on vacation, etc. Some of them were hilarious. Gale Gordon mentioned how stardom never went to Lucy's head. that a person did not have to genuflect in her presence. I personally know how true that is. In 1962 or 1963. I went on high school spring break with my parents to LA. We would get maps and drive around to see the stars homes. My parents actually parked the car on Lucille Ball's Street and I was able to get out and walk past her house. Lucille Ball drove out her driveway right when I got to the driveway. I will never forget she stopped and roll down her window, and I asked her for her autograph. She gave that to me gladly and then proceeded to tell me to be very careful as her street was very busy. She very easily could have totally ignored me. She made my day and I have yet to forget that. She is my all-time favorite actress. We will always love you Lucy.

Wow. So watching this really brought up memories. Especially when she said it was like losing a member of the family. That's exactly how I felt. I was 7 years old the day she died and at school when my mom heard on the news. She said she started praying no one would tell me there because she knew I would be devastated. When I got home she told me, and I cried for days. I watched Lucy everyday. She was my idol. I now have two beautiful drawings of Desi and Lucy in my home. They are my pride and joy.

Lucy was before my time, heck, her children were before my time lol, but, for some reason, from the moment I 1st watched her on I Love Lucy, there was something that drew me to her. As a kid, she reminded me of my Mother, her & my Mom, dead on, looked so much alike, so maybe that was it, but all I know is they broke the mold after Lucy & there's not been another since, she's in a league all her own. Since, as an adult, I know the Lucy she was before the I Love Lucy show, what a gal! RIP my look alike Mom-I LOVE Lucy!

I remember seeing the special about her and Desi. There was a very touching moment at the end. She and desi were swimming with Lucie's son. When he was very young. Right before Mr desi passed away. He died in 1986. And she did in 1989. I remember watching her last series. Life with Lucy. With gale Gordon. I thought it was very good. She had better shows, but it was great to see her on TV one last time.

Love the story about the man who played backgammon with her. She was just a true blue Lady with a lot of class.

She also played backgammon with a gentleman named Lee Tieneman(not sure about the last name but he wrote a book about her). Just a bit of trivia---lLucy's favorite flowers were lilacs! If ever anyone has the opportunity to visit Jamestown NY, it is definitely worth it. The birthday festival weekend is highly recommended!!!!

@@chadsoard500 I have alwas been a fan . Whenever I am having a bad day, all I need to do is watch a Lucille Ball movie, or watch my collection of I Love Lucy dvds. As many times as I have watched, she still makes me laugh. Whenever she mentioned Jamestown, NY I thought that I would like to travel to Jtown. Several years ago my mom and I made the journey to attend the Lucille Ball birthday celebration/festival weekend. We even stayed an extra. There was so many events to attend, people to meet, places to go. Very fond memories. We were going to attend another festival, but had to change our plans because mom was not feeling well, and her health was top priority. We live near Cooperstown, NY, home of the Baseball Hall ⚾️f Fame. One of the places on the tour was the cemetary, and there were sooooo many lilac floral arrangements. Rick Ninege has a wonderful website. Stay well. Always happy to read comments to my comments. Have you ever seen the movie "The Long, Long Trailer with Lucy and Desi? It is hilarious! Also the movie "Yours, Mine and Ours", and "Mame". Three of my favorites🙂🙏

Hey Gentleman, You should say Hispanic, not Latin. Not every Hispanic has the concept of wine, women and songs. In every ethnic it could happen and not everybody in that ethnic group is the same. My father was a gentleman to my mother.

If the shoe fits, wear it! If it doesn't, avoid the ignorant person who said it! Don't get all hung up about it!
