Here's a view of the interior of the Roman Colosseum. Imagine seating all the way up to the top and you will appreciate how big this was almost 2,000 years ago. The missing half of the outer shell was plundered for material used in other building projects in Rome, including St. Peter's Basilica. The ground level where the gladiators fought the animals was covered with sand. The Latin word for sand is "arenae" or "arena." A portion of the ground level has been constructed so you can see how big it was.
