John is certainly confusing the issue! The "same pick" shouldn't make the mandolins sound the same, but reveal the difference in how they sound. Using the same pick makes it a constant, not a variable, hence any perceived difference in tone cannot be attributed to the pick since he used the same pick on both mandolins.
Great comparison from the master of tone! Both instruments sound great. The Loar a bit crisper sounding perhaps. The Heiden is definitely right up there though. John can coax the best tone from an instrument. So enjoyable to listen to him pick.
