Multiple camera views of an EF3 tornado passing within a quarter-mile as debris rains down and pelts the car and the photographer in Mount Vernon, Indiana on July 9, 2024. The tornado formed from a supercell thunderstorm in the remnants of Hurricane Beryl. Copyright Dan Robinson.

Mesmerizing video! When the March 1998 tornado hit St Peter Minnesota, it was reported that newspapers/mail were found approximately 60 miles away in Minneapolis St Paul. This video perfectly illustrates how that's possible.

Amazing video, I remember seeing lots of large chunks of debris circulating around the tornado from a distance, but this close-up of the debris field is just incredible.

An EF3 tornado has wind speeds between 136 and 165 mph. A Cat 5 Hurricane has sustained wind speeds of 157mph or greater. They are basically comparable in wind speed. The main difference is that a Cat 5 hurricane can last for hours in any given spot along its primary track. I simply say this because many people can’t seem to grasp the power of a hurricane so comparing it with a tornado may help. Obviously, both are deadly. For the Record, Hurricane Patricia had sustained winds of 345 km/h (215 mph) which are the highest on record globally. An EF5 has winds of 200mph or greater. So, if people can imagine that the most powerful hurricanes reach the wind speeds of the highest class of tornadoes then hopefully that will help them stay out of the way. As far as the highest wind speed ever recorded- a mobile Doppler weather radar initially recorded winds of 302 mph (486 km/h) within the tornado at Bridge Creek - subsequent reanalysis in 2021 revised this value to 321 mph (517 km/h), the highest wind speed ever recorded on Earth. That was the 1999 Bridge Creek-Moore tornado near OKC. The EF Scale moves in increments of 25mph for the high end of each scale. So, that 1999 tornado would have been almost an EF 10 (based on the wind speed increases through levels 1-5) if such a number actually existed on that scale. So,yes,obviously- tornado wind speeds do ultimately get much faster than those of hurricanes.

State workers and volunteers. I helped once for a week after Hurricane Charlie. The state will send out requests to small and large local businesses (landscapers, handymen etc) and they come and help
