What an enormous disaster! People have lost their lives, people missing, a massive mess which will be a nightmare to clean up etc.. From The Netherlands I wish Baltimore strength and sufficient resources in equipment and manpower to solve this hughe problem.

RU-vid hides my comments, crazy how everyone involved allowed a ship to run into a bridge, again, in 2024... because they wanted to save money by not using tugboats. Even a small child knows about tugboats. I personally, in all my years have never crash my boat into objects catastrophically, it's actually extremely difficult to be this incompetent. But when Baltimore is involved I'm not surprised.

The loss of life is tragic but could have been so so much worse if not for those responsible for stopping traffic to the bridge. So far it's estimated the loss of life is 6 people which is very minimal for how large of an accident this could have been.

I worked in Baltimore 13 years ago. When I saw the ship hit the bridge my hands just grasped my abdomen. Wooooo, my Lord and my God 😱😱😖😖🤯🤯😢. I drove across this bridge before. My prayers go out to every family. I pray for the shipping and supply chain industry, I pray for all the investigators for fortitude and mental clarity as they piece together how this happened and drafting their reports. And I thank God that many were spared.

Why hasn’t anybody bothered to ask why the construction crew weren’t notified? Anybody working on the bridge should have direct communication with the coast guard, who can issue an immediate evacuation. If this had happened then, in 90 seconds, probably they could’ve driven off that bridge and they’d be alive. Something very very wrong here. The coast guard waits for the ship to issue a mayday? Why is nobody watching to take preemptive action? There was no need for anybody for die.

I'm sure the appropriate people are doing what they can for the families. The loss of life is tragic of course, but the closure of the channel is going to be a major blow to shipping, the economy, work which is also going to affect a lot of families as well. Also think of the conditions the divers have to go through to recover the bodies, it's a mix of sharp metal girders, unstable structure and concrete, not the safest conditions to dive even for a recovery operation for the bodies, and I bet that is jarring for the them knowing they can't do more safely.

They should build a suspension bridge like as Golden Gate bridge here.
@jeremyc6054
@jeremyc6054 Месяц назад
most likely, for a span of this width, it would be a cable-stayed bridge (like the new Tappan Zee Bridge, or the new portion of the Oakland Bay Bridge). Classic suspension bridges (like the Golden Gate) are indicated for much longer unsupported spans in which the stiffness of the road deck is insufficient to support the horizontal loading of the diagonal cables on a cable-stayed bridge.
@mikewillett5076
@mikewillett5076 Месяц назад
Hear that. Ever been on or seen the Chesapeake Bay Bridge that goes from Annapolis to Kent Island (the Eastern Shore)? It's 4.3 miles long. Other than the ends it's a combo of cantilever and suspension sections. A lot of people are terrified of it. And now I'm more nervous about it. (Not to be confused with the Bay Bridge/Tunnel in VA but that's scary too. Much longer but not nearly as high).
@mikewillett5076
@mikewillett5076 Месяц назад
@@jeremyc6054. It's nearly the same length of the Golden Gate, 1.6 miles. Just that each end is plain flat concrete bridge on pilings a good way out on each side. They're still standing, would be considerably quicker to reuse them but they probably won't.
@jeremyc6054
@jeremyc6054 Месяц назад
@@mikewillett5076in this case, the relevant "length" is the length of the longest unsupported span (i.e. with no other vertical supports between them). The approach viaducts on either side (supported by a series of pilings) would be in addition to that, and can be quite long (as in the case of the Francis Scott Key Bridge). The Golden Gate Bridge has an unsupported center span of 4200 feet. The Francis Scott Key Bridge had an unsupported span of 1200 feet. Generally, cable-stayed bridges are the most economical choice for main spans up to about 2000 feet, although a few very new ones (built since 2010 or so) are in the 3000' range. Conventional suspension bridges are the only game in town for main spans longer than that, with the longest ones currently a little over 6000 feet. Another point to keep in mind is that conventional suspension bridges require very large abutments at either end in order to anchor the main suspension cables to the bedrock, these would have to be built from scratch (if it's even possible, depending on the local geography). Cable-stayed bridges do not require this, as all loads are transferred to the vertical pier(s). The main advantage to going with a conventional suspension design here would be the ability to have a wider open channel, although this would come at massively increased cost (and probably longer duration to completion), and may not result in any additional navigability depending on the water depth outside of the existing channel.

I already know what two of the NTSB's recommendations in the wake of this disaster will be. One is that ships of that size need tighter handling, such as using tugboats, when navigating in tight ports like Baltimore. The tugs assisting the Dali that night should not have left the Dali's side so soon, and if they were needed elsewhere at the time, it would mean that such ports need more tugboats on standby to handle all those massive ships at once. Two is that bridges of that calibre over heavily-used shipping channels need proper protection to be able to take the force of such crashes. Bridges all over North America and probably around the world may already be in the process of being reassessed in terms of such protection.

From watching this and other detailed reports, I think the big 'take-away' is that modern, ultra-heavy ships, and old bridges with inadequate protection around their piers, don't mix. I worry about the Richmond/San Rafael Bridge, just north of San Francisco. It looks more rickety than the F.S. Key Bridge ever did. Oil tankers and a few freighters frequently go under that particular bridge.

Bottom line Baltimore wasn't prepared for this eventuality. It was more important to house and feed the illegals. The reduction on important critical harbor services was apparent. Now because of their ineptness they have bigger issues but will still support the illegals while the citizens get even less. Grief will eventually turn into anger over their politicians spending their tax dollars in the wrong place. A few dollars spent on Tug Boats would have solved this entire debacle. God Bless the Families involved.

For the record someone left a comment that in China they use tugs to move ships around so I went looking for answers. I could not find proof that the Chinese use tugs outside of their ports. But what the port of Shanghai does is require a declaration that the ship is mechanically sound and the ship is subject to an inspection of the mechanical soundness of the ship. This might have prevented having a boat subject to engine power loss docking in your harbour. Everybody give me your thoughts.

Even a safety inspector. All major contracts in this area are heavily staffed for safety and inspection purposes. Just wondering who signed the shift safety log and may have been present during this work. Did they see danger and flee? I realize this will not help in any way for the loss of life, and I'm grateful nobody else was injured. Just wondering.....
