For someone visiting NYC for the first time, the Empire State Building is just one of those that makes your jaw drop. Seeing it in person after seeing in tv, movies, book covers, magazines, and ads your whole life, to then see it piercing the sky in front of you, is an INCREDIBLE experience

I worked on the 69th floor of the Empire State Building from the late 80's to early 90's. We had north and west exposures. At that time the building had large double hung windows that could be easily lifted open, just like at home. Twice a year the window washers would come to the office, fling open the windows and climb out, hooking their harnesses to the window frame. We had advance notice that the windows were going to be cleaned and so cleared the area near the windows so that our work material wouldn't be sucked out. I saw Katherine Hepburn in the elevator lobby once and had an elevator ride alone with Bernadette Peters. It took a minute and a half to get from the ground floor to the 69th floor with no stops. The lobby is an Art Deco masterpiece filled with banks and banks of elevators.

To me this building is THE skyscraper. Even though it's height has been surpassed, even in it's own city by 5 or 6 others, it still has a commanding presence in the city's skyline.

The Empire State Building has to be the most iconic skyscraper of them all. My favorite skyscraper for sure along with the Chrysler building. Art Deco style isn't around in most cities which is why i think New York is better than Chicago.

As a kid I grew up in awe of the Empire State Building and am sure it influenced my decision to become a structural engineer. Every time we went to the city I begged my parents t go there. As a young adult I was fortunate to serve my apprenticeship (EIT) with Skidmore Owens and Merrill assigned to Fazlur Kahn during the design and construction of Sears Tower. Yes, Sears is taller but it just does not have the mass or presence of the Empire State Building. Something about all that Art Deco and the grandiose designs of the period - It rocks.

To me the ESB has a soul and a real personality. Needless to say the people involved in its construction in a mere 14 months seems like a 'Miracle', let alone an truly Iconic symbol of American know how, and will , to create a real engineering marvel for all to admire and enjoy now and for many decades to come. Only 9 years until its 100th Anniversary.

The Great Depression made jobs hard to come by. So when a huge building project like the Empire State Building is being planned, every able-bodied men in New York and beyond came flocking to help build it. This allowed multiple shifts of workers working 24 hours non-stop.

That's because NYC Skyline from the NJ side just before entering the Lincoln tunnel looks like a suspension bridge of tall buildings, down to shorter buildings back to taller ones. It's cute. Then the "little" Statue of Liberty out in the water. And it's in so many things from movies to video games.

I believe the Empire State Building was a structure that was truly ahead of its time. Most buildings from the 1920’s and 1930’s were mostly pretty short, but the ESB truly set a standard for many super-tall skyscrapers that would be built decades later. I consider it one of my favorite skyscrapers, as well as the One WTC, Willis Tower, Taipei 101, and the Petronas Towers.

My grandfather bought Otis elevator in 1986 and it's still works very well to this day! Got stuck a couple of times in it....it was creepy to say the least.

Fred: I agree wholeheartedly with your comment on the over-use of "iconic". When I visited that building in the early '80s the observation deck's "safety" fence was nothing more than a chain-wire barrier about 10 foot tall. I could lean against it to push it outward for a more directly downwards view.

I remember arriving in NYC for the first time in 1994, gazing up at the Empire State Building in the back of a taxi. It's an awe-inspiring building. The Art Deco lobby is beautiful. I took the lift up the 86th floor (1050 feet). The other observatory on the 102nd floor ((1250 feet) was closed at that time.

My favorite building. Regret that I never went to the 102nd floor before it was enclosed. Years ago, I think it was 20/20 they had a cameraman who wasn't afraid of heights go up there when they had to change out the blinking red light on the very top. It was awesome.

Seeing the Empire State building In real life is an experience in its self. As well as the Chrysler building. To me both are equal to each other.

itsbadbjeff impressive, no doubt. But Lincoln cathedral held the record for the worlds tallest building for 238 years between 1311 and 1548, having taken the title from the great pyramid at Giza which had held it for the best part of 3000 years!

I went up the Empire State in January right as all the renovations were being completed, it was so cool, especially with the new screens on the roof and floor of the elevators

Went up to the top of the Empire State Building twice as a kid visiting New York City, and saw the great metropolis from the top floor observation deck. Never forget it. Thanks for the upload.

When I was a child and we were taught history The Empire State Building was the tallest building in the world. Now if you ask someone they would probably have to ask Google. None of the modern buildings look quite so Iconic as The Empire State Building in America except possibly the Chrysler and Woolworth building as well.

When I visited the Empire State building, the craziest thing to me were the windows on the top floor. The window frames were wooden and you could tell very old. You've probably seen similar window frames in older buildings that were 1 or 2 floors high, except here we were on the 80th or 90th floor. It took me back in time, imagining how it must have been for people working in this building in the 1930s, cracking a window open at a slant for fresh air.
