This video in our "Inside the History" series focuses on the Upper Handling Room for the 5"38 secondary gun system on USS Massachusetts, its operation, and historical use. Battleship Gunner's Mate Tom Lowney discusses the operation, ammunition, and manpower utilized in this room for two mounts to represent the 10 5"38 gun batteries on South Dakota-class battleships.

Very interesting. My father was in the upper handling room in mount 52 (5”/38) on the light cruiser USS Atlanta during WW2. When she was sunk that space was hit and everyone in there was killed except my dad.

Suggestion for the mic. Move it away from underneath the jaw to a place is not in the way of causing the jaw to hit it when moving the head head down. I causes all sorts of distortion.

I really enjoy Tom's presentation style. The information just seems to flow so easily and really helps me understand a bit what it must have been like to operate some of the systems. I did notice a mirror behind the projectile hoist where Tom started the video. Is it original equipment, and if so what was it put there for? I am also curious about how the handling crew would know what type of shells to load (AP, HE, Star, WP, etc). How did the crew get notified when it was changing? I would think things would be moving so fast in the handling room it'd be kind of a trick to change over all of a sudden.

Mirror is for the display so you can see the backside of things
