INSIDE THE RETAIL APOCALYPSE! ABANDONED STORE CRISIS!

Malls, retail stores, and restaurants all across the country are going out of business in a lead up to this coming recession / depression. The lucky ones that are still in business, are having a hard time right now as inflation is killing people's purchasing power and forcing many to only spend on essentials. How long can this go on for before everyone realizes the jig is up??

I stop buying new clothes, you can find nice pants and shorts at the thrift store. I try not to buy anything new. I will buy new washer and dryer plus stove and refrigerator. That's about it. I haven't had a new car since 2006. Now I don't have a .car at all. The cost of things have gone up to high . I'm just really cutting costs. I was just in Kroger. I was looking at some beef steaks the price was 65.00 they were big I won't pay for bones in meats department. I still buy hole chicken. Have a good time in your home state. Enjoy

Worked part time at Kohl’s for about six months. 1. Theft was rampant. SO many people without shame. 2. Customers are pigs. They dump merchandise all over the store and Kohl’s pays multiple people every day to pick stuff up. 3. Did I mention customers are pigs? You can spend an hour organizing and folding a shelf and it will take just one person a few minutes to destroy it, making it difficult for the next person to find what they need. People just don’t care. 4. Because customers are pigs, employees have to spend a lot of time monitoring suspicious behavior instead of fixing problems mentioned in items 2 and 3. Then people wonder why stuff is so expensive

These days, ANY mall I go to is a mere shadow of what the mall experience used to be. I think back to the holiday seasons of 2004/2005, and several of the malls were so jam packed, you struggled to find even one parking space. Sometimes you'd circle through the entire perimeter of the mall, for up to ten minutes, trying to grab a spot as someone else was leaving. Inside the malls, every inch of floor space was full of people, restaurants had lines, jewelry stores were packed, perfume counters in departments stores were slammed. When you consider what retail once was, it's pretty clear that it's now on life support.

@@MichaelCoughlanmusic that would be cool if I could use bitcoin to pay my rent purchase gas and buy groceries. The only people that can purchase bitcoin are those with expendable dollars. But if you have a large family and live check to check. Bitcoin is of no use. We are starting to see a huge increase in the gap between the upper class and the lower class. Middle class is staring to become obsolete. This is why 30000 people on average leave the state of California. The working class can no longer afford to live there. California is a precursor of what will happen to the rest of the nation if things don’t change. Bitcoin will only save the rich.

Anecdotal story that sums up why brick and mortar retail is failing: Needed a replacement tire for my wheelbarrow. Saw them at Home Depot drove 10 minutes at 9pm on a Friday night to go buy it. Found two on the shelf, both had the axle adapters removed from the packaging. Drove down the street to Lowe’s, walked around for 10 minutes trying to find tires. They did not have the one I needed. An hour total of my time wasted. At midnight, I went on Amazon, found the tire I needed and it was delivered in the morning. More and more, I just go to Amazon. Soooo much easier

Unfortunately, that's the sad death spiral of this country, back in the day you would have had the choice of multiple (Mom and Pop/ Locally own Stores) to shop at but, once people started feeding their dollars to Big Box Stores like Walmart, Lowes, Home Depot...your choices became Large Corporate Scum bags..lol. This was ultimately the end goal, kill local economies and make them dependent on large corporations for consumer goods. Amazon will push this evaporation of local and ultimately national choice away until there is just a handful of Companies that supply you the items (goods) you consume. The definition of digging our own graves but, hey what do I know.

I’m older than both of you and remember when malls were the social centers for the town. They were a place where people met. I met my ex in a mall in our home town. I can remember when going to the mall with $20 and you could have an actual date including dinner and a movie non-matinee prices. Now days, that won’t even get you one Big Mac combo for 1. I don;t agree with this idea, people used to like going shopping, wandering around looking at stuff and eating out. I hate ordering online especially for clothes but then I don't do it. People have completely stopped spending money in my opinion and the private equity firms that own these malls are raising rents to make up for loses which means they're going bust. This is worse than 2008 in my opinion, I just cannot see how the Gov can bail out all the failing banks again but if they do then there will be even more inflation and higher rates to come.

Sad. I live in the UK and we have a similar problem. Town shopping malls, open , fill up, but the surrounding shops shut down. Then the odd shop in the centre's shut. The problem, other than the cost of living is rates that cash strapped councils have imposed on shops.

I agree. The restaurant experience is no longer enjoyable. The food is not as good as it once way. They are squeezing you into such a small space that the server has a hard time getting you your food. I don’t mind paying a little more for a nice time but if the atmosphere and food is no better than what I could do at home, Why do it ? Then I’m suppose to leave a nice tip on top of that.

We have cut back dramatically on our restaurant nights . The one thing that really stands out for me is the cost of beer and drinks since 2017 . In 2017 a beer would cost $2.50. Today that same beer cost anywhere from $4.00 to $8.00. As a consequence we just don’t go out every night of the weekend anymore . We’ve cut it to Saturday only. Why pay $8.00 dollars for a Coors Light when I can buy it all day at Krogers for $1.00. How can anyone justify that mark up and who is dumb enough to pay it ?
