I really am going to start making more. TBH they’re just harder to make and edit. I do them myself and I hate to say I’m a little out of time

Excellent video. You're the only sawyer on RU-vid that I've come across that saws for grade intentionally and knows what FAS means. I love how you quickly and accurately balance speed, quality and yield. Enjoyable to watch a professional.

I’ve never seen thee horizontal saw blades like you have ? You can edge and size as you saw ? That’s amazing. I’ve been around a lot of mills. That is the first time I’ve seen a saw like that. Really good videos. Keep them coming !

I worked in a sawmill for 30 years. Maybe U could show a video of feeding the log infeed deck. Show Ur barker. Also show were the slash on the end of the chain goes.

Are able to produce some boards that will grade out as "quarter-sawn"?
@Helmsburgsawmill
@Helmsburgsawmill 5 месяцев назад
Nope. It’s just a flat cut mill. The edgers would get in the way. You have to quarter the log first.

So after watching a few more of your videos now I understand that you guys grind all your slabs and waste into chips. And I can assume that you have a market for those chips as well as the bark? I also noticed your handlers aren't "Sticking" the lumber as they are stacking it. So i can assume that you guys do NOT have a way to dry this lumber out side of air drying over time??
@Helmsburgsawmill
@Helmsburgsawmill 5 месяцев назад
Yes we grind them and have markets for all of our by products! And this particular batch is getting shipped directly to a buyer. We don’t have a kiln. But we do stick our own lumber and we sell air dryer to the public

Is it hard for you to tell when the cant is bowing up and needs to be flipped 180° so as not to get thick and thin lumber?
@Helmsburgsawmill
@Helmsburgsawmill 5 месяцев назад
Nope! I can almost always tell when a piece is bowing

Does poplar stink like cottonwood does? Can you set the knees for taper?
@Helmsburgsawmill
@Helmsburgsawmill 5 месяцев назад
Poplar actually smells kind of sweet earthy! And I sure can. I can extent each bunk out individually. I use it on almost every log to center up the heart

@@Helmsburgsawmill tks for the reply. As I only know softwood lumber it's interesting to learn about the hardwood species. I asked about setting for taper as I hadn't noticed it being done in earlier videos. First clue that told me that you were setting was there wasn't any short boards.
@Helmsburgsawmill
@Helmsburgsawmill 5 месяцев назад
Yes! If those logs had more of a flare I probably would’ve gotten some shorter boards

@Helmsburgsawmill
@Helmsburgsawmill 5 месяцев назад
This is load of grade lumber that is getting ship to macbeath heardwoods to be turned into whatever they see fit🤷 it could be turned into flooring, or even just milled down into smaller pieces that are more like trim boards

Your view kinda sucks! The edger column is really wide. But, I guess you get used to it and do what you do very well and so quickly.
