One of the forgotten gems of the early 80's. The acting is superb for an ABC mini-series. Of note, Rutger Hauer, and Derek Jacobi put in particularly good performances.
@regertz

Terrific job by both. Hauer distrusted Speer's account and was unhappy that Speer's wife was rewritten as a sort of conscience for Speer when the history showed she went along with his decisions quite unquestioningly. Jacobi does a fine job of showing how Hitler could be reasonable and charming, on the surface.

wonderful series....acting and the sets absolutely top notch. Derek Jacobi is masterful as Der Fuhrer....also I'd forgotten Randy Quaid was in this and what a strong performance as Putzi Hanfstaengl. Would be brilliant if they could remaster it into HD quality, that would be the only thing that could improve it as a production.

Model- Man, the new rules seem to be having an effect now, the end of 2019, long before they actually come into effect, the threats of fines, very large fines, appears to be forcing a lot of channels to block comments and therefore advertisements so that they don’t fall foul of these new, seemingly draconian, rules/laws, the crazy part is that only channels in the USA can be directly fined, and RU-vid will be liable for fines applied to channels outside of the USA, it seems to me that the only possible outcome of this, if the rules are applied as vigorously as reports suggest they will be, is that RU-vid will be forced to cease its activities, and that doesn’t make economic sense, therefore the rules are a mute point, and self destructive to a very popular social media platform that brings a great amount of taxes and revenue into the American treasury, money that in part pays for the regulatory body responsible for applying the very fines they apply, so they in turn will either become a mute point or unnecessary, in my opinion the USA are a) trying to control the way other sovereign nations view and respond to social media posts (a bit like the Nazis controlled the media) b) have devised rules that are purely and poorly designed to affect social media, and not designed to protect the youth of America as they want to appear. c) these rules have been introduced unilaterally by the American administration without any regard for the economic harm the could cause in other nations. Let’s hope that the USA regulatory body realise that they have made a huge mistake before its to late to save RU-vid and any other social media platforms that could end up in the same position as RU-vid. My biggest gripe though is the fact that the USA 🇺🇸 has/is taking unilateral action to control a worldwide platform and ruin it for everyone, and in a way is similar to the control exercised by countries like China, North Korea, Russia and other draconian states, that the United States purports to be against and regularly admonishes other nations for human rights violations, and whilst nobody can accuse the USA of human rights violations on the scale of others it’s a step on a slippery slope towards that situation, it’s a case of “don’t do as I do, do as I say” and that’s a very scary prospect. Sorry for such a long reply, but in this case I find it necessary to get it of my chest, especially as some of my favourite channels have taken to blocking comments already, RU-vid is meant to be a platform that allows and encourages diversity of thought and opinions, within reason of course, but without blocking free thought and expression. After all that I will put my soapbox away and stop writing my own version of War and Peace.
@allandavis8201
@allandavis8201 4 года назад
Chris, and the end of the internet, or at least social media platforms like RU-vid, is not as far fetched as it might seem, the USA seem hell bent on destroying at least social media platforms, if not the whole internet, it could be a case of “we gave it, so we can take it away” and where that would leave the world 🌍 nobody knows. I know my opinion seems far fetched, but not impossible.

When the book came out Speers wife was furious with him for taking away the happiest memories she had far removed from the rest of Germany, living a privileged life in Hitlers circle. This portrayal may make for dramatic contrast, but is not as things were.

At 1:45.00 in, the lunch scene where Hitler invites Speer for Lunch for the first time, right after Rhom, Hess, Himmler, Gobbels and the others of "the inner circle". Boy does the film really do justice to the whole atmosphere and feeling of how that had to have happened in real.life. Rarely has there ever been such a collection of evil, slimy, creepy, disguting, sociopathic, cuthroats anywhere before or since. You clearly get the sense that at the meeting before and lunch as they're all staring daggers at him that they would kill him in a second, indeed badly want to kill him, and the only thing keeping them from doing so is that Hitler would notice, if he disappeared or was murdered they thought Hitler might catch them and they would be in big trouble and loose power with Hitler, which they fear more than anything else in the world. What a fantastic job they did in both those scenes, it feels as if you were there almost experiencing it hand first.

There are some flaws in the beginning of the movie. I have read Speer's diaries he wrote in jail and also the very good book by the late Gitta Sereny " Albert Speer ,his battle with truth". She spent many months at Speer's house after he was released at the end of his term of imprisonment and sets a very impartial portrait of the man, not hesitating a minute to corner him when he contradicts himself. I do recommend to anyone interested in this period to read both books. The first error at the beginning of the movie is that the relationship between Speer and his parents were not very good even when he was a child, and especially with his mother. The parents used to favor their other two sons. Henry T. King, deputy prosecutor at Nuremberg who later wrote a book about Speer, said "Love and warmth were lacking in the household of Speer's youth."(source Wikipedia). The parents would always give reason to their elder sons even if they had been wrong, Speer explained to Sereny. Another flaw in the movie (I have not finished to see the 1st part), is the speech of Hitler at the university. Speer explains in his diary and in the interview with Sereny, that contrary to his usual ways, Hitler made a very calm speech, not at all the usual shrieking and exalted one.

It was later found (20) yrs after his prison release that he DID in fact know and even approve of all the atrocities that he 'only took responsibility' for but never actually said IM GUILTY ! Several document minutes relating to the last few meetings held for the extermination of the Jews were proof that Sperry had in fact been in attendance...and was in agreement although he denied at Nuremberg.....He had a 'poker' face and it payed off for him ...as he fooled the European and British Judges @ Nuremberg,,,,however Russian Judges were NOT fooled and wanted him to hang but they were out voted for 20 yr sentence/by Britian & USA...….( Sperry was anything BUT the loving tender father and husband depicted in this Hollywood movie)

@@Theranchhouse1 Exactly!! He was a ruthless opportunistic sociopath. The prosecution team at Nuremberg were just grateful to have a Nazi that said sorry and take some accountability. They were so easy on him during the trial. People that worked for him were hanged but he was spared, that makes total sense 🙄🙄. Even when he got out of prison he was more concerned with interviews and making money than he was with his own family. He came out and was completely cold and cruel to his wife, didn't even try to reconnect with his kids and died with one of his mistresses. If he hadn't played the "Good Nazi" (Whatever the hell that is) card he would've been put to death with the rest of them.

@@archaic9525Goering is a very tricky character morally. On the one hand he owned everything and pretty much accepted that the allies had no intention of allowing him to live. On the other hand, like Speer, he was ruthlessly efficient in his pursuit of of power and prestige. He may not have been as responsible for the Holocaust as Himmler but he knew about the camps and he sent his political rivals to them without blinking. He fell out of favor with Hitler early in the war but he remained popular with the German people as an eccentric comical figure. Like a the third Reich's crazy uncle. He was intelligent charming and very well traveled. He spoke English, German, Italian and French fluidly. The only reason Hitler got an audience with Mussolini is because of how close El Dulce and Goering were as friends. Mussolini hated Hitler and thought he was a raving lunatic for most of their acquaintance. He used to tap people's phones at the Reichstag and listen to Himmler, Goebbels and Rhom talk shit about him. But instead of being pissed he was amused with their insulting nicknames for him Herr Reaktion was his favorite. Unlike the other Nazi high command he was a faithful husband to both of his wives. His first wife he practically worshipped, and he was by all accounts devastated by her sudden death. He was a patron of many Jewish painters and artisians and resisted the Nuremberg laws until he was basically given a direct order from Hitler Himself to get them passed and implemented. His brother was actively anti-Nazi and every time he was arrested for helping Jewish people Goering would order the Gestapo to release him and the people he was helping. This is one of the major reasons Himmler despised him. He and Hitler had a huge falling out over the invasion of Russia and allegedly is one of the only people in Hitler's inner circle to tell him straight up that they were losing the war and they should sue for peace After that he basically moved to his country estate and partied for the next 3 years until he was captured by the allies. He was also a huge opioid addict when he was finally caught he had 3000 Codien tablets in his luggage. I have mixed feelings about Goering, was his conviction and death sentence justified. Absolutely. Was he on the same level as Himmler and Goebbels, no.

27:40 this was well done, though I suppose necessarily abbreviated for the movie. He'd sometimes stand silent for a minute or two letting the tension build. Gotta admit, the old bastard really was a good actor.

Yea if youll notice nearly all political candidates in the modern age will do the same thing. Its like they all copy Hitler because they know that he was a very effective speaker. Its also why youtube and other platforms want to erase Hitler speeches, so that the average person does not know what he actually had to say.

When they went to the bar, they would have gotten 3 beers, as they held up the first and middle fingers, as is normal elsewhere. But for 2 beers in Germany, you hold up the thumb and first finger, as the thumb is counted first when counting. If the thumb is not seen, it is still added to total number of fingers.

True. I discovered that when I moved to Berlin. “Pils, bitte!” I said hold up my index finger. Pils take a long time to pour waiting for the head to settle and get drawn off. So by the time it was ready I was good & thirsty. Of course two beers were brought to me because as mentioned above the absence of a raised thumb is simply added to the number of fingers raised. That was fine. It saved me the bother and time of ordering another.

I just love the fact that this video starts out with the FBI copyright warning. I would say that it is kind of important to remove the copyright warning before violating copyright laws by posting other people's material, but clearly it isn't all that important.

Boy, that guy's boss is a real Hitler. Of all the Hitlers I've seen, from Bruno Ganz on down, not one of them could capture the way Hitler kept people in line with abuse like Sir Derek does at 40:46 (for example). You want only to calm him down as fast as possible-- the guy was, fundamentally, just an incredible bully in person. Thx to Speer for the firsthand depiction.

Derek Jacobi didn’t just read lines. It is obvious from the first scene with him that he studied Hitler. But he needed to study him a little more. The outbursts of rage existed, but were not always going on.

@@kevinhealey6540 True if we could predict the future, I mean the mafia is known for crime that is predictable, but at the time it was a desperate situation with the communist problem, the adjective was removing the communist from Europe, even Oswald Mosley when asked about German agression towards England said "Hitler wanted to go east" And it was England & France that declared war on Germany . . . Few Americans realize just how bad things got for us Europeans, in Portugal we didn't finally get rid of the communist until 1974. Even the Americans (that are for freedom of speech) even they under Eisenhower banned the communist party in 1958. A communist problem so great Francisco Franco asked Germany & Italy for help fighting them in 1936 - something in my opinion the British & French should have done also - liberate Europe of the communist. Back to my point, those Hitler speeches emphasized the importance of a country to be free of foreign interference from the communist (again a very real threat) to go to a party movement at the time was at the time to support a government free of communism, fascism was the byproduct of communism . . . Interestingly even today in America the conversation is about Russia and its threat to the West . . . a threat only one man had the courage to fight head on . . . If I recall Gen. Patton said words to that effect about - fighting the wrong enemy . . . 🖐🇵🇹

The Third Reich is one of the most fascinating parts of history to me. How one mid-size country rose up and become so powerful, taking over neighboring countries and eventually an entire continent. To the point where the entire world was within reach of ONE man, if the opposing nations (the Allies) had not stuck together to defeat a common enemy. Despite their political differences, like the USA and USSR. They got together, defeated the enemy and then became enemies over night, its insteresting.
