It's so cool how all of these craftspeople are keeping the art of kimono alive. I had the privilege of wearing kimono during study abroad, and I am still in awe of how much love and care goes into wearing them and keeping them beautiful. The fact that the people featured in this video want to make kimono more accessible for everyday life is absolutely wonderful, from the advocacy of wearing them more casually, to upcycling them and using them as tools around the home. Love how an old, traditional art can find new and exciting ideas of creativity 🥰

If you happen to be in Kyoto, I can recommend Yaya / やゝ. It's a smaller shop but they have a good amount of Kimono's for sale. Got myself one there during my trip last year.

Wow, that was so interesting. It's good that they're trying to make it more casual and less rules so people are more encouraged to wear kimonos and not just keep it for special occasions. Such nice designs. I really liked some of the accessories at the end.

Really interesting video, thanks for it! I thought the idea of turning kimono into plates and trays was excellent. A way to have the lovely patterns and designs seen more would get my money. I hope she and her company do very well.

So many fun patterns and accessories. Makes me want to buy them. I have never worn a kimono, but I hope to at some point in my life. They make it look so fun. I'm glad the world of kimonos is becoming more relaxed and fun. 😊

Personally I liked the obi with faces and the advice to tie it in front and then turn it around. I'm really happy they all want to bring it back to being fun and casual!

I have often thought that the Kimono, and the Indian Sari, are the most recognisable national dress, so unique.

I remember Japan in the early 70s..i had a childhood friend...the people I knew wore silk kimonos...I moved to Australia in 1975...if your interested in lost Japanese history check out the Brisbane museum in Queensland...there's some lost work under lock and key ...her last name was Roberts...she was married to jack Roberts an ex WW11 veteran ...her work has to be seen to be believed...she did silk embroidery...rumours around the camp fire when I was a kid was that her heritage was from Japan...

I go out to parties here in Belgium wearing a kimono and hakama, I fell in love with the kimono when I went to Japan in May last year and the Chicago shops in Japan are very good if you don't want to spend too much money and want to find out if kimono is something for you. I sure get weird looks from time to time but I get much more pleasant comments than weird looks. My next trip to Japan will be in July 2025 and I will stuff my suitcase with kimono's as much as I can. And I sure will try to swing by the one with the animal and quirky obi's, those look fantastic!!

The kimono fabric into kitchenware idea is wonderful! I wonder where she'll sell them. Every time I'm in Japan, I intend to be fitted for a masculine kimono, but for some reason there's never the chance. The one the first obi designer wears looks meccha oshare, I crave it!

I have experience wearing kimono for day in Kyoto with my JP GF family. It was end of April, it was very comfortable. 1 use socks could be made of better material

Cathy, your outfit is gorgeous!! I've read comments somewhere (on this channel? maybe not?) even going as far as to say that westerners wearing kimono is "cultural appropriation." Nonsense. Kimono just means "thing to wear," is it cultural appropriation for Japanese people to wear jeans? So silly. You can pick up kimono quite cheaply, and yukata for even less. Do it!
