Kind of a shame to replace the engine when it's running so well. Personally I think the whole "patina' thing is overplayed...would love to see that truck in something like a single-stage teal/aqua color with off-white bumpers and trimwork.

@@PHXez7939 Why not? I've got 30+ year old computers that run fine. The hardware isn't the problem, really -- that can be reproduced or emulated in software; the problem is the proprietary software that runs everything. Unless that gets released into the public domain, it will be very difficult to reverse-engineer. That said, I imagine that there will come the day when gearheads will be able to purchase a cheap generic ECU and the expensive part will be buying the officially licensed software.

I'm sure it will make a good tow vehicle. Back around 1990 a friend bought a 70's Bentley (he still has it) which probable had the same engine. I was amazed at the torque. It would smoke the tyres effortlessly away from the traffic lights. Very undignified, but a lot of fun. The surreal part was that it was almost silent, just a quiet hum and a hissing sound from the tyres.

Looking at one of the Jay Leno vids, I see 'patina' is now quite the thing with some of the old restorations. I think it is done carefully though, with some kind of varnish/sealant to keep it from rusting any further. But, yes, it can look pretty good. The alternative I guess might be to find the original colour (green?) and do a paint job. Both would be fine in my eyes.

My very first truck was a 1966 C30 pickup, and it was a very reliable and rugged vehicle. It had a 250 inline 6, and a SM420 transmission. These C30 Pickups are very rare, because production of the '66 was only around 3,600 units. I doubt that many of them survived. I paid $300 for it in 1985, and sold it in 1999 for $275. I was so impressed with it, I purchased three more 1966 Chevrolet trucks after that C30. I currently own a C10 long bed Fleetside with a 283 and a Powerglide, and a Suburban with a 292 inline 6 and a SM420 transmission. The Suburban sat in the woods for at least 30 years, and I had it running in no time.

Valuable engine, actually. Mercruiser used this engine for a marine application where it was called the Mercruiser 165. Google that. Yes it might take a little more work to get that rear axle to work right anyways as it is offset, and you can see how the original drive shafts are configured to make it work for the offset. The new engine and transmission is going to travel back further so you won't need that much of a reach anyways, the more important thing is how they align with one another, preferably in a straight line, up and down adjustments can be dealt with relatively easily, offsets are more complex.

For the dent on the hood maybe contact one of those paintless dent repair places? They probably can't get it super smooth but getting it close and still being slightly dented may be a good look to go with the patina if that is the way you go with it in the end. Just a thought.

We had a 62 chevy panel at work back in the day. The only good thing on that truck was the 235 they stuffed in it, brakes were SCARY bad. Before that we had a 63 Chevy 1 ton boom truck with a 292 and 4 speed with granny gear. That truck ran great, and even stopped OK for what it was BUT was so slow because it was geared like a Jeep. The van also had a 3 speed trans, horrible, couldn't even get up a slight hill if you stopped and had to get going again. I TRIED to get them to put a truck 4 speed in it when the clutch and trans finally ate themselves but they rebuilt the 3 speed again. Those things need all the gearing and brakes they can get if left mostly stock. your going to give that thing everything it needs to be a dream to tow with and actually stop. Those things had shocks, even my 41 power wagon had knee action shocks on it. It looks like they just knocked off one of them and never bothered to fix it because it was so stiffly sprung and they probably didn't drive it much.

I completely understand your dilemma with the paint. Booth ways would look epic. I think the patina would be the better choice if you lowered it a bit and put slightly wider wheels so you have a bigger patch of tire to put the bigger power to the road.

Paint it! Give it new shiny paint making it look like new, there are already a lot of old cars and trucks with that “patina” on them, a new coat of paint would look gorgeous on it!

Wizard you just have to find a 'Spirit of Ecstasy' for the front of that gorgeous bonnet (hood). She goes with the engine ... Personally I would re paint the truck in whatever colours were on those trucks when new but keep it 'original' externally. The old girl deserves a new coat. Especially as I know you will make that RR engine look beautiful. Respects on a great find Sir.

Sand and paint it. Like milk white or something. Replace that wood. Sandblast all of your parts and paint them. Make that truck museum quality but with that rolls engine. Then take it to shows. People would love it

I have a C30 with the 290ci six and a 10 ft flatbed and duelies on the back. Slow and an absolute beast. Only downside is they don't sell 18 inch tires for cheap.

I would not change one thing about that truck except to make it safe & roadworthy. I started my refrigeration career in 1962 in one of those except it was a delivery, six with three on the column, no power steering or brakes. No A/C & the radio was extra but pretty much unheard of in working trucks. The in cab heater was also extra. Low gear is just about a low, low so the truck could pull. Hitting 50 MPH was a miracle and scary. The rear is low to provide for carrying weight. The bumper is not stock & was added. The compression was pretty low & the HP was pretty low to as back then we never had to go on super highways...as they didn't exist. I hope you keep it the same & just use it for parts pick up and advertising. And the extended bed was rare.

The truck looks nice and coherent as it is. But after you install the RR engine and transmission you need to repaint the truck to retain its coherence. I think white pearl and lots of chrome woud do. In the future you might also restore the planks on the bed. Luxury pickup truck - one of a kind.

With the 2 piece drive shaft, I would consider a stand alone Overdrive unit between the trans and carrier bearing. Keep the 5.+ ratio in the rear for deep down pulling grunt, and Double Overdrive for the highway.

that's a very good idea, if he can make that work that would be a very good option, the offsets are going to have to be dealt with one way or the other, though it may look "easy" for the average person out there just to measure a-b and throw drive shafts in, the original configuration of these original shafts were very specifically engineered with the right geometrical calculations. Engineering a new system that works right is key. Do it wrong and it will wobble and rip everything apart.

Amazing how its in such a good shape for its age and how long its been sitting. I would keep the patina look to preserve its originality. And it looks really cool as it is even with the dents and such. With the RR motor in that, it will be a killer truck for sure.

I'd say leave as is as long as its possible (still need to patch up those rust spots) it just keeps the character of the thing alive. You migt nt know its story, but you see its scars. Besides, you have a shop to run and surely more than enough other jobs/projects to get done. Maybe comes in handy to save the time for those. Just my2cents. Looking forward to whatever you make out of it.

I realize you are making videos of the swap and the work work, but have you considered taking pictures of before, during, and after to see in snap shots of what was and then what is, when its complete? Have you thought about updating the lights to LED's, such as the signal / running lights and the interior lights. Some people have strong opinions against LED headlights, but I think that some people who use aftermarket LED headlights don't bother to get them properly aimed so they aren't blinding everyone they meat on the road.

It's good you're putting the Roller engine in it. I do know the 6.75 litre takes a lot of water to cool it, and about an hour to fill it, has to be done slowly.
