Inspired by...... series of demos. (No 2 Paul Klee)
Oil Paint Transfer (with watercolour)
I recently had an inquiry about this technique, so thought it would make an interesting demo for others to try for themselves. Please note that the samples shown here are just illustrating the method and the end results should not be judged as finished artworks. I would advise anyone to check out the work of Paul Klee if you are not familiar with this artist. As you will see I am using a slightly thicker paper which is designed to work with oil paint, I also use watercolour so the paper needs to be able to handle a lot of water, 250gsm heavyweight mixedmedia paper is used. Frog masking tape is great for using with waterbased paints as it reacts to moisture and seals the edges, although it is not essential. The oil paint transfer paper is just ordinary photocopy paper. (any thin paper will work just as well)
Materials :
Photocopy paper (or any thin paper)
250gsm mixed media paper for use with oil-based paints
Ivory Black oil paint
Watercolour (various)
Frog masking tape.
Rag, pencil, cocktail stick.
Brushes and water.
Method :
To create the oil paint transfer sheet spread a thin layer of black oil paint onto the photocopy paper. I use a paper towel in the demo but you could use a brush, sponge, or soft rag. Do not apply too much paint or this will not work very well and the lines will be too heavy. Place the transfer sheet onto the heavyweight paper and then begin to trace out your composition using a pencil or cocktail stick applying various degrees of pressure to create heavy or light marks. Keep lifting the transfer sheet to check progress. Try a clean composition with simple shapes and lines and try not to overwork at this stage. You can leave this as a monochrome artwork or begin to add colour using watercolour paint. Use plenty of water and a large brush to completely cover the drawing (no need to let the oil paint dry) You will achieve some interesting blurred line effects using this method. Remove some of the paint with a paper towel and add a second colour if needed. This is a great technique to try and I hope you enjoy exploring the possibilities.
Use this method to transfer the artwork onto a canvas. Just draw out the composition on paper then on the reverse use the thin layer of oil paint. It's like a version of carbon copy paper.

Dan, during the covid crisis, I started painting mainly simple abstract things with acrylics (I guess beginner stuff with palette knife). I have been getting all my inspiration/instruction on youtube from artists such as yourself. Your techniques are so interesting and alien to me (that is a compliment). Thank you so much for sharing. I am working on 2 projects inspired by you and I am looking at Klee now who I like very much. I wish you much success in life. Ramon

Hi Dan, thanks so much for demonstrating this technique - I really appreciate it. I'm definitely going to have a go at this today. You have the knack for showing me/us these methods in such an unpretentious & gentle way. Hard to put in to words really. I actually love the fact that you don't talk on your videos - hope you're not offended by that mate! I'm certainly no expert on art but I know what I like & I've been a big fan of Paul Klee for years & have several books about him. I'd never actually seen any of his works 'in the flesh' until about 15 years ago when I visited the mumok in Vienna & I stumbled upon some of his paintings by surprise - I'm not ashamed to say that I shed a few tears. Thanks again Dan.

Thanks for your suggestion, this demo has been really well received and has had lots of positive feedback. I'm sure that many will enjoy discovering this technique and find out a little more info about the work of Klee. I have tried to film demos speaking as I work, but I find them annoying and the voice seems to act as a distraction, If I show some technique in detail and film in close up, I don't feel the need to describe exactly what I am doing. I have had a good response to the lack of talking so won't be changing. Hope you get some good results from this process, It's a great one to experiment with.

Thank you for sharing, Dan. It is inspiring as always. The mixture from hydrophobic and hydrophilic paints has astonishing results. One question: How long does the oil transfer sheet works? (temperature around 20°C, normal air moisture) you made the 3 pictures without refreshing the oil paint on the sheet?
@DanTirels
@DanTirels 4 года назад
Hi Sabine, This is a very simple technique but the results are really interesting and I hope this demo will encourage others to give it a try. The transfer sheet will last for a while and can be reused many times. After each artwork simply smooth over the paint to remove previous marks, add a little more oil paint if needed. You can even let the sheet dry out altogether and just add paint to use again. Hope you have some good results.

@DanTirels

The examples in this demo are painted on paper, it does have a slight grain so has the look of canvas. This would need to be framed behind glass. I think it is advisable to frame any work using watercolour with a protective cover of glass or PVC. I will try to film a new demo of this technique working on canvas. Thanks for the feedback.

No because dragging the watercolour over the wet oil paint creates this blurred line effect.

As everyone says, your videos are inspiring. Thank you for sharing your ideas and techniques. Could I ask please about the surface /paper you’ve used for these Paul Klee inspired works ? And does the surface need any preparation such as acrylic or PVA ? Thanks, Sue

Thank you. For this demo I am using a heavyweight paper (250gsm) that is specifically made for use with oil or acrylic paint and this doesn't require any surface preparation.

Dan Tirels Just googled this type of paper. Arches make a pad of paper for oil painting at 140lb. This doesn’t seem very heavy but will continue to search online. Many thanks for your information 😊 Sue

Thank you for demonstrating this technique!! Could I use acrylic black paint instead of oil paint? Thank you
@DanTirels

It doesn't work with acrylic paint as this dries too fast, the black oil paint could be replaced with oil pastel or something similar.

@@DanTirels I wonder if you could use slow dry for an acrylic transfer? I'm sure the texture would look very different.

How do you keep the black oil paint from marking the entire oil/acryllic paper once you lay it on top?

How did he transfer oil on paper or linen without rotting the surface, to create watercolors?

Use very little oil paint and if possible remove excess oil by mixing on paper, you could leave it to dry a little first.

i love this... but when I tried it my oil paint would smear when i put watercolor on it... maybe i need less paint?
@DanTirels

Less paint but try more water and a soft brush.

I did try it with more water and a softer brush that helped enormously and I also decided to try and use watercolor ink instead of watercolor paint because it's more vibrant I love how it turned out thank you!

Hello Dan. Can I replace oil paint with another type of paint such as acrylic mixed with a retardant or even use carbon paper?
@DanTirels
@DanTirels 3 года назад
I don't think you would get the same effect. The oil paint produces the characteristic features as you paint over with the water-based paint.
