Using improvised art materials when finding supplies unavailable. I wanted to see if this radiator spray paint would make a suitable alternative to my usual primer. The result worked surprisingly well and provided an excellent surface for monoprinting with oil paint. I'm trying out on-screen captions for this demo so you can see the materials I use with a description of the process. (feedback on the captions would be welcome)
It is often frustrating when the only option is to order art materials online and then wait for delivery. My nearest art supply shop has unfortunately had to close due to the COVID-19 pandemic, although it still has an online service which is very good. With this video I wanted to show how you can make use of supermarkets or hardware stores working with available materials including paints and surfaces. Hope it is helpful. Thanks for watching and supporting this channel it is always very much appreciated.
Monoprinting booklet is now back in print and available from the website.

Hi Dan. First, I think the adding of on-screen text, is a wonderful thing. It help one to avoid any pitfalls and offers pointers at various stages. I would like to see the captions as a permanent feature. I like hot colours, simply by changing the amount of red to yellow, produces a very harmonious look to the work.
@DanTirels
@DanTirels 4 года назад
Thanks for the feedback on the captions, still experimenting but I hope they are useful and will try them again, It helps to explain the colours used etc and I'm not sure that everyone reads the long video descriptions, I think brief captions work best and not throughout the whole video. I tried with this demo to show the use of 2 tones of the same colour. I will do this again with 3 tones.

@@DanTirels You're right about not everyone reading your video descriptions. The nice thing about the on screen captions, is that they are relevent to what is going on at the time. They don't get in the way of seeing the work either.

Dan--thanks so much for sharing freely with us---you are so inspirational !!! When you use acrylics---do you use extenders to keep the paint from drying too quickly? If so, which paints & extender combinations have worked best for you?
@DanTirels

I haven't worked with these yet, but I am thinking about filming a demo to explore this further. I have used a silkscreen printing medium that you can add to acrylic paint and this worked very well. (it was Daler Rowney silkscrreen medium)

Thanks, I did like how this worked out and the use of the radiator paint as a primer worked surprisingly well. About titles, that is a very interesting point and it is something that I have only recently begun to think about, I try not to give finished artworks titles such as Abstract No 3, or Untitled composition etc. I like very simple one word descriptive titles and definitely nothing too pretentious. I think the title for this would be something like "Radiation" It radiates a certain warmth because of the colours used and it is ref the primer used.

The on-screen captions are really good, so we don't forget anything. But I like also the materials list. To have everything on the table before to start working helps. I like Dans abstract light hand drawing. I would like to learn that, but how?

Hi there loved your pdf I bought it. Hey where do you get the recycled plastic strips? Also for tissue paper I purchase the kind that you enclose with gifts at the dollar store but I think it might be thinner than what you use. Where do you get that because it looks like you really do apply it several times and it doesn't crumble...?

It is best to leave the paint to dry for a couple of hours, but because this process uses very thin layers of paint it isn't always necessary. Thanks for your positive comments.

@DanTirels
@DanTirels 3 года назад
Thank you. I will always spray works on canvas with an acrylic varnish and framing finished artwork is something that I have made a video of recently, I like wide borders around work on paper so I would always frame smaller artworks in a large frame with a minimum of a 3" border, and use a bevel edge mount if possible. A good tip is to look for frames in charity shops.

Hi Dan! I’m glad the radiator paint experiment worked. I’m wondering what do you “usually use” as a primer?
@DanTirels
@DanTirels 4 года назад
I normally use just a conventional paint primer or spray with a white acrylic. The mono-printing technique works best on a smooth surface so you need to prep the canvas before trying this method. The radiator paint was an excellent substitute.

I'm no expert, but... Students: DO learn mono-printing from Dan T. DO NOT learn spray painting from Dan T!!! Haha! No offense, I *adore* Dan's work, but geez Dan, you are holding the spray can way too close to the work to get an even coat, and you should use thinner coats. Lightly sand in-between coats for an even smoother finish. 💕
@DanTirels
@DanTirels 4 года назад
Thought that would be noticed ! I should explain that I was filming outside and it was a very windy day, the spray was going everywhere except on the canvas. I later re-sprayed this in a more sheltered location (too dark to film) The great thing about this paint is the fast drying time so it is possible to spray lots of thin coats, although sanding was not needed.
