Inspired by........ the wax resist drawings of Henry Moore
During this worldwide crisis, I send best wishes to all viewers and hope that we can all stay positive and get through this. All we can do is hope that a solution is not too far away. Stay safe, look after yourself and those around you, always listen to expert advice and if told to do so STAY INSIDE. Thank you to all those who are working through this crisis and providing vital services in the fight against CORVID-19 wherever you live.
I wanted to create a series of videos that show the techniques of artists who have always inspired me, beginning here with the work of British sculptor Henry Moore. Samples of his wax resist drawings are shown at the start of the video.
I like to film in real-time with no timelapse sequences so although this is a long video it is broken up into 5 different pieces of work.
Method and materials
Drawing 1
Loose sketch with vine charcoal, spray with fixative, draw over with wax crayon (white, yellow) Paint over with diluted acrylic paint.
Drawing 2
Abstract monochrome sketches with charcoal, simple quickly drawn lines, spray with a fixative (you can use hairspray as a cheaper alternative) Draw over the charcoal lines with a white wax crayon. Use a black drawing ink to apply a wash over each sketch. Allow for drying then build up some darker tones.
Drawing 3

This process is so inspiring -- like your monoprinting technique, this requires only the most simple of materiels, yet yields (in your hands) truly amazing art. You demystify the arcane and make it accessible to us. Thank you so much for sharing this and giving a glimpse at your creative process.

Watching this has been the highlight of my day - thanks Dan. There's something very freeing about your work. Difficult to put into words - I want to say it's very punk rock but wouldn't want to offend you. You give someone like me, who isn't very technical art-wise, permission to have a go and I love it, especially at times like now. I get lost in the process and couldn't really care less about the end result. Keep safe mate & thanks again.

Thank you for your positive response to this demo. I'm really pleased that it seems to have had lots of good feedback and I hope it does help to create a few stress free moments for viewers. I will be working on more of these "Inspired by" videos and offering a variety of techniques to explore, I think we do all need that right now. As with all the demos the process and the enjoyment of experimenting is the most important, if you have a good piece of art at the end, that's just a bonus!

I was fortunate enough to come across your mono print video a few weeks ago, I’m hooked! So I was please to find this video today, I find your work inspiring and love the way you demystify process. I have been pleased with the mono prints and look forward to adding this new technique to my experiences. I like the one comment of, “getting loss in the process an not worrying about the results”. I need to do that it the process not the results. Thank you I will keep that in mine. Namaste

Hello Dan, I like your video's very much. The strikes, the colors, your movements. I have 2 Questions. Why don't you draw with black water resistant crayon? And why do you use that terrible brush. I think it gives you something that you like, but I don't know why.
@DanTirels
@DanTirels 4 года назад
I thought someone would notice that brush! I agree it has seen better days, A larger brush would be more use for this work. I have a lot of old brushes used for adding texture. I used the charcoal just because I thought it would be an interesting technique to try. A black wax crayon would also be a good choice.
