Inspiring scientists: Harry Bhadeshia speaks about his life as a scientist. This series of video interviews by the Royal Society celebrates the diversity of British science in partnership with National Life Stories at the British Library.
If you travel from the UK to France via the channel tunnel, your carriage is riding on rails made of a particular kind of steel that Harry Bhadeshia invented. He has also developed the world's strongest armour -- called 'super bainite' -- in part through the discovery of a steel that seemed to sing. He has done all of this and more by applying physics and mathematics to predict what shapes will be made by crystals in metal, under certain conditions and with certain elements added or taken away. He arrived in London in 1970 after his Indian parents were forced to leave their home in Kenya by political changes. As young teenager he has worked his way up from technician, through part-time study, to become the University of Cambridge's Tata Steel Professor of Metallurgy. This is Harry's story.

I had a privilage to meet him when he visited TU Delft. He is truly a giant in ferrous metallurgy, yet he is so modest. A truly inspiring story…

Professor Bhadeshia helped me a lot during part of my PhD, which was done in Cambridge in 1980/81. He is a simple person, affable, very dedicated and a genius of metallurgy. One of the best metallurgists that exist in the world today. It was a privilege to have known him. To this day, I carry out research in steel, inspired by his and Prof. Honeycombe, another fantastic metallurgist.

Nice to hear from you sir, I think, i am in the same situation as you were. Doing research on Ni base superalloys from uni of bham (self funded) during the day and working part time in the night. Anyhow thanks for giving me inspirations.
