Very pleased to see that you can use the Rode Wireless Go with the 360 Mod, without image interference...been looking for this exact use, as all other Channels I've seen so far only test with the 4K Mod or 1-inch Mod...a great overview and looking forward to seeing more about the 360 Mod and the Go...thanks for all your work, great stuff! :)
Another great review, thank you ! Actually, the transmitter body of the Wireless Go set has an in-built omnidirectional capsule of the condenser type. It means the position makes no differences in sensitivity or proximity effect or sound "colour", as long as the sound source (your mouth, in most cases) remains in a virtual sphere of about 30 centimeters relative to the capsule itself. The difference you perceived was... perceived, but not actual. If someones does a blind-test, you shall hardly notice any difference and probably none. And some sounds engineers I know use these microphone sets as back-ups when filming interviews. They've confirmed no change in the global quality of the sound. According to Rode, this choice was driven by the fact they'd be used by unexperienced people, and the probability of the transmitter tilting as the person moves. When connecting a wired external microphone to it, the in-board one switches off automatically, and the pickup pattern becomes this of the connected microphone's capsule. But most of the "lavalier" types are omnidirectional too, as cardioid or hypercardioid are really delicate to adjust and correct in post-production for beginners or aspiring sound techs.
gilles matheron thanks for your comment, some interesting points. I use the Sony ecm-77 for my usual job as a cameraman and this is always mounted upside down to avoid breathing onto the mic and the sound is still good so yes the sphere makes sense. I think ideally I’d like to get a lav mic to connect to the rode as this solves a lot of issues with mic placement and that annoying wind shield. Thanks for watching, Rich
Thanks for the in-depth testing and tips for hiding the receiver on-camera. I've been using velcro in lieu of the cold shoe mount case since I can't seem to get my hands on one. The remote option looks viable. I mostly go lav mic into the tx unit but then I think clipping can occur depending on where you put the RODE during recording - I think a pocket risks some level of disruption. The wind muffs being so vulnerable keeps me using a lav mic. I am surprised you didn't get more interruption in your home and in the woods tests. Look forward to the next video on this subject.
That’s a good point about putting the transmitter in your pocket - could cause interference as you say. There are some better cases available made by smallrig and ulanzi- not sure if they take the 360 mod though, only the 4k mod. Yes the home tests were really surprising - we have a 1940s house so a solid wall is a very solid wall. Thanks for watching
Rode has a short video on how to securely attach the dead cat to the microphone. It is a bit tricky to do sometimes but I found that following their instructions creates a solid connection. However, I prefer to use their lav mic with the dead cat on that. It is a much lighter microphone and does not pull on your clothing like the Rode transmitter unit does (because of weight). Great video!
@@EatSleep360 I should also confess that I purchased a One R for Christmas - actually for my RU-vid channel but my wife nabbed it in the mail and made it a Christmas gift. Very fun and different way to film video - takes some getting used to.
Thanks for sharing. I bought one of these yesterday to use on my insta360 one r. Interesting point about hiding the mic with the 360 mod. I hadn't thought of that. Graham
The Sarmonic radio mic is slim enough to hide in the stitch area but with the Rode you just need to be more creative - shame they couldn’t make it slightly narrower
Keeping the receiver invisible is easy. Just 3dprint a cage with a vertical mount of the receiver. I shared a cage model on Thingiverse and also made a video about it. Thanks for the in-depth review!
I’ll have to take a look at that on Thingiverse - I’ll refer to it in a future video I have coming up on hiding the receiver. Have you got a link to your video? I must buy a 3D printer!!
@@EatSleep360 of course! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XYTrkwBv1F4.html take a look, there is a link in the description to the thing file :)
Rode have a modified wind shield with red markers on the clips ( as opposedto the standard white clips). These dead cats do not drop off & are supplied FOC if you contact their customer support. Great service. Great video.
Your channel is the gift that keeps on giving. I normally use 360 for B-roll but gave the insta360 a go for vlogging yesterday with airpods... ugh. So thought rode wireless go but how to hide it... have you thought about mounting it in line with the camera on the top?
Thanks for the video! I had the same feeling about a windshield of the mic first, but watching youtube videos I found that there is a way to connect it properly (I think all new models has red legs already). It works like a hook and it needs to be pushed with a rotation motion until a click. So now I can hang whole camera on it and it stays on the mic.
A great review, and led me to purchase the same setup, but I get the rode receiver showing in the tops of my 360 videos.. I’m using the ulanzi cage and have even filed the cold shoe so that the unit sits centrally, but still there is a black lozenge floating in all my recordings. Any thoughts on what I’m doing differently? Cheers !
I’ve used it since and the input recording level seems to be a lot better so I think it has improved a lot - there is still a low recording level on other top mics from what I’ve seen.
@@EatSleep360 I've got it myself. Non-powered mics barely work at all. If I feed a Zoom H1N in to it I almost need the maximum output. If I use a Rode VideoMic NTG I need a level of 12 of 15. The Rode VideoMic NTG can record a safety channel which becomes worthless on this camera because with the adapter it is actually only recording the left channel and splitting it. Try your camera with a stereo microphone, you will notice it isn't recording in stereo.
That seems to be great solution for biking! Thanks for that video! Unfortunately whole story gets to be quite expensive: camera and additional mic only because they couldn't do good in-build mic...
Yes I agree - the built in mic will be improved in the future but I don’t think it will ever match the built in mic on the GoPro max. It’s a shame we always need to buy extras with most cameras. Thanks for watching
@@EatSleep360 Fortunately my Garmin Virb Ultra 30 has almost everything: superb mic, great camera, gps for additional features but still... not 360 camera ;)
This is my latest clamp which is really good ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-etuKdoevqQQ.html other than that you can use a manfrotto super clamp which is big but doesn’t move on the handlebars

I work as a location audio engineer for film and tv and I have 2 of these units as well as some Sennheiser G3’s. I thought you did a pretty good job of testing these. I only have a couple of things to add. At 5:15 when you are walking away to the 10m point facing away from the receiver with your body between the receiver and the transmitter there is a drop out. Because the Rode uses a digital system it either works or it doesn’t and I find that as soon as the transmitter gets on the far side of the talent’s body, even at the close range of 10m, reception becomes sketchy and I’ll use the bigger analog Sennheiser transmitter instead. For that reason I avoid using the Rode for anything where the talent is moving around. For pieces to camera, talking head, interviews and panel discussions where you can put the transmitter facing the camera it’s fab. The other thing I’d note is the Rode has an omnidirectional mic so it’s irrelevant which direction that it’s pointing as long as it’s not covered up. I often hide the transmitter by clipping it under the front buttons of a business shirt it next the the skin. Once the shirt is buttoned up it hides the clip and because the mic is on the narrow side of the transmitter it doesn’t rub on the skin or the shirt so there is little to no rustling noise. Thin business shirts are fairly transparent for audio. I have found ties seem to make quite a lot of clothing noise though and in those cases I’ll plug in a lav mic to the transmitter. Thanks for the review and I think I might be getting an Insta360 One R soon. I reckon it’ll be fab on my 3.6m boom pole.
Does it come with a cold shoe adapter to mount to the One R? Or is that a separate item I need to buy. Rode mic sounded really wonderful compared to cameras mic. I’m very surprised at the distance as well. I recently bought the OneR USB-C mic adapter and tried it with a few of my mics laying around but the input volume was so low it was unusable. I really needed a mic preamp to boost. I was also hoping that the OneR would’ve had a volume adjustment for mics. Anyways great video.
Thanks for watching - you need to get the insta360 mounting bracket with cold shoe - the Rode doesn’t come with an adaptor. I’ve heard the input on standard mics is low with the ONE R - also I think volume control on camera with level indicators will be on a future update.
Hi solution to fix rode fur is to attach the fur at its place and give a twist it to right or left. It will hold better. I hope this solution will work for you since it worked for me.
good review again !! mayby a stupid question, this red wireless go is actually made for voice sound. because it filters away a lot except your stwm sound. so is it actually less suitable for the sound of a car or motorcycle? and is this the best solution to the problem of the soft sound with an external mic in combination with insta 360 one r thanks in advance!
The sound of a car or bike can be extremely loud compared to the sound of a voice and so this mic may be too sensitive - ideally in camera you’d be able to reduce the sound input to make it less sensitive but this is unlikely with the insta cameras even though many have asked for it.
Thanks for this. I'm just looking at buying gear for my walks and some interviews of rugby players. Is this camera and mic set up doable with the Inkee falcon plus gimbal?
It’s super lightweight so the size wouldn’t be an issue, you’ll need to mount it on a coldshoe. You do need to plug in the mini Jack cable so just bear this in mind with regard to the camera you are going to use on the gimbal and check which side the socket is. Hope this helps
I have the Insta360 One R cold shoe cage and a Ulanzi One R metal cage with two cold shoe mounts. Both of them do not seat the Rode Go receiver far enough back to hide it when using the 360 lens. How would shortening the cold shoe arm on the Rode receiver work? Either that or filing off the stop on the case to allow the stock Rode Go receiver to attach further back on the case? Trying to remember which side of the One R I can use without getting the Rode in the shot doesn't seem like that workable of a plan to me. :-)
The Rode is wider than the camera so seating back wouldn’t help. Mounting it vertically would make it disappear - take a look at @VRminde comment below. Remember you can still get a lot of third person floating shots with the rode on top by reframing the shots to point away. The Ulanzi triple cold shoe is a really good solution as shown in the video.
I ended up finding someone local with a 3D printer after watching this video--problem solved. :-) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XYTrkwBv1F4.html
Well, you convinced me to get it. It is definitely worth it. I wonder why action cams don't build this in? It would be nice to not need to hide a reciever
Hello... Eat Sleep 360... Is the mic adapter still working with the One R after the last firmware update? I have the Rode Wireless Go II and get no sound. Can you test your One R and let us all know. A few of us are having the same issue. It shows the mic is attached but there is no sound when reviews. Thanks for the great videos!
@@EatSleep360 I don’t know why but the wind noise reduction needed to be turned off. Thank you so much for replying. Keep up the great reviews and get yourself a Rode Wireless GO II. It would make a good review and is a great duel channel multi-person mic. Again thank you and keep up the great work!
I do think the internal mic is a lot louder than the wireless mic go. The quality of trhe go sounds a little better like it is cutting out room noise better.
Great review as usual. Is it possible to mount the receiver on the Insta360 ONE R where when shooting 360 video it doesn't protrude out of the stitch line, and when you have a dead cat installed?
Thanks, again a nice video from you! What about the airpods or similar headphones via bluetooth? I tried it but there is a bit clicking sometimes and also a little time delay between picture and voice. Hope there will be a update which helps, because this could be a easy solution if you don´t need big distances. I`m also searching for a bluethooth microphone which is waterresistant for use on the motorbike´s sound (without wind noise).
My son has the AirPods Pro but it’s only AirPods 1 and 2 that work properly at the moment. Getting good sound on a motorbike is tricky because of the speed.
I'm trying to hook up my insta 360 one r to a mic. I have an adapter from Amazon that's supposed to be only for the one r. My lavalier mic is a trs, so i got a trs to trrs adapter. When I plug the 3 pieces in ... the plug for one, trs to trrs adapter, mic .. the microphone shows up on my screen, but it kills all sound in recording. Dead silence. What's wrong?? I've ordered the rode go ii, should get that next week. How do i hook that up, being a trs??
Great video and very informative. I just wish I could get my newly acquired Rode Wireless Go to work with my One R. It works fine on my Canon DSLR. But with the One R it's distorted at maximum volume and at the two lower levels still needs tweaking in Premiere Pro to get it sounding remotely good. And then still isn't as clear as when it's attached to the DSLR....Hmmm
A lot have had issues with the Go and one r with more recent camera updates - so annoying as when I used it with the older firmware it worked really well. I need to test it again with recent camera firmware.
@@EatSleep360 That's kind of reasureing to know. Though hopefully they fix the firmware that being the case. I was about to buy another insta360 adapter thinking it maybe that at fault as the Canon camera doesn't require any adaptor. The audio with the One R just doesn't sound as crisp and only using Premiere Pros's EQ sound, enhancing the voice etc could I get it anywhere near acceptable. Otherwise it sounds like your taking through a thick jumper. Thanks for your reply and keep up the good work. Your videos helped me choose the One R and I love that camera.
@@EatSleep360 Thank you so much. I am in my 50's trying this camera or 360 for the first time. I want to capture family trips. The learning curve can be steep. I just need to practice every day.
The Shoop no problem- yes practice a lot - even if it’s in the garden or in the house. Get used to the menu and where you have to stand to get the best shots. The more you learn the more fun you’ll have with it on holiday because you won’t have to think about it so much. When recording video my biggest tip is keep the clips short even 30 sec or a minute at a time. This will make it so much easier to edit. Any longer and you’ll have sooo much footage and you just won’t get around to editing it. 👍🏼
Eat Sleep 360 awesome thank you. I tried the star lapse last night. A bit of a failure , I’ll keep trying till it’s perfect,,, thank you for information and the work you put into it all.
Hey mate, so when you plug in the rode mic does it record the sound from the rode to your video file on the camera? I am having this problem where I plug in the mic and the icon shows up and the levels etc, but when I go play the video in the editing studio the sound is from the onboard mic on the insta 360. Maybe it's supposed to be that way and you just add the sound in from the rode and sync it up, I have no idea so I thought I'd ask as I am struggling to get it to work with my insta360. I have the mode set to 'merged' on the rode and I am using 2 mics.
With the rode wireless Go it records straight to camera. The mic icon only indicates that the cable is plugged in and you can’t see any levels on the camera which is annoying. There may be a different setting on the rode 2 because I know that can record to the actual mic as well so check to see what other settings there are on the mic itself. It should be plug and okay so it’s either a cable issue or a settings issue on the mic. Hope this helps.
I didn't quite understand how you mount the transmitter onto the one r using the cold shoe mount... How do you get the cold shoe mount on the one R case? I don't seem to have that on my one R... Is that an adapter that you have to buy separately or? I intend to use the wireless mic with a simple mic which is built into my helmet now.. your review on the quality is right on time as I want to buy the wireless go...
Thanks for your comment - with the last major update in April the external mic adaptor was improved so maybe the videos were shot before then. I haven’t tested the adaptor with a standard mic but with the wireless Go it is clean as you can hear.
Great video! After watching this i bought a reode wireless go. İ've connected it to my one R via mic adapter. But the sound is horrible agaiın. Because it still gets the audio also from the camera. The backround noise is terrible. What am i doing wrong? İ would be glad to have some solutions on my problem🙏🏻
I haven’t experienced this before, usually the mic replaces the internal mic sound. Some people have had problems with third party mic adaptors so make sure you have an insta360 adaptor or one you know is compatible- I would put a post and sample clip on the one r Facebook group and tag insta360
I need your help once again Sir. I have been using Boya wired lav mic with the mic adapter on the 4k mod for around 7 months and it was working fine as I'm low on budget to invest on Rode wireless go. But lately I am facing lots of distortions when I use the setup while driving cars. Lots of noise and vibration sound is being recorded. The whole footage is getting ruined as I make car review videos. What should I do to correct it. Is the mic adapter damaged or the mic itself is damaged I have no clue. But when I use the mic normally while walking or making vlogs it just works fine.
If it was working ok before then it will either be the mic, camera, adaptor or you’ve changed a setting. Try the mic with a different camera or with your phone and see what the results are. You just have to swap things around and try and eliminate what it is. Sounds like it’s overloading - have you adjusted the mic sensitivity - try and reduce it if you can. Hope this helps
@@EatSleep360 The mic is working fine with phone. Even the internal mics of the camera itself is working okay. I tink the mic battery is the issue. I will replace it and try once. If it works than good. If not than I have to change the adapter I guess as I have tried a different lav mic and it worked fine with the camera. I hope the camera is not damaged 😒
My One R's biggest flaw is that it won't record in stereo when using external audio sources (tried Rode Micro, Rode Video Pro Plus). Insta sent me a second microphone adaptor and still records in mono. Do you think something is wrong with my camera? None of the RU-vidrs appear to have this issue.
I think this mic with a separate lav mic that plugs into would be best. You could then place it in the helmet somehow. The rode mic on its own would be tricky to place in the helmet and you couldn’t rely on the windshield - it would blow away for sure. I would buy a lav mic and permanently wire it into the helmet - then you just plug in the rode transmitter and you’re ready to go. Not sure where the best place is for the transmitter, you’d have to experiment.
Eat Sleep 360 I wear a Shoei Neotec II with the integrated sena mic wired in. Maybe there’s a way to get a quality recording with it. I haven’t tried yet, but have the one r on order and this video gets me excited. Even if not on the motorcycle but just with use on my Insta360 Pro 2 :)
How sturdy would this be to setup on a motorcycle? The receiver doesn’t look that secure nor does the wind shield - can you rubber band the windshield down?
The receiver clips in place and is pretty secure but the wind shield sucks and yes that what I do is use a rubber band. I’m not sure if the version 2 is any better.
@@EatSleep360 Can the Mic module be used without the receiver to just capture sound direct to the internal recorder which can by synced in post later? I basically am trying to capture wind free sound from my Ducati motorcycle that I can sync up with the insta360 footage as the in-camera mic is absolutle garbage in wind.
@@EatSleep360 There is a cable that splits signal to left and right channel, so then you can connect to that two mics. Later in the editing software you can mux both channels to normal stereo track.

Hi. I need the ingredients for that chocolate monkey! In the fairness of sharing and caring; my favourite cocktail is a coat hanger: 2x ice cream scoops. 4x Baileys. 2x Amaretto. 2x coffee lacquer. With a sprinkle of coco power. The end result is similar to an eggnog, but its Mmmmmmmmmm. Anyway; The Rode is a very great place of kit. The way action cameras are developing, I have always wondered why do manufacturers bother wasting space within a small box, putting a crap mic inside. The max has 5 mics, which could make some people go wow! But, most action cameras, especially 360 cameras, will be at the end of a pole. The camera could have the best mic money can buy, but if its 3m away, its going to suck! MIC TIP! Point the mic downward! This works for both the Rode transmitter and any mic that is plugged into it. This will stop you from popping your peeeeee's! 😏 Like how you hid the receiver- cool stuff!
Ray Hollands yes when I mount tie clip mics I usually do this for interviews but with the Rode Go I think you’d lose too much level but it’s a good point. I’m used to wearing a normal clip mic but having a block on your top gets a bit of getting used to -made lots of school boy errors 😂.
Ray Hollands oh and your cocktail sounds lethal compared to my tame chocolate monkey (one small banana, table spoon peanut butter, teaspoon pure cocoa nibs, table spoon oats, two table spoons chocolate protein powder, and 2-300ml milk) 😋
@@EatSleep360 It's more a special occasion kind a drink and you only need a wee dram! 😀 Still very Mmmmmmm thou - thanks for your more healthy-er ingredients list. Peanuts could still count as part of your 5 a day, so therefore peanut butter is in!
Eat Sleep 360 same here. They sent me out a replacement set with a “red colour bottom” but it still did not fix it. When I did my review of the mix this was and still is my only complaint. Otherwise it is awesome and I do use it with the Lav. Side note. Thank you for your videos.
@@EatSleep360 To be frank, 200m is only something that would be suitable in very very few situations - Sky diving, ATV type of open fields, Racing in tracks to capture audio of two individuals who would be racing each other... I think the most important thing is having 200m capacity would mean that it has an easier time when obstructed in close quarters. Definitely something that you could make a video, id be curious how much it takes so that it no longer transmits, how thick of a wall .
Have you tested the InstaMic Pro bluetooth microphone with the Insta360 One R? If not, can you please test it? I emailed InstaMic and they tell me that it does work with the One R.
