Growing on Instagram with reels is a bit different but not impossible! I grew my account to 150K in just about a year using primarily reels and it's all about providing quick value (less than 30s) to your audience. The algorithm doesn't start to pick up on your videos and hit the explore page until about 1-2 weeks after posting and only compiles as you keep posting more to your page. Tiktoks algorithm will pick up on your videos almost immediately and die off after 3 days then pick up again for a second wave after a few weeks. Watch time, shares, and comments are most important for reel/Tiktok post growth. I haven't tried the paid feature for reels yet though.

My biggest problem with IG in general, not just Reels is that I see more from people I don't follow than people I do. I can honestly say that I don't think I've ever seen one of your reels. I assumed you didn't make them.

At this point I just hate Instagram. I post there from time to time but only things I would do anyways. I will not produce special content for Instagram and will not try to play the algorithm game anymore. especially if you are a small creator like me it feels like if they really punish you for that. And I hate it that everything is irrelevant after 2 days. On RU-vid you can put out videos that can still be valuable 2 years after. Thanks for the insides Evan!

Outside of monetization, how effective is it to use secondary social media platforms (whatever they may be for a given creator) to drive traffic to the primary social media platform? Like, for me, my primary platform is RU-vid and I'm trying to use TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter to drive traffic to my YT channel. Thoughts?

I did the bonus thing and was demonetized immediately for violating community guidelines, and i didnt even post anything inappropriate.it was a dance reel using a song IG recommended. lol

Besides the pop ups, how did you know you had this option to opt in? My account shows that I'm approved to be monetized...but haven't had this pop up or any additional options under my "Creator" section in my settings. It's an interesting incentive, a couple hundred dollars every so often could be worth it for some people, especially if like you said people will post the REELS anyway. But totally agree, RU-vid is way better long term option. Thanks for sharing your thoughts & experience.

I think you were lookin at the wrong section. There’s a monetization section and a bonus section… it should show up on ur bonus tab in the settings.

I just don't get on IG for videos... do a couple catch my eye here n there? Sure, but I literally only watch 2-3 a day if that even. By contrast I can spend hours scrolling through random pictures that interest me!

If you're just leveraging content with little extra effort, seems reasonable to participate in case Reels does pass Tik Tok eventually. Not much downside, although Insta has become annoying by pushing unwanted content at users.

1:53 comparing Reels to RU-vid videos is definitely not the same thing. I posted a 3 second before and after on my instagram and it's currently at 1.8 million views which earned me a good amount of money. Would not be able to do that for a RU-vid video.

Once you sign up for Bonus with Reels, IG will stunt your reach for Reels. In my case, I was averaging 1,000+ likes and 40k-2m views, then I sign up and I can't even get 5k views lol.. They don't really want to pay.

I think many creators kinda burn themselves out a bit with this. Especially new creators, or with small channels and accounts trying to grow feeling they have to create more and faster, forgetting about the creative process. In any case, really enjoyed your reels, hope to see more of them. Cheers!

I get paid 3 cents per 1000 views on tiktok, it is so low! One month, i got 7 million + views and only made $260

I think TikTok has improved quite a bit. I'm seeing great photography/videography content on there now. I always heart and follow the creators I like and click Not Interested on the garbage. This has improved my algorithm quite a bit.

Honestly, I dont find it all that bad. Im getting paid via youtube, ig reels, and facebook reels right now. And between all of them, I make a few hundred bucks a month. Along with that comes the new followers(possible clients) and the fun of getting paid for something I have complete control over and operates on my schedule. Its not for everyone, but is for me.

@@forzaitalia5111 a lot of people say that don’t get invited again. I’ve been invited many times now fortunately and it just sends me the notification to join the bonus again. It’s not automatic. Typically I get the notification for the new one immediately after the previous ends.

Interesting....IMO time is ticking on IG's demise and reels is their last ditch effort to try and save their platform. Problem is its just forcing people to create a ton of content they dont really care about in order to please the algorithm and try to grow. Soooo much "run of the mill" or "phone it in" type content out there that isnt even remotely interesting

This is probably just my social bubble of people in their 40s, but I don't know anyone who uses ig and wants reels in ig or in their feed. Most people seem to be pretty aggressively against them. If that isn't just my bubble, maybe that's partially why? Also, not knowing your hourly rate, that seems like you probably put more than an hours work into those reels and made less than an hour's worth of time for it. Unless you're bored or find them fun and personally rewarding to make, seems like a bad use of time.

My bonus is $1,200 with 11.02 million plays. After I hit the $100 mark it’s been really had to get more bonuses. I would say I get like around $0.5 per thousand views.

Don’t get me wrong. It’s cool to get paid. But as a photographer I really don’t give a crap about reels. I want to see photographs! I think if someone can create the next instagram/type app but with just photographs that you can actually upload in hd, share etc.

It’s actually pure randomness some accounts with 100k accounts don’t get invited and accounts with 1k followers do it’s a waiting game since it’s at beta stage all the platforms are currently figuring out what’s the right monetary value for short form content imo it should be decently fair enough to be atleast making 1k a month for short form content but for long form content all eyes on deck with that

Why don’t you just use reels/tik tok and make a sort of commercial for your YT videos. Your already editing the video so could easily cut together a few clips. Just view it as easy bonus money. Probably under estimating the effort required.

Honestly I prefer the RU-vid stuff over reels. I mindlessly scroll through reels when I’m bored and just nothing better to do. They all seem to be the same with different people doing the same thing. The lip sync stuff is a waste of time to watch for me. Idc to see someone lip sync. I like useful content and while I do like seeing the creators on there, most of it is pointless. However, I will watch anything you post because no matter what it’s usually inspiring or informative 😬

I am not sure abt the audience in the US, but if you see Indian geography based reels (and we do command one of the biggest populations on the planet), you will see shitty cringy reels gaining million views. Immediate turn off for people like me but supposedly liked by the masses I guess. E.g. you have a following of 150K and your quality posts are 100x better than many accounts here which post their cringy dance stuff and show dumb things like "Top 4 ways to save on travel -> don't go anywhere" and have a following of more than 500K. You would ask, why use Instagram?

What I can't figure out it how they determine how much to pay per view. It seems some months I get 250k views and make $250 and others I get 30k views and make $150. Not sure if anyone can provide further details on how IG calculates the per view dollar amount on different videos. Also I posted a reel on IG and FB, it got 7k view on IG but 5mil on FB and I didn't get paid on any of the FB views.

This is my first month that they reached out to me! Hope it goes well. It’s been a day and I posted a video and it got like 4k views in a hour or so, and the pay out was already $27. It’s paying WAY better than tiktok. Tiktok pays TRASH. RU-vid shorts is fairly good too. But again, I’m so surprised that Insta is paying a good amount. Dont let this opportunity pass yall. Trustttt.
