Install a RV Roof Top A/C Unit on a Forest River Pop Up Camper Tent Trailer

A comprehensive video overview of the installation of a Dometic 13, 500 BTU Brisk Air II RV rooftop air conditioning unit on my Forest River Rockwood 2280 pop up camper tent trailer.
This install video is essentially identical for all pop up campers made by Forest River over the past 15 years that have the built in factory roof bracing to support the heavy a/c unit.
I am sure this install video is also applicable to other brands of pop ups and even for travel trailers too. Check your manufacturer specs before beginning.
I personally chose to install a Dometic Brisk Air II but if you want to install a Coleman or an Advent unit the procedure is the same.
The powering requirements for the install require a minimum #12 AWG wire and 20 amp breaker. Most pop ups should have a sufficiently sized shore power cable to accommodate the electrical load of the a/c and converter. Most campers should have the 20 amp breaker pre-installed from the factory.

*Works so well **Fastly.Cool** that it only requires daytime operation until high temp and humidity are overnight. It is difficult to get to side filters, but back is easily accessible.*

Purchased: August 2023 - still works GREAT!I ru-vid.comUgkxxsUnXhGsSJLim_XnMHyQK0u3XVaW-CGn live in a studio and during the summer it gets scorching hot - really old building with no ac units. I can’t express how EASY it was to install. This unit has been a life savior during the summer and some days during other seasons where it can still be a bit warm at night. In this small place is my friend, a husky, poodle mix and myself. We need AC - lolI don’t use the dehumidifier option - I’m not sure if it will leak in my house, since I did not install the small draining hose that came with it. May look into it late but I don’t worry about much humidity in the apartment. I don’t understand why the negative reviews since all things mentioned, I personally did not find issues with. Definitely worth it!

+Raul Calzadilla thanks for the kind words. I'm "anal" about everything so if I'm going to show people how I do things then they'd better grab a seat b/c my vids (especially ones like this one) are exceptionally long. Can you explain why the need to rum AC unit power to out side plug then run power cord from outside back to inside? Could it be wired inside without the need to do inside to outside then back to inside?
@IQD4me
@IQD4me 4 года назад
@@bevinsracing Agreed. He was very precise with his instructions and his attention to detail, but there was no need to cut a hole in the side of the roof to run the wire outside. If he would of just used that pass through flexible wire cable he could've run that directly to his power source on the inside of the camper.

Thanks for the video! I plan to install the exact same unit in my school bus I'm converting to an RV. Most important thing is the 1.5" distance between the ADB and the A/C unit. I was hoping to simply mount it directly to the thick sheet metal for the roof but your instructions show me that's a bad idea. I'll install 2x2 framing on the inside around the hole before I install the unit so everything fits properly.

Hey Brother! I just installed a 15000 BTU Dometic A/C on my 2004 Fleetwood Tacoma. I cannot thank you enough for the great tutorial. My family live in South Eastern VA and we have been limping along with an 8,000 BTU portable A/C. The RV dealer wanted $1590 for a/c and install. I just completed it for $685! You posted the perfect video!

Adam you're most welcome! Glad you managed to get it all installed properly. Yeah everything is all labor when it comes to installing one of these things. $689 USD? Man when the Canadian dollar was parity with the US greenback that would've been a steal for us Canadians. They're quite expensive for just the unit up here.

MY MAN!!!! You just saved me a load of hassle/money. I am a new owner of a used Forest River, too. So the AC stopped working, and I replaced the capacitor hoping that was my fix (which was near impossible to find a compatible one). When it first stopped working it was something like a struggling startup, and wasn't doing anything. Then it just would not turn on at all. Troubleshot everything I could see/poke around with. Finally gave up on fixing the old one. So I was thinking of buying a Dometic as replacement for the ~15 year old unit up there. And found your video for doing an install, and thought it looked perfect. You did a wonderful job of being thorough, and providing insight into every consideration throughout. So you got to the bit about the breaker box. (I always assumed there should be one, and even asked the guy I bought it from. He said there was not one and the brown box under the seat was just the heater unit.) So I saw you get down there and open it up, and I said, "That's probably it!!!!!" So I ran out, saw the switch was OFF, and plugged everything up out there....BOOM AC!!!!! I'd also not looked much below the seats as we've only been using that area as a travel crib spot so we didn't even move the table/cushionis. All that to say, you rock!! Take my subscribe and like! Thanks so much, and keep up the high quality videos!
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 4 года назад
wow talk about luck on your part that you found this video and discovered a breaker panel! Had you not known you would've replaced your AC unit for nothing and still have issues with no power. Good on your for doing your research. Hopefully the guy you bought the trailer from was a good deal.

Thank you very much for the great video. I completed the installation on my 2017 Flagstaff 625D without any problem thanks to your video. I have a couple of suggestions to help others. +Sam Robinson congratulations on your new pop up! You'll have lots of fun with it! My videos are recorded the way they are with intense details because what value does it bring the viewer to omit the small details on doing a PROPER install??? The devil is ALWAYS in the details and it blows my mind why other RU-vidrs omit so much of it. That's not how I roll and thus make crazy long but details videos to walk my viewers from start to end and not have them scratching their heads wondering what step they may have missed! Good luck with your install and may you have many memorable trips in your camper :) Thanks for watching.

@tomcoyan1730
@tomcoyan1730 2 года назад
Fiscally, this is the best RU-vid video I've watched! The dealer quoted me $2200 for an installed 13.5K AC unit. I went to etrailer and bought a 14.5K unit with controller for $800. You literally saved me $1400!! I watched several other videos here, but until I watched yours (at least half a dozen times) I wasn't confident I could install this myself. It turns out Forest River had already installed the circuit breaker and junction box, which made things go much easier. My only issue is that they did NOT put the screw in the right place. I drilled up through the screw hole, right into a wood support! Should have checked with my stud finder first. Anyway, thanks SO MUCH for posting this. I am in your debt!
@piercedasian

I'm SO SO glad to continue seeing people benefit from my video. I never actually intended to do a video on this but figured that RV dealers are mostly shams and charge WAAY to much for something that can be done by the average Joe in a single afternoon. I'm so glad I decided to document what would've been an otherwise "typical saturday" for me. Nuts that Forest River put the screw in the wrong spot. Fortunately, the distribution box will cover any minor boo boos you may have made on the interior roof panel so no harm done. Good job on the install and may you have many years of icy cold a/c days with your newly installed unit!

Was looking for a video before tackling my own install on a TT and initially skipped this one because of length. Good thing I circled back. Your video was very thorough and informative. I'll be referencing it during my install. Thanks
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 5 лет назад
ah, smart person you are! When I made this video I was quite worried about the length as people's attention span is usually less than 5 minutes. This video I can 100% absolutely say with certainty is the most comprehensive install video found on the Internet and for good reason - you only get to do it right once and if you screw up its going to cause you some serious problems. Most of my videos are quite long and detailed and quite verbose but it is because I'm trying to make sure my viewers don't mess up and have a successful install/fix or whatever I'm trying to teach them at the first go. Thanks for circling back to watch it and thanks for liking it! Good luck with your install.

+carbonhead T glad you liked my video! I can't tolerate extreme temps. In the winter I hate cold, in the summer extreme hot makes me grumpy so the only way to make yourself happy on a limited budget is to do it yourself :) I'm quite anal about things especially when I'm working with "new" things. That a/c unit wasn't cheap - they're insanely expensive in Canada but I lucked out on this one b/c the dealer wanted to move some inventory. He offered to install it but at a cost of $500-600 labor that was out of the question especially when it was so easy to do. I have done another trailer after I did my own and the install time was shortened by 25% b/c I know what to expect and didn't have to be as "cautious". Best investment ever. Should I ever decide to sell my pop up that I can take the a/c unit off and put in either a skylight vent or something in its place and install the a/c unit onto my future travel trailer. It truly is THAT easy to pull off...

I considered the window mounted a/c approach too but since I have a Rockwood 2280 that I purchased in pristine condition that I wasn't willing to start hacking away at the sidewalls just to get a/c that might cause issues with my trailer later down the road. Going the rooftop route IS the proper approach. Expensive yes but considering how long a/c last and how relatively inexpensive they are in the USA that there isn't a reason to not install a rooftop unit. In canada they're CRAZY expensive but in the US you can have the entire setup for less than $800 all in. Easy install and honestly I spent more time working the electrical than I did the cutting or mounting of the actual unit. It's been 2 summers now and my a/c unit stills chuggs along as good as the day I installed it!

I was watching your video because i'm considering installing a unit on my enclosed race car trailer and then I saw your red crx. Nice car!

glad you were able to find my video and I'm even more glad that you noticed the CRX! It is mostly a garage queen these days as I hardly drive it after putting it through a near full restoration process over 12 years ago.

lol glad you liked the video, the CRX and the camper. The CRX is a garage queen and while I do drive it every so often but I try my best to drive when there isn't traffic to avoid rock chips or dumb drivers b/c one hit and that thing would be written off.

I want to personally thank you for taking the time to produce this video, your instructions were so clear, consice and detailed that I was able to take everything that I needed with me and do my install at a remote site where my camper is set up. I was able to go from A through Z without missing anything and the project was complete in 4 hours. Again, my site is remote and totally off grid so to be able to accomplish this in one shot was very unexpected. I am so thankful that I would happily send you a check for $100.00, just shoot ma an address where I can send it.

Scott You’re most welcome and I am so glad you were able to complete the entire job in one shot. Doing it at a remote site is even more impressive! Immensely appreciate the offer to send funds my way! As always, all donations are graciously accepted. If you want my email address is piercedasian@gmail.com if you want to mail funds using more traditional methods just drop me a private email and I can provide it you that way. A million thanks. Donations like yours always helps me invest back into my channel to continually try to provide the best content possible to all my viewers.

I’m going out on a limb and guessing you have done this before! Great video, all the attention to detail makes for a very clean after market installation that looks factory.

If you'd believe it, this was the FIRST kick at the can. I was determined to NOT pay the rip off RV dealer for the install and I did a ton of research on my pop up camper before starting. I took my merry time and I've always been a really logical thinking that takes a pragmatic approach to solving problems. I'll admit I was impressed with my own work b/c it went without a single snag. Patience, having the right tools and taking your time was key.

you can do if you take your time and do some careful planning. Just watch my vid a few more times to really understand what I'm doing and then try it yourself. You can't really mess up if you use common sense to do the job and take your time. Get a helper, it does make a HUGE difference having an extra set of eyes with you. My 2nd a/c install took HALF the time compared to the one you saw here.

Very informative video, you can see that you are somewhat of a perfectionist when you are working. My Aircommand Ibis is being installed by a friend who is an RV Workshop manager however I am looking forward to giving him a hand. I live in Australia but I have a Swift UK touring caravan, just not looking forward to lugging it up to the roof level. Thanks for the video it was really good. Happy Travels from downunder. Tony.

Glad you liked my vid. If a little weakling like myself can get it up onto the roof with no help then I'm sure two people could do it quite easily. Just make sure you got some good solid ladders and take your time. Nothing worse than dropping your brand new shiny a/c unit and destroying it.

lol, glad you liked my video. Watch for rain? yes indeed. It is the small details that make a difference and where I am from sudden CRAZY downpours can happen in a span of just 30 minutes if you're not paying attention to the weather. That would suck if it rained and you had this giant 14" by 14" hole!

I installed my unit today. I found your video to be very helpful! My only concern is the seal between the gasket and the roof. I made every effort to avoid any problems but still had a leak from condensation on the roof coming in from the gasket. I tightened the bolts about two more turns and am keeping my fingers crossed.
