2017 Ram 2500HD Backup Camera Kit: www.infotainment.com/products...
Partial Transcript:
Today we upgrade our visibility by installing a backup camera to our stock radio.
Just to add a quick update, the truck still has its beloved parasitic draw. Unfortunately, the TIPM didn't fix the issue, but we have something else in store in an upcoming video.
However, today we'll be installing this - a truck tailgate handle backup kit from
Infotainment.com!
And the best thing is that it completely works with your stock Ram radio - yes, even this small one!
There are a couple different options: the genuine Mopar one and this one - the aftermarket OE style, which, according to Camera Source where this originates from, has better picture quality than stock. The only thing it lacks over the genuine Mopar part is the dynamic grid lines... Pssshh, but who needs those?
And this beefy harness is where the magic happens - it intercepts the factory plug and merges in the signal from the camera. Keep in mind that the radio will still think it has a stock camera - we're just negating the need to fish around and re-pin harnesses, and such, other places in the vehicle.
Infotainment has a great installation video, which I'll link to here... and in the description. This is not a replacement video, but just my experience because, well, things happen when I do these projects and I want to share my mishaps just in case they help you along faster when you get stuck.
First we'll start at the back and get this handle installed.
We’ll remove this access panel so we can gain access to the handle mechanism.
Inside here, we’ll unlatch these red plastic locks for the latch-release rods.
This one is a little stubborn, so I’m going to use a thicker glove so I can press harder to get it to release.
There we go.
Now we’ll release the wiring harness. It would be best if we could remove it from the tailgate so we could unlatch it easier. I found that sliding the harness this way releases it from the sheetmetal and now we can easily press the lock and unplug it. The lock is on the other side of the plug. Why do all of these work differently?
We’ll go ahead and remove the latch by removing these two nuts. And we’ll move this aside for now.
The handle should come right out now. I’m having to work it through a bit. Got it.
Let’s go ahead and swap out the lock from this old handle into our new one.
My truck is a few years old now, so this lock is dirty and could use some lubrication. While we have it out, I’m going to spray a bit of this lock lube in to help freshen it up. And then we’ll install it on our new handle.
There we go, now doesn’t the look just swell?!
Let’s prepare to install the release mechanism back into place on our new handle.
And, of course, I dropped one of the nuts. Ahh…. Where on earth did it go?
Found it! These magnetic wands are awesome.
Ok, back to tightening these down.
Ahhhhhhhh! Got it!
Let’s go ahead and plug this harness back in. And then we’ll slide it back onto the plastic mount to hold it against the sheetmetal.
And then we’ll go ahead and lock these rods back into place. Aaaaaand there!
Now we’ll start routing the wiring safely around all these moving parts and back towards the bottom of the tailgate. We’re going to follow the factory wiring harness for now.
I’m having trouble feeding this to the bottom of the tailgate because my hands are too big. So I’m going to tape this to the end of my magnetic tool and fish it on down to the bottom.
Now we’ll go back and carefully attach our new wiring to the factory wiring with some of these zipties.
Let’s go back to the other end and feed this into the body of the truck bed. Hey, look - there’s a hole that will work perfectly!
Before we continue, let’s make sure the tailgate operates correctly. Ah, and here we have our first issue! The tailgate is not latching properly. Now, don’t freak out - it’s ok. This is why we’re testing it before moving on. Let’s take a look back inside to see if we can find the problem.
Upon inspection here, I can see that the latch is not returning properly. I’ll try a bit of lubrication first. Hmmm… this is still not working properly.

Real Squatch Pick Ups only have a solid 1-piece tail gate, none of that sissy, city boy, drop down, 3-piece, also serves as a shoe shine seat contraption ! ! ! Great work sir.

🤣 My mind is not ready for the origami tailgates yet - I just need a metal flap that closes and holds my crap in. Thank you for your feedback, Calvin!

You should look into finding a 8.4 or 12in radio. Youd love it. Can't wait for your next video, wonder what that draw is

Hi, Steven! Oh, you are so close - I do have something on order, but it'll take some time to get here. 😁 Thank you for your comments. I hope to have a solution soon, or my resolution may be to permanently carry around a jumper pack. 🤭

Impressive. I’m always fearful I’d tear up the dash. I added a dc-dc charger on my RAM. It is a tedious procedure to run two pair of heavy cable and keep it safe from moving parts and heat.

Hi, Terry - valid concern! I do tend to break tabs and latches on plastic interior pieces quite regularly, and this time was no exception. You'll notice that the right-side vent falls out of the bezel as I make the final removal. Yup, a plastic tab broke. Usually things go back together pretty well as there is redundancy built into the trim pieces. I agree - we were battling a similar adventure with cable routing!

Will your OBD Genie update my 2014 software for same model radio? Local dealer said that's impossible to get video on it. That even dealers can't do that.... I felt completely lied to. Magically, I see this video ;) thnx

Hi, rdt5. Instead of the programmer like I used in the video, I would start out by using the Appcar DiagFCA program ( appcar-diagfca.com/en/ ) and a compatible USB to OBD2 cable (I use the Vgate vLinker FS USB cable). This will allow you to look into the options you can change, but noting that not all options will apply. Basically, that programmer I used in the video is just toggling a couple settings that you can easily click on in the program. Now, from what I remember, the display for that generation of Ram was actually in the rearview mirror, as so I had a couple people tell me recently. I think the best route is to call Infotainment and ask what options you have for upgrading to a backup camera. They should be able to tell you where the display is (rearview or radio) and what parts you need to purchase to get that to work. Maybe it's a radio upgrade or perhaps a rearview mirror - I'm not sure. This goes pretty deep and there's more to this story, as dealers can even change your sales codes to make your vehicle look like it came with a certain feature and they can load all the correct settings based on that additional set of sales codes. I'll try to post a video on that eventually, but that'll be a ways out. Hope this helps a bit and feel free to post back your progress or what Infotainment recommends. We're all in this community together and they are shared interest in knowing how this might work out in you truck! 😎

Okay so I got the obd genie, is there a certain camera I need to get or can I just order one off ebay?
@BigfootDadExploresMontana
@BigfootDadExploresMontana Год назад
Hi, Manman horton. From the way I see the vehicle operating, the OBD Gennie simply enables the video input in the back of the radio to broadcast onto the radio screen whenever the vehile is in reverse. It shouldn't matter what feed is coming in from what camera, as long as it's the analog, two-wire style. I would need someone to back me up on this, but that's how it seems to be working. I think technically one could plug in an analog video feed from a DVD player and it would display up on the radio. Would be interesting to know if the resolution of the incoming image makes a difference.

Hi, Fidel! I went to the Infotainment site and searched for a 2013. I'm not exactly sure the details of your rig, but a quick search is showing a possibility. So, yes, I do think the'll have something for you. Let me know what you find and how the install went if you decide to get'er done! 😎

My 2018 Ram Sport cig lighter is in the “cubby” area and my kit is the same as yours. Still no luck, spent 4 hours on this 😩 Any tips? Subbed to the channel tho great video!

Hi, pick.manuel. In this case I would recommend finding a different place to tie into a switched power source. I know that can be a pain, but perhaps there's a forum or wiring diagram out there that can help you find a place. For example, in our Tahoe I installed a dashcam and didn't have a good place to find power. I found a diagram on a forum that showed the source for heated seats, and since I didn't have heated seats, no factory harness was plugged in. The plug femail is extremely easy to access under the dash. I put a female blade connector on my wire and slid it right over the switched power source pin and voilà, it's worked perfectly for years! Hope this helps. Community, can anyone else help pick.manuel?

@@BigfootDadExploresMontana I was able to tap into my cig lighter. I think I found the issue! The kit on the website says “If purchasing this kit for 2018+ trucks and using the C-RVC programmer, you will also need our C-MODBYP module.” I will reply with an update and check more forums. Thanks

Interesting but compare to installing a mirror cam, which has a rear 1080p or better rear camera in the tailgate. You went to a lot of work but could have had a mirror cam which will do this and more. Having image appear on the radio is nice but overrated for quality.

Hi, Scott - this is a great idea. I saw that BTBRV was reviewing one of these on his channel. I'm awaiting his review follow-up to see the quailty and usablity.
