Hey Andrew! Very helpful stuff. I used to record in a bedroom full of stuff, and never noticed an echo. Since getting my own studio room, there has been a LOT of reverb... Since it essentially has nothing in it except a TV and a computer. I bought 48 pieces of acoustic foam in blue and black and managed to get them stuck with duct tape. They still fall down once in a while, so I might need to order some of those Command strips you mentioned and see how it goes! One wall seems sufficient, but I think I'll continue on and do the background wall just for a little more zip in future facecam videos. Thanks for the video. Your production value is awesome! Keep it up.
Thank you so much for the kind words! I recommend the strips or T-pins. Do keep in mind some have said their foam falls down in my comments while others say it's been up like mine for months/years. I hope you hear a difference, but most importantly keep creating 😄
I keep hearing "use how much you need." But how do I know how much I need?? I'm recording video in my office. Does it go behind the camera on that wall?
Great video, thanks Andrew. Which 3M Command strips did you use? I just used the poster hanging. I put the strips on each corner of the 2" acoustic foam (4 strips per foam) and they fell down. Wondering if I need a stronger command strip. Thanks for your help!!!
Hey @Lauren! For me the poster strips worked well and held strong, but it depends the weight of the foam. For the ones I used they were fine. Did you clean the surface? Maybe try the three pound strips! That SHOULD be able to do it :D
@@AndrewK Thanks Andrew. Yes I did clean the surface with alcohol, like you said to do. A few came down again, so I’m going to try the three pound strips as you suggested. Was your foam 2”? I’ll let you know how it goes. Thanks again!!!
Hi Andrew, command strips don't stick to the EQ Acoustics foam at all. I have used Command Strips all over the house to hang everything from pictures to toys but foam doesn't adhere to foam sold by EQ Acoustics foam.
Been trying to put together an audio studio piece by piece on a budget. Today I got lucky. I was at a thrift store for a clothing sale and found a huge pile of acoustic tiles, 12" x 12" x 2." They were priced at 25 for a dollar. Not joking. I bought 500 which is enough to cover all the bare walls and ceiling in my spare room. I even had enough to make a foam shade for the window so I don't get sound bouncing off the glass. I just needed to figure out how to mount them and this video just told me. Thanks for posting! Now all I need is 100 sq feet of carpet and I will have no hard surfaces in my office except the desk
How do you get the command strips to stick to the foam..? My panel just falls off of the wall because it doesn’t stick to the foam. I’m using the red side like shown in the video.
wait, dense question. did you apply rubbing alcohol on the foam as well? I assume yes and I doubt it does any harm even if not necessary but I want to confirm.
I've had mine for 2+ years no problem. Following the instructions has given me no problems. I can say that some have said they've had issues, and others have had none. They still work for me, but if you want another way there is a wall less way I made on the channel too!
Question. So I have a room right next to the bathroom and well as natural as it is, I do not want to hear people going to restroom. It's a rented property so I was looking into putting some of these acoustic panels. It's a small restroom but do I need to cover the whole wall between the room and the bathroom? Or a certain amount only. Your help will be greatly appreciated
So the panels sadly won’t stop all sound. You’re better off putting like a bookshelf with books and panels. Something to cause a barrier. Acoustic foam will help TREAT a room meaning less echo but not block sound!
hello AB 10 this won't sound proof a room, it just stops sound from reflecting around the room. I made this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lJuiRYfKQ5c.html on where to install acoustic foam for more help.
Should I use the poster like paper that I bought at Home Depot with acoustic foam, because wouldn’t it slip of with just the foam and command strips Or did I waste my money and should have just got the command strips alone
Hey man, thanks for the video. However, I was wondering, did you only treat the wall behind your computers? I've often had it in mind that I should have a setup all around me... What areas are most necessary?
For this video I only treated one wall for sake of time, but this video discusses WHERE you should install acoustic foam: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lJuiRYfKQ5c.html
Thanks for the video and the information about soundproofing. All the time we think about soundproofing walls. But can we use those panels in the ceiling? I have my studio in the basement and the noise from the upstairs is ridiculous. Thanks in advance for your comments
Hey Cinema Arts! It's not a dumb question at all! It is reusable, and I've used my acoustic foam in multipe different studios (Apartments) I've moved to!
The "after install" reading sounded quite a bit better than the "before." This was a great video for those wanting to improve recording quality in a room, but what if your end goal is blocking out the bass speakers and the loud trucks revving up for hours at a time outside? I live In a rental house, and I prefer to not commit any crimes to satisfy said goal lol. I'm just not sure what to buy and what would work best for this?
For that having curtains that specialize in dampening or getting moving/ sound blankets can help a bit, but may not look the best long term. I too rent, and most solutions are not as easy. If any comments have ideas please share!
We’re trying to keep our Son in the adjacent room from hearing our nighttime activities. What product do you recommend us use for that? His room is on the opposite side of a connecting wall. Thank you.
This is only going to help echo IN the room not with sound leakage. I'd recommend placing a heavy object like a bookshelf filled with books on that side. o.o
Great video I’m planing to buy the but my room has a window now there a house in construction in Baco of my home Another thing the wall of my closet is the wall to the living room and TV gets to loud so how can I add them, should I add them inside the closet or around the closet outside ?
Hello Untouchable! They won't sound proof the TV they will only treat the noise in the room. Just something to consider when it comes to acoustic foam.
Thank you for your information on installing acoustic foam with command strips. You addressed my concerns about harming my new paint joj on my walls. Thank you.
My upstairs neighbors in my apartment complex complain about the noise I make while I record audio, if i were to completely cover my cieling with acoustic panels would it help reduce the noise I cause at all?
Great video man, I am about to install mine and was looking for a guide. I noticed a lot of people install theirs, so the square is more of a diamond(I honestly dont know how to explain this better lol) does that make any difference, or is it just purely aesthetic?
I have a question about the placement of the panels, I am looking to buy these to help keep the noise from my room a bit lower from outside of my room, ive been told by family that they can hear me pretty loud even if I'm not being tbat loud, should I just place the foam sections along the wall where the door is and on the door(where the sound would be going through) , or should I put some all around the room? The wall alongside the door is connected to my sister's room, the door connects to a small hallway which leads to the entrance of the families rooms, thats why I think that whole wall may just be good enough, but if it would be better to place them around the other walls too then I will
hey there passive. As I mention in the video it's not the same thing as sound proofing. It will help a bit, but not enough to eliminate it. You might be better off with sound blankets, or moving bookshelves on the wall your family is. Really it's to help with echo, sound panels, or moving blankets/ sound blankets can help too. Sorry just want to make sure you know.
@@AndrewK I am thinking foam to make it possible, wood could be an overkill because of it’s weight :( Thanks for lightning fast answer! I appreciate your time and kindness!
i just got soundproofing for my room to record and i need the sound to be crisp, watching this video will help me learn to put it up thanks for providing a video Andrew Kan.
Where am I supposed to place the acoustic foam? Is there a specific place? Also after installing the acoustic foam should the rest of the walls in the room have soundproof foam on them? Please reply thanks.
You install them wherever you want to treat, I have them on one wall, and have corner pieces, but that is all up to you. Are you going to record Video?
Nice video, but in my experience command strips don't work, they just can't get a grip on the foam for more than a few days (and yes I've tried them both ways), it might be because where I live the weather is quite hot, and/or possibly the larger ones work better, but the size used in this video, even if you apply 9 of them doesn't work.
Hey! I followed your instructions regarding the command strips, but my acoustic panels have been falling off my walls time and time again, and I don't know why! I have tried putting them back up with new and stronger command strips, but they always fall off! Any idea of what might help or what the problem might be? Thanks
I haven't had this issue. I would reach out to command themselves. There are also tpins that are like 2 inches can get 100 for 7 bucks. Sorry it's not working well. Command has been pretty good with refunds from what I've been told.
Hey dude man! I actually just made a video on where to Install Acoustic Foam. However that's a good place to start and also anywhere else the sound reflects when you speak!
Hey Joseph Quam Thank you! I hope this works well for you, and you're happy with the quality you get! This can help A TON :D What is your favorite genre to VO act for? :D
the command strips don't seem to hold onto the foam, despite pressing firmly for 30+ seconds. is my foam to "heavy" for these mini strips you recommended? any tips?
I haven't had this experience, however I am sorry that happened. I've seen some people add painters tape first and then the strips. I also know t-pins work well too.
I don’t know why but the command strips will not stick to my foam. I’ve tried holding them forever and the strips stick to the wall fine, but the foam separates from the strips after a few seconds
just bought my electric drumkit and still got complained by a neighbor ugh! probably the tapping sounds. is this gonna work soundproofing my living room? its not big anyway i live in a flat on the 12th.
Do you have any plans to treat your ceiling at all? I have found a lot of people tend to forget the ceiling, and that can reflect sound in low-ceilinged spaces. We don't soundproof because we record in a basement space that's so low that it's almost impossible to fix and keep our green screen wall intact. I need to upgrade our recording equipment, but our furnace is literally feet away from where we film, so that hum will be there anyway, LOL.
I do want to treat my ceiling, just don't have a way to currently get up there XD I did not know you filmed in your basement, but if it's on a lower level I get that. Corner pieces might help with the sound bouncing off though, also a green screen carpet can absorb sound and give more opportunities :-)
You just hold the strip, slowly pull the tab down, and should come off clean! Worked well for me in the last few moves, but keep in mind the wall type! This article breaks it down: www.command.com/3M/en_US/command/how-to-use/picture-hanging-strips/
The command strips I applied the pressure the packaging asked for, and it's never let me down! It's pretty much double sided tape, but one side is covered and allows you to add pressure to the foam, to get it to stick! It has a convenient pull tab to make it easy to remove!
Yo so I’m going to be recording myself rapping on a corner desk so I’m putting the sound tiles in the corner of my room on each sides of the corner to catch my voice will that work to prevent echo btw I bought 12 so I’m going to have them cover as much of the sides as possible
Hello Dylan Romaniak I didn't do anything other than hold them as tight as I can. If they're not working there are T-pins you can get they cost like 5 - 10 dollars and leave very small holes. These still work for me, but sorry to hear they aren't working as expected for you :/
Do you know if it would be ok to leave studio foam in it's compressed (shipped) state for a couple weeks? Or should i take it out and start the shape recovery process right away?
I needed this so I could have a way to put the panels up, but my problem is that I'm doing this kinda thing for a room in my basement so would the same tactic work? One side of the room has concrete and the rest is wood (which was added when I moved in)
I'm unsure because I've never used it on concrete myself. I 've used them on wood with no issue! There is also a way to do this without a wall. Check out this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-V1_hYrS7CJM.html
I use RockWool covered in second-hand bed sheets. Makes my recording space nice and "dead." My voice is very deep and I find RockWool to be more effective in attenuating reverb in my booth. I also use high-pile shag carpet on the floor of my booth.
I work from home, and unfortunately we have a zero tolerance policy for background noise. I have a very anxious dog that I'm worried about. Car doors being shut and people coming to the door will definitely set her off. My question is: would it be a good idea to put these tiles somewhere in my office to prevent any noise coming in while I'm working on the phone? Thanks for any advice
So as I stated in the video they don't sound proof, they mostly just help a room sound better for recording. For what you are looking for, I can't say it will work too well. Sorry about that :/
Sweet, thank you. I just moved into a Duplex apartment and I wanted to sound proof a couple rooms. I play guitar and I wanted to make sure that the family in the other Duplex didn't hear me. The Duplex is a rental and I feared about damaging the walls. Again, thank you.
So my only caution is this will not soundproof only muffle a bit and help with reflections. It will sound better in room but won’t stop the noise. Other than that glad this helped! Happy New Year!
My nephew likes to record his livestreams while playing and at the same time, he's so loud when playing that the neighbor is complaining (they share a wall). Should we do soundproofing?
As I explain in this video, they don't sound proof only acoustically treat a room and reduce echo :x sorry ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-V1_hYrS7CJM.html
@@AndrewK What would you recommend for something like this, i'm also in the same situation, not wanting others to be able to hear me being loud in my room.
The first time i put them up, i didn’t clean the walls and used double sided tape. they all fell in 2 hours. i took your advice, cleaned, used command strips and pressed firmly for 30 seconds on each strip, but 5 of them have fallen off the command strips in 12 hours. is there any real way to ensure they stick
I’m confused on what I need because I don’t think my room echos it just picks up a lot of noise bc I have a condenser mic. Will this reduce some of that or stop it
Well it will absorb sounds in the room, but it won't keep sounds from the outside out, and it won't eliminate all sounds. However, it could reduce some of the noise, depending what it is :)
Hi there thankyou for the video. In thinking of just getting a mattress and putting it in front of my door to block out sound. Got some noisy as housemates
Hi. I have noisy neighbors and I am thinking of installing one. I want to ask if t would be sufficient to just cover the wall area of my bed or should I cover the entire wall?
It depends on what you’re trying to do :-) this isn’t the best solution for noise cancellation. It effects the sound in a room. This article goes more in depth: acousticalsolutions.com/soundproofing-an-apartment-non-invasive-fixes-for-quieter-renting/
Hey, can anyone please help me! I live in a small studio and my neighbour is constantly complaining that i make to much noise when i play darts.. if i add accoustic foams around the board, do you think this would make a difference? Also i might add a carpet in front of the board, maybe this can absord the sound too?
A little long ide say for a simple set up. But be it so. The simplistic nature of how you taught it allows a 5 year old to be able to learn how to do this. A+ performance 👏 thank you 🔥
Hey there Mi Ka, not really it's to help treat echo. To stop noise from outside you can have heavy bookshelves, some curtains, and other things, but these will help treat sound.
gnogas I’ve never experienced that. If you pull them slowly, you should be fine :-) another option is getting a piece of poster board getting adhesive spray and placing them on there. Then place on the wall with a method you trust. For me and others I have worked with command strips work fine :-) Get what you feel comfortable with!
