I used to use a circular saw with a guide set to about 3/16" and trim the lock side of the door the entire length, only takes a minute, no plane, sanding etc. Gives a nice gap all around. Router the hinges too.

Hi and thank you for the great videos about drywall and all the tips and tricks. This video is full of information also, but it would be great to show all the steps needed for replacing a door in a brick wall. Telling a brick wall I mean a good old fashion internal thick plaster which makes a 25sm brick wall extend to 31-33sm at total. How to remove the old frame to minimize the damage on the plaster. How to shim and fix the new door frame and how to restore the damaged parts of the wall plaster. Once again - thank you for the all effort you give in making theese videos.

Hi. Thank you for all the wonderful and informative videos. I do wish that i cal could be so handy like you as a female 😊. Watching your video, I do have questions but I’m going to try to follow exactly what you do ☺️. I did purchase 2 new slab doors to update our current old looking doors. I purchased the standard size and sure needed to trim it down to fit the right size. To purchase a custom door cost more so I’m trying to just trim it myself. The saw that you use, can you share the info so that I can purchase one for the future door change too. I still got about 10 more doors to update. Thank you and more helpful videos to come please. Ryobi makes a kit to cut the hinge mortises and hole for the knob. I believe it’s designed to reference off the original door (if you have it). Would be a time saver if you’re doing a lot of doors but if it’s just one, maybe not worth the money. Requires a router.

Do yourself a favor and get two 1-1/2 chisels. That way you have a spare sharp one when one gets dull. I use a variety of chisels in my carpentry business including a 2-1/2 x 8" slick for cleaning up notches in 6x6 posts. All sharp enough to shave with.

DISCLAIMER: DON’T EVER RUN POWER TOOLS (ESPECIALLY TOOLS WITH MOVING BLADES) WITH YOUR EYES CLOSED! ...That said, I loved the video! Awesome quality, simple and clear instructions, & the end result looks great! I cringed a little bit when you ran the planer across the top of the door with your eyes closed though... Like I’m all for working faster to get it done... As long as faster doesn’t mean getting wood shavings in the eye at that 10,000 rpm speed your electric planer operates at...

This is why you never chisel lengthwise at the hinge and the surface veneer. 13:43 I've cut a few doors like you have here. I don't feel so bad about my results. I found them to look substantially better by using a router and template to cut those hinges in. It may not have worked as well here because your door jambs were square, but by using the router, all you'd need to do is cut the rounded corners with the chisel square again. As far as the door goes, your planing of the door goes pretty fast, given your experience you have no problems I'm sure. I use a circ saw guide and just set it to the depth I need and get exactly what I want cut off. Perfect to my line every time.

I strongly believe one should attack the frame before the door (assuming you're okay with repainting it) in order to get a good fit. Otherwise, the next door replacement will require door trimming again. Get the frame cleaned up, and any standard door will fit.
@phillyhotboy02
@phillyhotboy02 5 лет назад
Planning the door is far easier than planning the jam otherwise you'd have to remove the door stop or use a manual planer.
@phillyhotboy02
@phillyhotboy02 5 лет назад
Also there might be nails or screws in the jamb that secure the jamb to the rough frame. Also if it's an exterior door, attacking the frame weakens the structure and the latching integrity.

Just wondering why you don’t use a router for the hinge mortises.

And how to fix doors that slightly open by themselves, or slightly close by themselves?

A bit late to the party but was just trying to fix my warped interior hollow door. It won't close because the bottom of the door is hitting the outside door jamb. I did the warp door test and it is the mid to top part of the door that is warped inwards (towards the inside of the room). Should I change the whole door or try to straighten the door to save hassle? Not sure how to straighten it out other than putting weight on the warped end? Please help thanks.

Any chance you could show me how to convert a bifold closet door into a pair of 15" french doors for a closet? I guess I would use a magnet catch?

Just did an install like you're doing here and left a 1/8th in gap at the top as you did. Unfortunately, the customer could see a crack at the top of the door because the old doorstop was too thin. Try as I could, They saw it as my cutting the door short. There's no pleasing some people

Does anyone know the name of the kit to install that helps you cut the doorknob hole to match existing switchplate?

Seriously Jeff you owe it to yourself to buy a hinge jig kit, to be used with a router. So much easier and better results. Check out the milescraft hingemate set.

I recently discovered interesting surface-mount hinges that don't require any chiselling. Could be useful in some situations.

I paid a schmuck money to install 8 doors worth $450 a piece he didn’t frame or caulk them. I hate horrible contractors and he had the nerve to come recommended. Now let me take note 📝 ✌🏽

So Sorry to hear that. Hopefully one day we can help create a better handyman environment where clients are more informed to know how to ask the important questions and these sharks smarten up. Cheers Cyrious!
