Install Harley Wireless Headset Interface Module-WHIM-Flash-Update Software-DIY

We show you exactly how to install the Harley Wireless Headset Interface Module (WHIM), and explain the exact parts you'll need. There are specific ways things need to be installed for proper operation. Don't waste your money by having a dealership do this install. You can do it yourself right in your very own shop or garage with this step-by-step tutorial video.
After you complete the WHIM install you will have to take your motorcycle to a Harley dealership and have your Boom Box Infotainment system flashed (re-configured), so it will recognize the new WHIM and operate properly. Harley dealerships are the only persons allowed to have the proprietary software necessary to do this Boom Box system flash and it is called "Digital Technician". Some dealerships charge for this simple system flash (5 minutes at the most) and others don't.

Appreciate the video on the WHIM. Just bought my first HD. 2020 SG. My wife and I both have new Sena 20S headsets and continually have issues. After watching this video I took a chance at my dealer to see if they would flash my software to activate Apple CarPlay. My salesman told me the bike had it when I bought it but couldn’t get it to work. They offered to flash it for free. After an hour and a half of waiting they told me Harley won’t let them do it anymore as of 1Q20. They came out with an Android update and removed the Apple CarPlay flash. Said the WHIM would have to be installed for it to work. Just thought I would pass that along to your viewers. Keep the videos coming. Much appreciated. -Steve (Houston, Tx)

Thanks for this video. It allowed me to install my own WHIM and more importantly it allowed me to show the HD technician how to properly perform the flash upgrade which made it all work. After showing your video to the HD dealer I wasn’t even charged for the upgrade. Thanks again

Ryan, Awesome video, There is one thing you might want to add (and I forgot to do this also) is to use the rubber cap you pulled off the black CB connector and plug the dead headed cb connector on the harness. You don’t want water and dirt to get into that harness.

Great, detailed video on this process. Holy crap though...what a lot of BS to have to go through to fix the boombox shortcomings. I've got a '13, so I won't have to deal with this for awhile.

I know this is very late to a 4 yr old video. I just watched a video that stated that the data cable is placed under the fuel tank so it can also function as an antenna.

Ryan, this video along with all of your other videos, was very informative. I still use the wire for communication, but with this information I may now change to wireless. Also, glad you addressed the CB and XM since I have both and I was wondering how that would work with wireless. At Biketoberfest yesterday I tried a helmet with the Harley wireless at the H-D display area and was impressed. We'll see, thanks.

Just remember, unless you buy a CVO you have to have a WHIM installed to be able to use the wireless functionality of the Boom System. But if you install or have a WHIM installed and the system flashed by the dealer.................your wired headsets will no longer be fully functional. By that I mean that you can still hear the audio, but the microphone will be disabled! Don't think so? Read the fine print on the Harley Website for the WHIM under guides. Here is what it says: Note: Impact of Retrofit on Wired Microphone Functionality: Upon installation of the WHIM, your motorcycle’s wired microphone functionality will no longer be available. However, wired audio will continue to function as before. So seriously think about going wireless..............I had to go back to wired because the wireless system worked so poorly that I would rather have the wired headsets.

Ryan - great video. Do you know if there is a Y-connector for the accessory connector? We ran a 7-pin DIN for the wife to use wired headset like you did. Now we are adding WHIM. We'd like the option to use wired headsets for longer rides/touring so we don't lose comms when Sena battery dies. As an FYI for the collective audience, WHIM install instructions (version 2017-06-20) have inverted the pictures that indicate what brackets to use. As you show, the "Z" type bracket is for fork mounted fairings. On page 2, figures 1 and 2 captions in the HD directions are inverted making it look like you need the small flat RoadGlide bracket for the fork mounted fairings.

When researching about whether I was going to purchase this product on the hd website, I saw in the comments section of the product description that a guy was claiming that he was using a non-hd sena 20s,BUT he claims to have purchased an hd bottom piece(where the headset docks on the helmet) and that made him get stereo sound). if u could examine this and perhaps post a report of this I would be greatly appreciative

hy ryan, i have the whim installed and enabled etc but the "wireless headset setup" line does not show on the setup menu...so I can not setup the wireless headset with the bike...what can I do....CarPlay is working fine

I have a 19 street glide Special with whim installed. However I rarely use my full face helmet with my Harley. And I want CarPlay to work without a headset as is apparently required. Short of removing the whim, reflashing and using the CarPlay bypass plug, is their no way to make CarPlay work without a headset turned on if whim is installed?

I'm trying to decide if I should add the WHIM to my 2019 FLHXS - and if it will give me more options than I currently have? I bought a Sena 20s (NON HD) off Ebay - it's on my helmet and I get STEREO sound. I am Bluetoothed to my phone (iPhone X) as well as the Boom Audio GTS on my bike. I use the HD Route Planner and it is displayed on my bike when I tap on my options. It asks me if I want to upload my rides. It will also give me turn by turn (in stereo) through my headphones. So what am I missing... I'm not really sure I need to spend the $$ on a WHIM. Maybe I have a freak set of Sena 20s that seem to work just like the HD branded ones would??

Thanks for the videos Ryan. I'm having a problem with setting up my Whim that I'm hoping you might be able help me with? After installing, updating the software and having the boombox flashed I have no audio in the sena 10s. The headset pairs and is recognized by the boombox but no matter what settings I try I do not get audio to the sena. I have chosen the headset speakers in the settings but I get nothing. The sena does work because I tested it independently from the bike with a phone call and music thru my galaxy phone. Maybe you have an idea of what I can try before I think the Whim is defective. Thanks

Providing the whim is installed, will a 30k sena head set with out the harley stamp play music in sterio sound. Or will you still the the sena with the harley stamp.?

You'll only get stereo sound if you use the Harley stamped units. Otherwise, mono sound.

Ryan Urlacher Thank you man, I've tried many times, even renaming the file but nothing, the same message appear every time. The software version in the WHIM is the same of upload file (1.0.2). Can that be the reason?

Darn. I'd definitely be in contact with Sena support via Harley then. Sena makes it for Harley. Maybe a lemon unit? or some other bug? I'd get it exchanged from where ever you bought it. Wish I had a simple ansnwer.

Hi Ryan, I'm somewhat confused by this. I have a 17 SG standard that has a bluetooth option allowing me to pair the 20S to the bike's Boom, however, it does not allow me to use the 20S mic. Is the point of the WHIM to allow you to do that?

Thanks for the easy-to-follow instructions. Job well done. Two quick question--If I install BOTH the CB and the WHIM, do I still need to buy the WHIM Cable (PN 69201726)? Also, I noticed in the last BOOM software update that it included some WHIM stuff. I have heard conflicting info in the forums and was wondering if the BOOM still requires a flash by a dealer as you indicated when you originally posted this? The closest dealer is 700 miles away and I will be 2 days into my next trip before I could get it flashed. Thanks, Jim

once you do this, you loose the 7 pin din plug , incase you wanted to use wired headset?

Correct, you'd have to go back up in the fairing and unplug the WHIM and plug your 7 PIN back in. Not sure of a case that would be necessary though.

When I go to the setup menu, and then to the wireless headset section, it says it is disabled and will not allow me to enable. Has anyone ran into this, or know how to enable pairing mode.
