This is guide for kernel 6.8+ users, howto install NVIDIA proprietary Linux drivers (manually using .run files) and disable Nouveau driver on Fedora Linux 40 and same method works with Fedora 39 too. Linux Kernels 6.8+ are tested.
Currently working NVIDIA drivers are:
- 555.xx (555.58 NFB)
- 550.xx (550.90.07)
- 535.xx (535.183.01)
- 470.xx (470.256.02)
- 390.xx (390.157)
- 340.xx (340.108)
This guide works with NVIDIA GeForce 6/7/8/9/200/300/400/500/600/700/800/900/10/20/30/40 series cards.
This method allow you easily install / test / use different versions of NVIDIA drivers, you can test BETA drivers and switch back to stable.

You have to override GDM's udev rules that prevent the Wayland session from appearing in the cog wheel for Nvidia users (stupid, I know). In order to fix that, open up a terminal and type: sudo ln -s /dev/null /etc/udev/rules.d/61-gdm.rules Reboot your system and that's it!

This was very detailed but to be expected given the long standing issues with NVIDIA/Linux. Unfortunately this didn't work for my somewhat minimal RTX 3070 + Fedora 40 + KDE 6.0 (sddm) + Wayland build (from a minimal/everwhere install + KDE Applications) Basically went through the whole process and when I rebooted, encountered a black screen where you'd expect the login screen. When I ran the NVIDIA installer, there was one key difference where the installer complained that it couldn't find my X server installation (something along those lines) which I ignored. Ended up reverting back to nouveau the old grub config + backed up kernel. Might try RPM fusion after I research that option more.

I followed another guide doing the same thing or similar and ended up frying my system. Had to re install fedora. I got to the point where you reboot to the cli but nothing came up, just black. Rebooted and used the rescue option 3 rows down. Went to install the driver and it had me remove some xorg-x11-nvidia drivers. I then reran the command to install the new nvidia driver and gave me an error of missing the kernel source. No idea what to do from there so just formatted and started over. I dont get why i need to hack the system to install the drivers, shouldnt the os supply these? Looks you did more then just install drivers since you have multiple environments. I dont have those options on my log in screen.
@inttf
@inttf Месяц назад
This is of course problematic to know real problem if you run commands just partially. I mean that you should have everything needed installed (and done) when you boot runlevel 3. Then just install drivers and boot back to runlevel 5. You should have not missing kernel sources if you follow guide exactly. Btw. I don't know anything about your system? What hardware you have? I assume at this point, that you have desktop PC with NVIDIA card?

What desktop you are running? I earlier tested this with Fedora 40 and looks like only XFCE, LXDE, LXQt, etc. style desktops are working. So if you want to run latest Fedora, then I recommend some pure X11 desktop. If you want run GNOME or KDE, then I recommend CentOS or Rocky Linux, distro is fully supported, similar to use than Fedora, also older NVIDIA drivers should work without problems.

next to rd.driver.blacklist=nouveau and nvidia-drm.modeset=1, nvidia-drm.fbdev=1 may also be necessary, otherwise you could end up in a blank screen after installing the drivers. Possibly since 555 onwards this flag may also be required.

try also adding nvidia-drm.fbdev=1 next to nvidia-drm.modeset=1
@inttf
@inttf 5 дней назад
Looks like latest kernel versions like 6.9.6 disable fbdev. I add this to my guide. This is actually bit strange, but SDDM shows blank screen when booted and GDM works normally, no matter is X11 or Wayland enabled. I do some additional video to show this. This is not actually NVIDIA drivers version related. This is Fedora kernel "problem" and might be fixed later. Personally I couldn't verify this with NVIDIA .run installer, but after boot with NVIDIA drivers installed. But you are totally right, adding nvidia-drm.fbdev=1 will fix this now.

@@inttf It worked, thx! 👍 And i appreciate the advantages of your solution. Fedora is awesome, as your channel is👏, but nvidia is a weakpoint imho. Newcomers with nvidia maybe overwhelmed. It took me 2 days to find the right way to install nvidia when trying Fedora 39 (i live in the debian/ubuntu universe). I use linux since 1992... I am a long term Pop OS user, but this is still 22.04. So i wanted an alternative. I noticed that during the beta there was a lot of discussion about nvidia gpu problems. Thorvalds was right😉

@@sheldonkupa9120 Excellent, you're welcome! Yes, I have used Fedora since Fedora Core 1 (Linux since 1996). So I really know what you mean. NVIDIA is always problem (closed source drivers is the real problem), but have to say that their current release process is also much better for Linux users. The newest kernels are well supported and the development has been much better in recent years. I'm not holding my breath that we'll see any open source in the future, and that's NVIDIA's right, of course. This method is more like alternative method to everything else. This is just my "statement" to this NVIDIA problem. I try to keep this up-to-date until it works. 😉 It has now been online since 2015, so let's see how long it will last.

This is terrible, I see a lot of people enjoying Fedora. Why in the world is it so weird to install a driver? OpenSUSE, Debian and even better Ubuntu have a simple command to install the correct driver. Why should I do all these things? Disable this and that, download that other thing, make it executable etc etc. Oof.
@inttf

You might not understand the idea behind this instruction, so this discussion might even be pointless. Fedora is a completely free and open source distro and this guide is the way to install NVIDIA drivers, as NVIDIA itself intended! I really understand that we live in a world where people have trouble concentrating for a few minutes watching a video and then do something what they see. So unfortunately this guide is not suitable for such people. This guide is Linux users who can and who understand!

I originally published this guide 2015. RPMFusion was totally broken almost one year.
