One of the most important and perhaps overlooked factors of any remodel project is dust containment. Dust containment is important because it provides a level of project protection not only for the occupants of the home, but also for workers. Dust containment also conforms to the new EPA standards relating to lead.

Did you ever notice that micro dust at the end of a job? Just seem to find it, as a fine finisher in painting, I find two layers with my vapor barrier is best...

Sheet 6mil plastic or if the ceilings are super tall, make a frame out of 2x4's and put the plastic around it.

What is the Brand name for your blower?
@westbrookrestorationsllcca6527
Hi Tim. It's an OMNIAIRE nitro 600. these are put together by a company in Mukiteo WA named Omnitec Design Inc.
@DiffEQ
@DiffEQ 6 лет назад
OMNIAIRE OA600N NITRO Negative Air Machine (Airflow - 200-600 cfm) But you really have to consider how small that is when you realize it's a HEPA filter and will de-rate very quickly. A 400 sq. ft. room will be 4,000 cu. ft. with 10 ft. ceilings. That gives you nine air exchanges in an hour and assumes that all the dust is airborne and vacated. It's not. Not even close. On a 600CFM blower with new filter you can drop dust (drywall, sawdust, masonry dust, etc.) and it will fall to the floor with very little caught in the air stream. And that's 18" from the blower! Consider that a typical 20" high velocity fan moves more than 3,000 CFM and you see just how expensive (HEPA filter are not cheap) this system is with very little effect except for light, airborne dust. Yes, you can sweep the floors later and blow the room out, but you'll clog that filter so quickly it will make you angry. FYI... from experience. BTW, I live very close to the manufacturer in Mukilteo and no one I know is using this system. Been here for over 30 years. Want a system that works? Just vent to the outside using lay-flay duct and restrict the ingress of air and you're in a wind tunnel for under $80 with no consumables except the lay-flat ducting, which you would re-use if you wanted to save some money.
@andrewtimothy8571
@andrewtimothy8571 5 лет назад
@@DiffEQ you're very correct in your calculations. It is much easier (and cheaper to vent to the outside with standard filtration then it is to pay for expensive "HEPPA" filters. I worked doing mold remediation for quite some time. A negative atmospheric chamber can be created simply with a box fan, some 6 inch ducting, and a cardboard box. Also I find that building a "Sally Port" which is two doors (or zippers) one to seal off the contaminated area, the middle room for decontamination, and then out that door into the uncontaminated area. The middle room is where you take off your protective outerwear decontaminate yourself and anything your carrying before exiting out of the contaminated area. This may seem a little bit "overkill" however when working with insurance companies you want to be very through.
@Lolatyou332
@Lolatyou332 3 года назад
@@DiffEQ Problem with that is that you can't legally just shoot lead or asbestos-based dust outside as a business. The negative air scrubbers / fans would have HEPA filters that would catch most asbestos and lead-based particles.

Why can't you just cleanup after remodeling? why do the dust protection which is futile effort?
@westbrookrestorationsllcca6527
Hi John. Actually dust control is one of the most important parts of any remodel project especially interior work. A lot of tool manufacturers now have integrated components for vacuum systems because its so important. Festool is the leader in this area. Indoor air quality, is critical in maintaining a healthy, working and living environment while we are performing a remodel. All it takes is for a cold air return to suck dust into the furnace system and deliver it around the home, to become responsible for cleaning the clients entire house, costing many of thousands of dollars.
@arrowstheorem1881
@arrowstheorem1881 7 лет назад
Westbrook Restorations LLC Do you have any video on your solution using furnace for cold air return? if the air pressure or wind is strong, will the blue tape hold up and would not it cause paint to peel off in some cases since some wall paints are easy to peel off due to whatever reasons? Using duct tape on the floor? would that not cause residue issues?
@westbrookrestorationsllcca6527
There are many different tricks and techniques that can be used, depending on the type of project. sometimes repainting is just part of the project to fix any peel damage. I don't recommend using duct tape directly on floors or walls, though. We use a technique where we apply blue tape to the wall first and then use a gorilla tape onto that which holds the plastic. Because the blue tape is using its full adhesion it makes it a little more difficult to come off, plus we use our third hand poles against walls, to help. You are heading in the right direction with your questions, its just a matter of experimenting with finding techniques that mitigate or eliminate the potential problems your bringing up. All good questions.
