Installing a DITRA-HEAT Power Module --- Bedroom, Bathroom, and Shower HEATED TILE FLOOR

Schluter Ditra-Heat is a popular choice for heating porcelain, stone, and ceramic floors. While many different heat sources can be used in a home, electric radiant flooring is especially nice if you are installing porcelain tile floors. Sometimes, large areas of flooring such as bedrooms require more than one thermostat because they typically only can power only up to 225 square feet as long as a 240 volt circuit is powering it. For 120 volt circuits, the maximum square footage per thermostat is 135 square feet.
In order to supply additional power to the large heated floor cables, a power module is necessary if you want to control the entire floor area with one thermostat. Several power modules can be combined to heat as large of an area as needed.

I have to hand it to anyone who does tile work for a living. I recently tiled my kitchen floor (about 10x12) and by time I was done, my back and knees were killing me. I was going to tile the dining area too, but that is put on hold for a while because I decided that I hate tiling. One big mistake I made was buying the home depot tile levelers that use that little tool that looks like pliers. Every single time I used it, it pushed the tiles apart a little bit, which meant I had to adjust them again, almost every single time. To make matters worse, my thumb was in near agonizing pain at the joint for the next couple days because there was no way to comfortably grip the pliers because they had to be so wide. Next time I am definitely using the Marshalltown levelers because they are twist on and don't require any special tools.

I’ve tried those HD too (the curved clips) and they sucked. However, I’ve noticed the pros use their pliers to pull the wedge toward already-set tiles to minimize the pulling apart problem. I just free hand mine, but it’s extremely slow. If I was a pro, I would probably use the big ones that Tile Pro GA used to use. Man, I miss that guy’s uploads. I guess he got sick of all the editing or something.

You always do a great job. Tile is laborious. I wanted to use schluter and install heat in my large master bath floors. Fiancée said “no” and my tile guy wasn’t familiar with schluter. So I passed. Well it got cold that winter in GA and she regretted her decision and froze her butt off in the mornings. Bath is above the garage so it’s nippy. Next time I’m gonna go with my gut like I did throughout most of my reno.

My electrician placed a gfci 20 AMP breaker for my bathroom heated floor . The floor will not warm now but worked fine when I initially installed it without help. I would like to replace it with a dd 20 amp breaker without the GFCI. and see if it heats. The thermostat is GFCI the elctrician was being cautious.

Any electrician here please advise; I wired a radiant floor thermostat with only a 30A 240V (2c#10) because I didn't know we'd need a power module. I guess we can just make a joint and bring the power to the power module?

Love the work as usual. I am planning on doing heated floor in my bathroom in the future. I do have a question for you (and maybe a future test video?). How strong are foam pre slopes and ramps? Do you think they will handle someone in a wheel chair with no issues? I have an elderly family member I take care of and is wheelchair bound. I considered adding a ramp to give access but have also considered removing the current curb and cutting the shower down to a curb less to allow a wheelchair access. Any info from your experience and advice is appreciated. Forgot to add, this is on concrete slab

It was several years ago when I went. I believe they were concerned with the wire overheating due to all the heat radiating up the wire,. Maybe it’s okay for short runs like curbs and going up and down bench face.

I got a call today from a guy wanting me to repair tile on a system just like this...tile keeps breaking, this will be the 3rd time it's been done ( I havn't worked on it). My instinct says tear it all out and start over, is this necessary ?...Is this a common problem with this style floor, possibly wrong type of tile ? ...Mid Missouri, building code in Mo is gravy, we don't have contractors like most states, you summit plans/blueprints they are either approved are not, point is I'm free to do what i want or necessary .

What nobody tells you about ditra heat is . No area rugs . They say not recommend for ditra heat . If you do decide your going to add area rug it has to be no more then R1 value . Searched and searched can’t find a rug with a r value rating . I haven’t seen one with a listed r value . Check the tag on your area rugs . I’m certain you won’t find one

Very good video. I have a questing? How deep do I need to clean the grout joints? I am trying to clean it the full thickness of the tile. Is this necessary? Some times the clips do not break the full thickness of the tile and I am cleaning it out the best I can. Please help. Thanks
@travisk5589
@travisk5589 2 года назад
Clean joints as you go along. Use a sponge. Also, use a margin trowel to knock down the thinset at the perimeter of the tile as you are setting the tile. Then come back the next day and clean out the remaining with a razor blade/ box cutter. Do not wait more than 2 days to do this. It becomes too hard and near impossible to remove once the thinset has dried for a a few days. Some say that 100 5 of the thinset must be removed from the joint to the depth of the tile. You will be good if you remove it to 50% the depth of the tile. Just make sure to remove the thinset on the edges of the tiles and do not remove too much grout during the washing phase.

Thought the US only ran on 110v? I wonder what Artisan Electrics would think of these electrics?
@MulloyDIY
@MulloyDIY 2 года назад
We use 120 or 240 volt circuits in the US. 240 volts are used for higher draw appliances such as ovens, electric dryers, vehicle chargers, etc. A 240 volt circuit uses two 120 volt conductors (commonly called L1 and L2) and a ground. It may or may not have a neutral depending on the appliance requirements. Also, 110/120 and 220/240 technically don’t mean the same thing but are used interchangeably in most cases. It’s just an evolution of our grid system over the decades.
@travisk5589
@travisk5589 2 года назад
SIngle phase 110ish volts, use 2 phases and it will bring you up to 220ish volts. And then there is commercial.
@Johnnyreengo
@Johnnyreengo 2 года назад
Do you verify that it’s all working before you put the mortar down?
@MulloyDIY
@MulloyDIY 2 года назад
The cable is tested three times according to the instructions: prior to being unspooled, after being laid, and after tiling. The tests ensure there’s no fault in the ground, conductors, or insulation but it’s still a nerve racking moment when you finally turn the system on.

Given the square footage, was hydronic considered as a (potentially cheaper to run long-term) alternative?
@naps3386
@naps3386 2 года назад
Hydronic is much more expensive to install, and it raises the floor quite a bit more than the electric, but I agree...hydronic is going to be much less to run.

@nikkikiska

0 seconds ago Wow bro, I hope you had an electrician check this or better yet, do the install, b/c you clearly don't understand electricity. Also, if you are going to install stuff incorrectly so that it voids the warranty, best not to videotape it. You've got cable running less than 2" from walls in spots, cable on the sides of closet floor which is a no-no, and approval from an inspector is needed for the shower bench. And that's just from a quick glance of half the video. Hopefully you didn't burn the customer's house down...
