Thank you! This is a great video. When you search "Install Wixey Digital Planer Gauge" you wind up with videos that are 25 minutes long with tons of commentary. Some of us just want a good example of how to install, and this one gets right to the point! Well done, Sir. Thanks again.
Just got my Wixey and after having read numerous reviews regarding the vague instructions that came with the Wixey and how various people described their work-arounds (the written descriptions being confusing as well), this video clarified everything. As the saying goes, one picture is worth.... Thanks for posting this!
I recently bought a DeWalt DW735X Planer and a Wixey WR510 digital readout for it. I found the instructions that came with the Wixey too confusing and pretty much useless. I found your video here on RU-vid and your install instructions are very easy to follow. The Wixey on my DeWalt planer works great and is spot on accurate. Thank you so much for posting this video. It was a big help!
I installed mine a couple of days ago. I watched this video before the instrument came in the mail and when I did the install, I was able to interpret the instructions because I had watched. Thanks.
Travis, I just did mine. I agree the Wixey instructions were pretty vague. You simplified with your video. A great service for all of us woodworkers, thanks much.
incredibly helpful. Was pulling my hair out trying to understand the instructions provided by the manufacturer. They should include a link to your video in their material
Great tutorial! I switched this over from a DW734 to a DW735 and couldn't find the instructions. I was back up and running in time with this vid. Thanks!
This tutorial was fantastic. The instructions on the Wixey were vague and mostly useless. I was messing with it for a couple hours and may have installed it incorrectly. I watched your video and did it in about 30 min. Thanks.
Great supplement for the instruction, it really helped loads. My only suggestion is for folks that have already bolted their planers down to NOT use the leveling screw. By the time it’s suggested to remove it, you’ll have to unbolt the planer to get it out. :) thanks for a great install video.
Thanks so much for the video, without it I don't know what I would have done. But, with it I've installed my wixey and it's working just fine. Thanks again.
GREAT!! Exactly what I needed...you totally de-mystified installing this contraption. I just got the 510. The instructions are a total P.O.S and the print job is horrible. Chinglish De-Luxe. Thank the good lord for RU-vid. Dunno if you're still making vids but I subscribed, liked, and rang the bell.
I come from a "metric" world so while this was very informative, I am not sure why when you set it to 3/4" you get 0.71"? 3/4" is 0.75", no? Thank you for taking the time to do this video.
Sorry for the delayed response. I set it to 3/4" when I set up the ruler part. At some point (off camera) i switched to a smaller dimension (probably 1/2") to do my final calibration since it requires a few passes through the planer. That would be the reason why it's less than 3/4" I did find it accurate, though.
This is a good video... The only problem is speed of speech. I keep having to go back to parse the words. A lot of times, it all runs together. Not attempting to be judgemental, it is just an objective note for the continued evolution of your videos, as we are all evolving. :-)
So two questions #1: should the measuring bar just drop down on it's on with the spring tension? No matter how much I adjust the screws as soon as I start to tighten them it no longer freely moves, it is kind of bound and I have to push it down. The manual says it should come down on on with spring tension. #2: Once I have everything calibrated I do not want to raise or lower the height unless the digital readout is on correct? I assumed that if I moved the height when the digital readout was off it wouldn't be correct when I turned it on right.
Don't know. I'm only drilling into the ruler and not into the machine itself. But it might void the warranty. I wasn't too concerned about it, but that would be a decision you'd have to make yourself.
It doesn't matter what you set it to when you are calibrating...what matters is that the cutterhead height doesn't change...hence using a stop...any stop..
Thanks for the video- it was helpful. A question, though... if you measure the newly planed test board to calibrate the Wixey ON THE END of the board, aren't you likely measuring some snipe (and thus getting a slightly lower measurement)?. Do you think it would be good to cut the test board back a few inches and measure the non-sniped thickness of the board? I know on my old planer, I ALWAYS had to deal with snipe. I believe the DeWalt 735 typically has a bit, too...
I also have the wing extensions - and I still got a noticeable amount of snipe. I could minimize it by supporting the wood as it entered and exited the planer, but it was still there. I did a bit of testing on the measurement, and it seems more accurate more toward the middle of the piece - certainly past the 3" of potential snipe. I'm sure it will be better when I get used to the planer - but I am so impressed with the finish coming off the planer. I used the slow speed, and it is better than anything I got off of my old jointer/planer, a Robland XSD310 -a 220V MONSTER. I never liked the 1 speed planer part of it, but it IS cool to have a 12" jointer... The DeWalt is already showing itself to be light years ahead of the Robland, and the Wixey WR510 makes it now digitally accurate. I also have the Wixey attachment for my table saw - also very cool. Thanks again for the instructional video - it really helped!
Travis - I was thinking about adding the Byrd Shelix cutter head for the DeWalt 735 - well, maybe after I go through the 2 sets of knives it came with, anyway... have you gone with that head yet? If not, what knives do you use?
I haven't changed the knives yet. I still have the factory installed knifes. I don't use it a ton, so they're still good. When I do replace, I'll just use the standard Dewalt knives. I think they'll be fine for what I do with them.
Oh man, followed your directions and drilled holes too big. You didn't say there was a drill bit included, I was following right along and grabbed a drill bit the same size as the holes in the bracket, man, that little tidbit would have been nice!
